Congratulations, grandma!! If you dig it out carefully, and remove lots of dirt with it, you should be able to safely move it now. There's still a fair bit of growing season left. Make sure you water it well the day befoe the move, and then water faithfully until it's settled in its new home. You grow, girl!!

Marcia are you sure it is a new plant or is it just a side shoot off the mother plant. In either case, I would wait until spring. I'm not particular about transplanting shrubs later in the year unless they have been growing in a pot. I've had more failure than success moving them later in the season. Although, I don't live in the tropics like you do. LOL

Congrats Marcia, but I'm curious to know too. Is it a "sucker" from the mother plant, or an entirely new plant that came up from seed? Or maybe you won't know until you start digging.

Either way, it's a neat event, but if it's from seed who knows what you'll end up with? Maybe 'Mr Sunset'?

A few years ago, I dug away a sucker from my Therese Bugnet rose (quite common with that rose) and transplanted it. Despite having a bit of root when I transplanted it, it really took a few years before the plant started growing good. Hopefully yours works better.

I'm not entirely sure right now where i'd even put the baby so it may not get moved until the spring anyway. I will move it, though, whatever it is (baby or sucker) - there's bound to be a spot just waiting for a rose!

Well, i dug around but didn't find much. If it was a sucker, it would somehow be attached to the mother plant, but i couldn't find anything. Of course, the ground is hard and dry and i was just scrabbling with my fingers. There was stem about an inch down and i didn't encounter any roots, so maybe a sucker?

Who's gonna throw the baby shower? What would make a suitable gift in this case? A big bag of cow manure?

Sorry, all the tin cans go to the recycling but the fish skin...If I mail it do you think your mailman would deliver the package? It probably would take about a week to get from Brandon to your place. Although, I am sure that he might be slightly wondering what on earth you ordered now. :)

She would be shaking her head for sure. When i pick up dh's parcels from Princess Auto, she always says "That's worth a few more plants for you, eh?" Rotten fish skin might throw her off a bit, though!

I will bring a box of Miracle Gro for Roses (it's pink, for girls). And wear my best Sunday dress. I hope somebody makes little sandwiches with no crusts.

Really tho, Marcia that's exciting! A sucker could originate further down than an inch. I'm guessing that might be what you have. So if it's own-root... yay!

Gillian, speaking of sandwiches...I had the most interesting sandwich at a potluck picnic that I was at last Thursday.

They put cream cheese on one side, butter on the other. In the middle were cucumber slices, cranraisens and pecans. A really odd combination, colorful and soooo good.

Brenda, darn those sound like good sandwiches! You can definitely whip up a few of those for the shower. In England they are way more sandwich creative than us. Cuke and cream cheese... mmm. The best one I ever had was chicken salad with halved grapes in... wow it was amazing. You have to cut them in half or they shoot out when you bite them ;0)

My daughter likes cucumber sandwiches but i wonder if she ever tried them with cream cheese. Have to ask her. It sounds good. What to do with your excess cucumbers! LOL

Marcia I am sure it was a seedling..I was prepared to cut back where it had suckered but I only got fine roots that would have filled a 6 or 8 inch pot at the most..I gave it to a friend and it has grown wonderfully this summer for her...savona

Maybe if we ever get some rains to soften things up a bit, i'll be able to dig around easier and see what it is. As it is now, i'd be afraid of hurting the poor little thing if i started digging!
