This was taken early morning, somewhat shaded.

This was taken later, with the sun above me.

Better color on JRG than the one in an earlier post.

Beautiful Lrae! I like Hint of Blue - but no surprise there, as I love the pinks and purples! Ok, and the watermarks, and blue eyes... :o) Isn't it funny how the color changes throughout the day? Sometimes it is like looking at a whole different flower... and I usually can't figure out which I like more! :o)

Bless your heart Tammy. Maybe a four pack of your sweet hellebores too. I got a four pack from you the first swap I went to. I planted them in a kind of dry, sandy garden and forgot about them. Every once in a while I would look at all those little plants with two little cast iron leaves and think humm what the heck are those and then laugh when I remembered where they came from. Can't tell you how pleased I was last week when I looked one morning and bright, new green leaves were coming from each of them. Took them two years. I'm in southern New England and my hellebores bloom late February-early March. Altho' I'm not anywhere near North Carolina, I thought if I let you know when they bloom for me here in the frozen north, you could gauge when they'd bloom for you.

Hi Loveplants2! I I found you on one of Al's amazing threads... I currently have a fiddle leaf I am losing to what I believe is Oedema. I foolishly thought if I potted up with his original soil and then a little bit sunshine potting mix I'd be good to go. But I should have known by how dense the mix was and how much it retained water with my herbs that this would be the beginning of the death of my beautiful fig. I am am thinking the best course of option for my fiddle at this point would be to give him a good flushing, check to see how much root rot there might be, and then to put him back in his pot with PROPER soil that he can enjoy for the next couple years, and fertilize too. i saw you have used the 5-1-1 and gritty mix for awhile... I'm wondering if you sell batches at all or anything like that? I want to make my own mix but I'm honestly terrible when it comes to percentages and the sifting part of things... If you don't sell it, would you happen to be able to walk me through exactly what you use to make your mix (I'm thinking 5-1-1 for my fiddle?) sifting tools and all, because Al is busy and I'd love to be able to do this as soon as possible (Friday am preferably) before I go out of town for the week, and because I know we are passing the ideal time for repotting... Sorry to to hijack this post, I just desperately need to get help from someone ASAP... I hate that more ugly brown spots are spreading to my beloved Sid :(

Ballerina is blooming today in NC Florida

I've never grown Ballerina in alkaline soil, but I have had an odd experience with it in terms of grafted and own root. Back in my garden design days, I would order own root Ballerinas from Heirloom. They were all very healthy. Later, I bought two grafted ones (Dr. Huey) from two different nurseries at two different times. Neither has been as healthy as the own roots. They 've been moved a couple of times (full sun to partial shade) but still presented some blackspot. Nothing major but noticeably different than the Heirloom own roots planted in a number of different gardens in a variety of conditions. Interesting, yes? My experience with Belinda matches the data above. She grows a bit larger and sprawls a bit more, but she handles pruning well, so she can be as tidy as you like. She can also be trained as a modest fluffy climber, as can Ballerina. Belinda's color is quite bright and then fades in that antique photograph sort of way. Ballerina's color in full sun in hot climates will fade a little too quickly for my taste. I love it in partial shade. Both take partial shade very well, but I've found Ballerina takes more shade in stride. Carol

Hint of Blue is gorgeous, color really does it for me. I recently received Frankie's Fantasy, sure hope mine blooms as pretty at that!

OK, Lrae -- here are my favs: Hint of Blue (gorgeous) and Glazed Heather Plum (very pretty). Is Frankie's Fantasy as large a bloom as Humdinger? I like that pic with both of them. Have you been able to get Humdinger to set seed pods?

Frankie's Fantasy isn't quite as big as Humdinger. Humdinger has wider petals and sepals and it doesn't curve as much as FF.
