9' tall screen for summer sun, full winter shade in tub
Comments (2)Well you just said no bamboo but I have multiple 7' x 2' stock tanks planted with (originally) one #15 Phyllostachys aurea (golden bamboo). They are huge, lush and I've had no trouble with them. I use drip irrigation which admittedly I leave on for about 45 minutes. We use them as plantings around our metal barns, which really needed softening, but are surrounded with concrete and gravel so I had to do tubs. I think the key to growing them in pots is to use a big enough pot. I also suspect that after another 3-4 years (they've been in for 3) I will have to have them pulled out, cut up and replanted. All of that may be WAY more than you want to do, I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to do and would make the right kind of screen....See MoreDo all yellow conifers need full sun to stay yellow?
Comments (4)i dont know about the angry part .. lol ... with most plants.. full sun is 8 hours or more ... counting dusk and dawn as less intense ... so i would suggest that its not necessarily ... a requisite 18 hours of direct sun ... its just enough sun to color properly.. frankly.. do it and find out.. the thing isnt going to grow so fast.. that after a year or two.. you couldnt move it.. plus its an arb ... frankly.. not one of the foo foo plants ... also.. just dont tuck it in to close to the foundation ... one must count ambient light in the formula ... as long as its not in dark shadow.. it will get light the hours its not in shade ... ken...See MoreFull sun in summer, full shade in winter - suggestions?
Comments (0)I have a pretty large bed that wraps around the north side of my house which gets zero sun in the winter and a full day of baking sun in the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions for plants that will thrive in this environment? So far I have tried salvias (too shady), hostas (too sunny), astilbe (probably too sunny), ipomoea (too shady). I have a japanese maple that is hanging in there, a hydrangea that is hopefully hanging in there and a couple of abutilon that seem happy. So far, hellebores seem to love this site, but I need some ground cover to plant with them. Thanks!...See MorePlants for full sun in summer & full shade in spring/fall/winter
Comments (3)I live in Northern IL - Kane County. we have over an AC and the lot is split between full sun and full shade. Due to water issues in the area, we have to choose plants that are drought torrent to survive in our yard! Balloon Flowers have done very well in both shade and full sun. At fist, I wasn't that happy with them as the flowers don't last for a long time, nor do the spread quickly. The GOOD NEWS is this yr. they did very, very well with our sever drought conditions............. I have several that seeded down and were in a location I didn't want them so I really didn't water them and they survived!!! Black -eyed Susan same as above! However, they will wilt down if they don't receive some form of water occasionally. The good news is once you see them start to wilt, give them a little water and they will come roaring back! They will also seed down for you! Another favorate is Purple Cone Flowers, and they come in White, Yellow, RED, and Pink. They have a very nice decorative flower head. And if you deadhead them, they will continue to flower all summer with Little to no maintenance. Just added the Red one's this yr and I love them!!!!! A few other to consider are; Jacob's Ladder, Lavender,Speedwell, Yarrow (long lasting but get tall and gangly, but the bee's and butterfly love it) Best of wishes with your garden! - AL...See Moresc77 (6b MA)
