Giant Sequioa just started growing again...

The tree, potted along with another just turned a darker green and started looking/growing like it did in May. These trees haven't done much of anything since early August and I figured they were preparing to go dormant for the upcomming winter. They were bought from a grower high in the Serrias where a big freeze should have already occured.

We haven't had a freeze here yet but the question is: if it does freeze will the trees be damaged since they are not dormant?

Also, have a Coastal Redwood that's still growing and it was bought from a grower near it's native range. Will it be damaged during a freeze?

Should I put both in the garage?

I've never seen any significant autumn frost damage on either; you might get a little dieback on the tips, but both recover well from such damage and don't suffer any long-term harm.

A little clarification of terms may be needed here......a "freeze" implies an extended period of below freezing temperatures, something that is uncommon in our climate in all but the most severe winters. If you are referring to a frost, or the occasional nighttime lows below 32F, there is little need to worry. The end of October is a bit premature for most hardy conifers here to enter dormancy and with our overly dry and rather hot summer, I'm not at all surprised your trees have responded to cooler (and wetter) fall weather by pushing new growth. It's very common and somewhat expected on trees not accustomed to dry, hot summers.

FWIW, my nursery receives stock from up and down the west coast and all conifers remain outside, exposed to all the elements, throughout the winter without damage. My own containerized plants do the same, although I do make sure containers are well watered if extended cold is expected. There is no need to move these to your garage.

Hi Dee! Yep, at it again...these little suckers are growing fast! Unfortunately, I never did get any pics of the MGs...sorry :( I've got 5 (I think) plants in the pot right now, 4 are up and they are about 6" tall, heading for the ceiling fast. I'll take your advice and get a couple of them outta there. I did like the MGs last year...blooms were sparse on the smallish variety I used (Red picotee, which turned out to be more ppl than red), and I think I didn't neglect them enough...probably will do a slightly bigger pot this year with those, and just leave 'em alone. For some reason, I tend to 'baby' my office plants, even though I KNOW MGs don't like it. Will try to keep you posted on progress!

I agree with everything said previously. I would add if at all possible learn how to home-process and store your home grown food for food security and to make the savings last into the gardening off-season. Look at the news about Japan - see the videos of the empty store shelves. Even a first-rate nation can have an emergency that disrupts the food supply. It is about mass panic and hoarding as much as it is about actual shortages. You do not think an emergency of that nature can happen somewhere in the U.S.? My one word reply: Katrina. Last note: When I walk in the grocery aisles at the mega supermarkets all I smell is chemicals. Rows and rows of beautiful, colorful, uniform, blemish free, expensive, chemically laden, insipid, tasteless junk I would not even feed to pigs. I suppose I should not sugar-coat my opinions, huh? ;-) -Tom

As for how long it should take to dry out between waterings, it really depends on your individual conditions - your home, the medium, etc. This time of year I usually water my Hoyas around once a week, the thirstier ones twice a week. You need to find your own pace, though. As Mike suggested, get a feel for the weight of your pot when it is wet/dry. If you pick it up whenever you water you will gradually become skilled at making this call. In the meantime, stick your finger down a couple inches into the soil and water when it feels dry. Or do as Josh suggests and stick a wooden chopstick or kabob spear in there, like you were checking a cake to see if it was done. You don't want to keep it wet all the time; what you're really aiming for is that you don't leave it sitting bone dry. It is true that MG soil is not a good choice for Hoyas, which prefer a medium with better aeration. You have to imagine that in the wild most of them are epiphytic, growing out of the Ys of trees or on fallen logs, so their roots like to breathe, not be under a heavy compact blanket of soil. So it's a good idea to cut peat-based soil, like MG, with orchid mix and perlite, for example. There is no universal SUPREME HOYA MIX, and everyone has their own strategy, but the idea is to concoct something that provides fast drainage and airiness.

Spicy Jatropha slow to start growing again

We have a Spicy Jatropha about 2 years old. It's about 6 feet tall, growing in front of a south-facing fence where it gets full sun (late morning until evening). Back in March, it had some new growth at the top of all the stems. Then, we had a late cold spell one night and temps dipped into the low thirties, nipping the new growth. Now I don't see any new growth --- or maybe it's just afraid to come out, LOL. The only sign of life is one leaf on a lower branch. I haven't scratched any branches yet to check for green... I'm remaining hopeful that tomorrow, tomorrow it will start growing again. We have another one still in the 1-gal black nursery pot I purchased earlier this year. It's only a foot high, and has lots of top growth and blooms. It's in a different spot in the yard but I don't think it gets any more sun than the other one. What's up with our Jatropha?

I have a sequoiadendron giganteum that I grew from seed that is growing in my front yard here in the warm end of zone five poughkeepsie. The thing grows non-stop up to frost and even a little bit after frosts have become a daily experience. The darn thing is essentially decidous here, leaving only wood twigs with a bunch of brown "hairs" and a little bit of green, but by april it is all green once again, and takes off in May. It nets a bit over a foot each year. It is heading into its third year, so it is not tried and tested for too long, but it has survived continous -10 degrees fahrenheit and a few periods where the temperature went below that. I wouldn't worry about frost harming it to say the least. Although, out of two hundred seedlings it is the only one to survive, but this is not zone 8.

Yes, last summer was a record setter for drought but I watered all my potted trees on a daily basis from June till Late Sept. The landscape trees get watered every 2-3 days during the same period.

klavier, I agree G sequioas grow like crazy. Have one potted, started out last spring w/ a 11/16" diameter trunk and it's now nearly 1.5"!! Upward growth was less than 1'.
