Saturday's Sizzling Hot Beauties

Please excuse the bad foliage and the excess weeds. I'm blaming the cicadas and the extreme heat for both. There are several beds I never got weeded because of heat, work demands, and cicada attacks. Luckily, there are only a few cicadas left, although one did fly straight into my forehead this morning. I'm glad I don't have to deal with them for another 13 years.

ZEPHYR'S SONG - This is one big fluffy girl. Registered at 7 inches, the first flowers on this cultivar are always closer to 8.

ZEPHYR'S SONG clump - The "tiny" daylilies next to ZS are Born to Run. They look so little next to the Zeph.

ROBES FOR THE QUEEN

CRAZY IVAN was going crazy with blooms today!

MISTER BUBBLES had an ffo times five this morning. After last year's sulking over being divided and moved, MISTER B is back to his amazingly budded and branched ways again.

My goodness Debra, tose are all beautiful. ZS is struttung and mine are just struggling along. My Crazy Ivan had it's first bloom this morning...LOL!! Do you talk to those babies? If you do, you must make some promises to them. Love Mr Bubbles. This is my first time to see him! Ellie

I think my favorite is MOONLIGHT SAIL, but Robes for he Queen is right in there too. Crazy Ivan seems to have been doing really well for you, I like that coloring too. Columbus does look very hopeful, hope he didn't have to go without. "Please, miss, may I have some more?"

Sheila - Thanks for the comments. I'd love to be out in the garden all day, but it's just too hot. I think the daylilies would like to come inside on scorchers like this. Avedon, Celeste and Kay - Duck's Dark Side does have a very commanding presence. Jean and Rita - Although I had two good blooms on the WOIA clump today, three others never opened up. Lined in Lavender is a Luddy Lambertson intro. We went to the Mecca last month and spent a great afternoon with him and his wife, Rachel. He knew all his plants and parentages by name without tags and had a clear vision for his crosses. We were also impressed that he intentionally brings in northern plants, which grow poorly for him, just to keep his genetics balanced and so his plants will grow north or south. Yes, Nancy, I bought one [which is one more than I need]. I also went cheap, Highland Pinched Fingers. Not my usual preferred color but it was so bright and cheery it kept calling out to me. This place is a private residence that has open house every year. Next week I may go to Lancaster [30 minutes away from Wilmore]. I keep saying I'm going to Rice's & Antioch, both close to each other but 1 hour from here, but like you always talk myself out of it due to the heat, and I really don't like driving very much, though I do enough of it.

ZEPHYR'S SONG is one I have to go look up. Your pic of the clump with BTR next to it shows just how gorgeous it is. It reminds me of PEARL HARBOR.

Great pics. No favorites as they are all really nice.

Columbus looks so pretty. There really are lots of beautiful blooms here but honestly, have to go with pure size! ZEPHYR'S SONG just looks amazing next to the clump of regular sized daylilies.

Did Columbus get a second breakfast? How can you resist that face? Really love that eye on Extra Terrestrial so it may be my favorite, but they all look so good.

There are quite a few in this batch that caught my attention: MOONLIGHT SAIL, ORCHID ELEGANCE, MISTER BUBBLES and ZEPHYR'S SONG. Each one is lovely in a different way.

What bad foliage and weeds I think everything looks great, I have the bad foliage and weeds. Great photo of Columbus he's such a pretty kitty.

Linda - The browned tips and splits in the foliage are there, as are the weeds. I just try to do creative cropping to camouflage them.

Columbus steals the show. and I do hope it got some thing:) such a pretty kitty.well, the cat is my favorite, but next on the list would be ZEPHYR'S SONG.That one is gorgeous

What a great shot of Columbus! Hard to pick a favorite daylily out of so many beauties...but I think I'll go with ROBES FOR THE QUEEN. I feel drawn to everything toothy this year...uh-oh.

Cindy - I would love to take a photo of the blue and white bed. But it's mostly white this year, with nine plants in all. I set seed on all the blues last year and wore them out. Asian Fairy Bluebird has two wimpy scapes with hardly any buds, and Certulean Warbler is refusing to scape at all this year. Jitterbug Blues has only one scape (albeit wonderfully budded and branched) out of six fans. Orchid Elegance is the only blue with multiple scapes and more than a few buds. Everything in that bed was previous grown in pots in part shade. Planting was done in the fall, which is not optimum in my climate. Next year that garden should be fabulous, but this year not so much. I probably can manage some photos of some of the blue and white blooms together. I would love to see a photo of your black and white bed.

Mantis - Crazy Ivan grows like gangbusters here, and I know it does well in Kentucky. I don't know how it performs in Ohio.

Hi Debra, I have been admiring your pictures of Moonlight Sail while waiting patiently for mine to bloom. It finally did this morning. I went out early to rescue the bloom from the rain and it sat in a juice glass while my wife and I had breakfast. It was a lovely bloom.

Edward - I really do love Moonlight Sail. I'm glad yours is blooming now. This is the first year I've had it that Moonlight Sail has not rebloomed. The area where it is planted has become too shady because of a neighbor's tree.

These are all really beautiful! I had to go look up Zephyr's Song, because so many I get excited about are dormant. What luck! It is EV, so will have to add that to my want list, along with Robes for the Queen, Moonlight Sail, Lacy Sampler and Mister Bubbles.
