a strange occurance

Three years ago I sowed some seeds I received from another GW trader that were labeled Giant Lamb's Ear. I got one nice plant out of the sowing that turned out to be a lamb's ear plant very similar to the typical one except that it was about 2 1/2 ft across with LARGE leaves. Well, it died out at the end of that summer...I had assumed that our heat, humidity, and/or summer rains got the best of it. Well, this year after working the soil a little in that area, it reappeared in the same spot!!! It had never flowered so I know it wasn't a volunteer seedling. It is doing quite well as we are having a drier than usual summer....it is, again, 2 1/2 ft across. I guess some of the root survived all this time???? Anyone have anything like this happen before?

It's a tough plant...even tearing it out by the roots will not kill it. I dig it up and transplant a few small outer pieces every couple of years. If I leave any tiny pieces behind they will grow. I'm not surprised yours reappeared.
Evergreen in my garden and if I'm not careful, can become invasive.

I wish I could find out more about this plant. I googled "giant lamb's ear" and kept coming up with 'Helen von Stein'. However, I am sure it is not this variety....the leaves are even bigger than that. I should take a photo to post.

Thanks, everyone. It's good to know it's a Tsuga heterophylla. Those aren't too common as far as I know... Well, that is somewhat disappointing about the Calocedrus. Ah Andrew - sooty mold - don't have that problem in the desert! But I've heard it's a bear to get rid of - did you know I was from the Binghamtom area? Never knew mangos when I was your age though (big smile...) JF - so you have gotten the double down on the blooms, too - I didn't know - wonder if that perhaps means the future for some of our mango trees will be two sets of fruits per year - probably a larger crop followed by a smaller..... I wouldn't think it had anything to do with update.microsoft other than it ran file checking possibly with the monthly virus/error check - the Malicious Software Tool thing. Or something else triggered the error check, like an improper shut down on your computer and it automatically included all drives in the drive error check. If it continues to do it at every boot, then I'd be concerned - possibly the drive has reached the end of its life cycle and is getting ready to die... or it simply has a loose wire or poor plugged connection. Which happens with age and a bit of bumping.

One of my lambs ear just died within a few days of looking poor. Before it was big and healthy ... we have had a drought but I water that bed ...not necessarily the lambs ear everyday ...do they hardly like water at all ? I wonder if it will recover from the roots ?

crazy4hydrangea They like full sun, well-drained soil. As they are drought tolerant, you may well be over-watering. They don't like getting their leaves too wet either and this can cause them to rot.

Could it be Mullein? I have Common Mullein which is wooly, about 3 or more feet across and send a flower stalk up that can be 6 to 7 feet..yellow blooms. If one dies in the flowerbed it looks like a dead sheep, dead leaves are like paper.

Ya know, Peg, I think it just might be Mullein. I did sow a lot of seeds that year and there were several verbascums. I swear this one was labeled Giant Lamb's Ear but maybe that is just what that trader called it due to the resemblence. Maybe it will bloom for me so I can know for sure but, for now, I am going to assume that you are right. Thanks so much, I knew this forum was the place to ask!!! I'm still amazed that it came back from "the dead" like that after so long.

Helen Von Stein is the name of the variety you're looking for. It looks like regular Lambs Ear on steroids.
