On top of the land-fill...
all covered with trash,
I spotted an eagle
midst the country's big stash.
He flew in a circle and tears filled his eye
He circled the landfill , then flew off in the sky.

Very nice gardens and butterfly house. I finally visited in early november. They had lots of African ballon milkweed. Saw about a dozen monarchs in the garden area near the water display. Also where the balloon milkweed was. Houston area also getting lots of December caterpillars.

I did mix my poppy seeds (purchased) with light sand to sprinkle those around. I had a spice shaker with purchased poppy seeds in it that I used...and I also spread the remaining spice poppy seeds, too. My larkspur and poppies went down on Tuesday of last week. We're getting a gentle rain today, although I've kept the soil moist after the seeding. I think they're on their own now with this rain. My tall verbena are still blooming beautifully. They self-seed so well and look good anywhere, so I just helped them a bit. My verbascum has seeds, but it's the Southern Charm variety, so I think that's a sterile one, right? By the way, my verbascum is now in bloom for the FIFTH time! It's shorter each time...started at 3 feet and is now blooming only 1 foot high. Still pretty, though. My 'Robert Poore' phlox is another self-seeder, so I have plenty of those seeds. It is also still blooming, although not as heavily. I have celosia 'Dark Caracas' (I think)....can I collect those seeds? I'd love to have thicker plantings of it.

Gesila...stop by if you have the chance you won't regret it! I was looking that the prices at Hallson's and these guys are about 1/2 the price! Even better! Coll_123...that he is! We are cleaning up areas in our yard that have never been touched (very large yard) and just about every area he was asking...would this be a good spot for a hosta garden? Love him!

Carrie, My hubby is Type 2 diabetic. Discovered it during a physical for a new job in 1998; blood sugar was over 400. His vision had been bad but he did not tell me. A few months before he had been on steroids for an ear infections..2 rounds and during that time lost 30 pounds without trying. He told his dr that he thought he had diabetes because he was in the bathroom peeing all night and drinking lots of water plus the weight loss. Dr. supposedly ran bloodwork and said he was fine. It was just 3 months after that bloodwork that they found he was indeed diabetic. I checked his file from the old dr. and his blood sugar was over 400 then...not sure why he lied or maybe he didn't even check his file. First drug they gave him brought it down quickly...cutting back on sugary soft drinks made a big difference until we discovered he could not use aspartame because it was causing him to have numerous vertigo attacks. He has Meniere's disease and aspartame can cause attacks. We realized after the fact that the dr. who gave him the steroids did not realize he had Meniere's nor did an ENT dr who ran an MRI to see if he had a tumor in his ear. He has lost all hearing in his right ear due to this disease. Thank God we found a dr. who knew right away he had Meniere's and explained what was happening. Unfortunately, his job was very stressful and his diabetes required more meds...this has happened several times and the dr just kept adding more meds. He walks a lot on his current job but it is very long hours and stressful which seems to be the cause of his high blood sugar. We have a new dr as of last month...see him next week for followup, we will see if he has a better approach. I suggested he might benefit from some classes on what foods he needs to be eating. He works a very long shift and meal time is very irregular so he takes things to munch on during the day...veggies, peanuts. He keeps doing the sandwich thing and I keep telling him he is shooting himself in the foot! He loves potatoes, rice, etc. It is a very hard row! His parents developed diabetes late in life...80's...he was in his 50's. Stevia is good...expensive. I need to grow it and learn how to use for him. I just pray I don't come up with it...If I do not have my chocolate occasionally, they will have to lock me up! Peggy

Maureen, I'm looking at three different birds there, right? I see two sub-adults, and one that looks mature. Interesting! The young birds take about 4 years to acquire the solid white head and tail and solid brown body, so you can figure the young bird that is mostly speckled is probably only a year or two old, and the one in the next to last picture is probably 3 to 4 years old and will soon finish molting into his adult plumage. Were there any other adults around? Landfills are good birding spots, especially for various gulls. Your pictures are fantastic, as always!

Marcia - actually there are four different birds in the pictures: two adults, a teenager and a toddler :)

I saw at least one other adult and two or three other sub-adults while I was there. I also saw an osprey, more gulls than I've ever seen, lots of vultures, crows and grackles there as well. Interesting place. Not particularly stinky either :) Definitely a place I'll go back to when I have more time.

Birds at a landfill remind me of the time I was told that our landfill was the "world's biggest bird nookery" It cracked me up. Obviously it was a large rookery and lots of bird nookie must have been going on. So now I can't think of the landfill without thinking of it as the bird nookery.

Maureen, I always enjoy your bird photos. I never imagined you could find eagles at the dump!

When I used to go camping in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate NY we would go to the dump to see the bears. Now I'm going to have to start looking more carefully when I go to the landfill here in St Pete.

Come to think of it, several years ago I did see a bald eagle fly across I-275 in the vicinity of the landfill.

Having lived just south of the Adirondack Park (Saratoga area) for many years, I've seen my share of bears there too. I've seen bears here a couple of times, but they're much smaller and not nearly as scary as the ones that roam the Adirondacks.

Aaaah, so that's TWO different adults, eh? Gotcha! I could tell the two subs apart, but not the two adults. I was wondering if there were more, and now I know. Great idea to take pictures there, Maureen! Thanks again for all you share with us.
