Coleus for the last ten years
Comments (18)Mskhanson, I've found that the bigger the planter, the bigger the coleus gets. When planted in the ground, they really get big and full. Imho, in your zone, I wouldn't plant any in full sun, and would avoid afternoon sun. You said your planter is 6"x24". How deep is your planter? They can get good size root systems if given the room. If it's 6" wide, well, that's not very wide for these plants. Myself, I'd probably plant only 2 of them in there. They do get bushy. I have planted coleus in the ground that have gotten only 2 or 3 hrs of dappled morning sun and the rest of the time shade. They grew, but they didn't get as big as ones planted in the ground that got at least 4 or more hrs of sun. Btw, I've had both kinds you mentioned and I was pleased with them. Just remember to not let them dry out. They'll wilt bad. Sometimes mine will wilt during hot, sunny days, but when the shade comes, they'll perk back up. Just because they wilt, doesn't mean they need water. They're conserving water by wilting. Other plants will do that also. You can stick your finger in the soil to see if they need water or not. Good luck and enjoy! Kat...See MoreLet's compare coleus, my pics & yours

Comments (8)I grow my coleus in pots. In late September, I move them into the greenhouse. By mid-winter, they usually die back, but the seeds drop into the pots and I have 'babies" come up in late March or April, depending up the amount of sun they get and when I start watering everything again to bring them out of dormancy. Just thought I ought to "splain" that better. Same thing happens with my Basils, Petunias and Periwinkles, too. Oh, and the Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya)- it comes back every year. I had two come up in one of my potted cactus this year and one came up in the Butterfly Ginger pot. I love these plants. The leaves are so colorful!...See MoreMy Favorite Coleus
Comments (19)AmberSky, yes! Rosy Dawn is just a KILLER site! I simply have to place one more order in the next day or so...otherwise, I would NOT be able to last until they re-open for business! Ginny, Sedona was a very disappointing looking little plant when it arrived, with leaves that looked a dirty olive greenish color. I didn't have much hope for it, though I had seen it used in beds in magazines for a couple of years, and had been attracted to it. So I potted it up and waited, and slowly the color began to emerge. It is truly amazing...looks exactly the colors of maple trees in the fall. As I said before, "lit from within" with a fiery orange glow. I just love it! Tannatonk, coleus scoff at heat, in my experience. They often wilt in the middle of the day, but usually perk back up by late afternoon. (Only in summer) In containers, you will need to hand water them daily, for sure. In the ground, it depends on your soil and how much sun they are getting. I don't think it hurts any of them, even the ones that love sun, to get some relief from it in the afternoon. And some of them will perform just great in shade, as long as the light is bright. I have noticed that I prefer the colors on some in one light over another. By that I mean, even if it is listed as a coleus that loves sun, I might like a particular one better in some shade, based on what color it turns in the sun. It can really change the look of a coleus completely. For instance, in the shade Defiance is lime green and red. In the sun, it is more gold and orange. It still looks full and happy, but the color is very different. My idea is to have it growing both places, and it will be like two plants in one, right? I'm trying hard to finish weeding and prepping beds before it gets any hotter, but it's already so hot in my backyard that I can barely stand it. The front is much shadier and about ten degrees cooler. But I'm not ready to do much out there, yet, so I'm working on finishing off out back. Marcia...See Morewinsomegardener
