The End of June Cottage Garden - lots of pics

My cottage garden is my ever changing garden. Every year I plant different annuals, add a new perennial or two and wind up making the bed a little larger. It's closely planted together, so there's always a changing display of what's in bloom.

You have bouquets right there in your yard! Beautiful! It's fun seeing flowers blooming for others that haven't bloomed yet here. I planted a black and blue salvia for the first time, and am excited to see it bloom. I had some regular and some white rose campions that only lasted a couple seasons. I must have had them seed in the compost, because what I thought was little lambs ears all over the place in my garden turned out to be what I'm pretty sure is the campion. I moved them here and there, and hope they live and bloom. It will be interesting to see what color they are.

Beautiful pictures and outdoor space. I wanted to make a recommendation for working with a concrete slab patio. Sorry if you already know this technique. I have an old house and my laundry room floor is concrete. I cleaned the floor, etched it with the correct chemicals, painted it a solid burgundy. I took a clean pizza box, cut it apart, and cut a piece of foam to fit into the bottom of the box. Glue to foam to the top of the pizza box. Pour some paint into the bottom of the box (a contrasting color). Pour a couple of other colors side by side in the middle of the contrasting color. Take a stick and draw it through the colors, making a pattern through the paint. Dip the foam into the patterned paint and start stamping. I left space between the stamps so that the burgundy showed through as if it were grout. Now I know it's not granite and I usually only like "real" things, but it really warmed up the room. I know that some people in the "garden junk" forum have used the same type of technique to make brick patterns on concrete patios.

I am so envious! Beautiful yard, beautiful house and beautiful dogs. Lovely beyond words. I tell you what. All of you with your picture perfect gardens puts mine to shame. I am not posting anymore pictures of my simple gardens! I had a Dalmatian/Great Dane named Benny. I told people he was a "Damnation". He scared everyone who came to our house, especially the meter readers. He was beautiful and so playful, like a Dane, but had the not-so-friendly-strangers-personality like Dalmatians. A great guard dog for me. Poor Benny died of kidney failure at age 5. I believe it was the result of being bit by a gigantic copperhead. He developed complications afterward and the kidneys failed. He loved to go for rides in the truck, sitting up tall in the cab and looking out. He HAD to go for a ride every day. What a character. I took him for his final ride, having to lift him up into the cab and by the time we got home, he could not walk. He was miserable and suffering. The next day, I took him to the vet. My poor Benny. I love your Great Dane. He has just a beautiful coat coloration. I love how they are big, playful pups. A great breed of dog. Thanks for sharing all. ~Annie

Funny thing is we had rain one night last week. That is VERY unusual for us. Rainy season is Nov-May with most of it in Jan/Feb. The warm humid weather is also untypical. Thanks Daniel. I rototill (tree roots) so I pull it all up each year. Otherwise I like the idea! Two koi ponds are already in place. One can be seen in the background of the first photo. It's about 1000 gallons. Built it myself last summer. So far working great. The other pond is around 400 gallons and sits under the funny sun shade on the second photo. Happy fish in each. :) But I do need the fence painted...house too! Brian, notice I stole your idea of using threaded rods on the container? I'll be clamping a cage to the top, but will wait till I transport it to SB first. I do spend too much time walking around and checking stuff out. Didn't even post the orange "orchard," raspberry hill, avacado trees, transplanted fig, grapes, and more...now that I think of it there must be something I should be out doing. Where's my flashlight! #@%^$^&

Thank you both very much for the compliment. Lilyfinch I don't remember when I planted most of my roses. I have 23 antique roses and some knockouts, but the oldest I have is Mrs BR Cant which I planted 8 years ago in the spring, I can't remember if Lamarque and Climbing Pinkie were planted the same year or the next. Once I planted my first 2-3 roses I was addicted and bought usually 3-4 roses every year, I haven't planted any new ones in the past 3 years as I just don't have the time to spend in my garden like I did. I have found my climate here (can't speak for anywhere else as this is the only place I have ever gardened before, but Noisettes (which originated here in Charleston), regular tea roses, China roses and hybrid musk roses tend to thrive quite well and can get quite large fairly quickly for some. Peggy Martin (I did a post on the antique rose forum about this fantastic rose) is a found rose so I don't know what background she has but she seriously thrives on neglect and I do very very little to her. She is believe it or not the youngest rose I have! I have a lot of heavy clay soil so working with it is back breaking and slow which is why I haven't added anymore roses as of recently. I have some roses that grow quicker than others and in my garden here are some of my slow growers; Madame Alfred Carrier is one that is always touch and go, Mrs Dudley Cross, Maggie (I threaten to dig her up every year but she is looking for promising this year so we shall see), Cornelia (another touch and go rose that I have threatened to shovel prune but keep giving her a chance and she too looks better this spring)...While Lamarque, The Charlestonian, Peggy Martin, Belinda (not to be confused with Belinda's Dream), Duchesse de Brabant are among the fastest growing then there's Mrs BR Cant who hardly did a thing the first three years and then took off into one monster of a rose. The rest seem to grow at a fairly normal rate. I had to laugh a bit at your saying hoping to stay long enough, I have wanted to move to a bigger home for awhile but my garden keeps me from doing so, I just can't leave her and anytime I tell someone we were thinking of moving they would gasp and say you can't leave your garden what about all the hard work you have done. My daughter laughes at me because in the winter I'm all about moving, that is till spring comes and I'm like I can never leave. Haha I think she right! But I would say in general it will take about 4 years to have them really start filling out again though it just all depends really in end on a particular rose. ;) So I didn't intend for this to be so long lol, but I hope that helps you some. What a happy jumble of bright colorful plants! Really lovely. I like the lychnis and heliotrope combo. My lychnis tends to live for around 3-4 years rather than just be a biennial. Still it self seeds so I always have more. Beautiful larkspur!

How nice to have such a treat to go with my morning coffee! I love seeing both the close up and the long shots of the gardens. It gives a good perspective of things.

There is nothing better than blue with gold and the contrast of the flat discs of yarrow with the spikes of the salvias is just perfect.

I think it's wonderful that you give us closeups complete with names of the beautiful plants and then also back up to take a few pictures of the entire grouping so we can see how it all fits together.

I really enjoyed the tour through your gardens. I love that you show such complete views as it helps me to visualize how different plants really look together. Yours is done beautifully. I love the yellow achillea and blue salvia together and I would really like to know where you got the Jupiter's Beard...can that be winter sown? I had to check what zone you are in because my cleomes haven't even budded up yet. Your garden is lovely and I hope you share more pictures.

I've never seen snapdragon rocket in orchid. I'll have to look for seeds.

I don't know how I missed this. I always love your combinations, A2zmom. And I love seeing the big picture. That always helps as I'm trying to add plants I see to my own garden. I was so excited to have some plumbago that came back from last year. I have some May Night salvia but it sure doesn't look anything like yours. I think I deadheaded when I shouldn't have. Do you ever deadhead it?
