I just love the mating season for my backyard birds! It's just getting underway in my yard _ the mocking birds woke me up at 7 this morning to let me know it was mating season.
They don't go all morning yet, and they're not chasing each other around the yard yet, but I'm so happy that time is coming.
I've also been seeing the cardinal pair flitting around, and the blue jays are doing their little clicking thing. I know they're basically a pain most of the year, but the little clicking, clucking thing they do this time of year is so cute.
And lately, when I walk the dogs in the morning, I've been seeing a red-headed woodpecker down the street pecking away at the street lamp, eager to attract some pretty little thing with his racket.
A couple years ago, I was sitting out on the deck talking to my brother in DC, and he asked me if I lived in a rain forest _ the noise from the mocking birds was so loud! And while they may just be mocking birds and blue jays and cardinals and woodpeckers, not endangered or anything, I'm happy to have them making their music in my yard. We only use organic fertilizer and pest control, and very little of either, and we try to plant natives, so I'm hoping my little yard is a safe place for these pretty common and boisterous beauties.
Honestly, I can't wait for the mocking bird season to get into full swing, when they are fighting over mates, chasing each other around the yard, completely oblivious to us. We get strafed occasionally, which I just love!
Haven't seen the sweet little orioles (spot-breasted I think) yet this year, but they've been by three years in a row, so I'm hopeful.
I also saw my first zebra longwing a couple weeks ago (recognized it from a post here). I'm blaming his recent debut in my garden on my decision not to use pesticides.
It's a great time to play in the yard in Florida. Anyone else seeing and hearing and enjoying the sounds of the season?
