Do conifers prepare for snow/winter?

A relative lives in Central Pennsylvania which was hit by early snowstorms recently. The deciduous trees there still have their leaves on and many have lost huge branches due to the great weight on them.

Many conifers have also broken. Since they normally are fine during snowy winters, we wonder if the conifers undergo some physiological changes in preparation for heavy snow loads. Or was this just extra heavy, extra sticky snow that would have broken conifers even if it fell in January?

I found it interesting that she would wonder about this while half the town was without power. She had offered her floor space (still with electric and heat) to several friends who needed a warm place to stay.
