Coast Redwood variability

I have planted 2 batches of redwoods from seed, and out of a dozen seedlings, I can see a lot of variability. One grows very slow (only 8 cm tall after 2 summers, with the trunk the size of a large sewing needle, and a canopy 3 cm in diameter), one is very bushy (all the others have a clearly defined leader), some have 3 cotyledons, all have different shades of blue-green-rust, etc.

Are Coast Redwood seedlings that variable?

I read in the New York Times that there is a project to collect cuttings from tallest or oldest Coast redwoods to preserve living archives in case of disaster (climate change, disease, etc.)

I am thinking that having archives of 100 samples would limit the genetic diversity. A way to preserve diversity would be a seed bank, which probably already exists.

Here is a link that might be useful: NYT article
