New Place to buy Naners, Citrus in Palm City, Fl

And various citrus trees, fresh produce, real manure, sand and tailored banana fertilizer and nutrient mixes. John Mackenzie of Sunshine farms has relocated to Palm City, Fl. He's set up a produce stand on the Martin highway within Edward Miller nursery.

I saw Big, I mean BIG banana plants in 10 , 15 and 30 gallon pots. He has Gran Nain and Cavendish right now and expects to finish moving the entire farm this year.

Thanks Dan I saw that place last week and wondered. Didn't have time to stop though. It's out of my way, but it's just down the street from my favorite nursery...Pinders.

I moved to Palm City last summer and I'm amazed at how many nurseries there are here. For visitors, just get off at Exit 110 on I-95 (Martin Hwy) and head east. One of my favorites is Botanics Wholesale, the owner, Jack Miller, is a wealth of information. He grows rare palms, including some natives that are hard to find. Another favorite is Gone Native, which raises only trees and plants native to Martin County. You could spend an entire Saturday visiting the dozens of nurseries in Palm City.

Inulover, Welcome to Inverness:) Hope you love the town as much as I do. As Tom said we do get nippy and some winters see lows in the upper 20's. I have 11 or so citrus trees and have had some damage to them some years but they still thrive. None of my trees are planted close to a building but we do have the lakes to our north which modifies the cold north wind to some degree. I hate those salad type trees for a couple reasons. 1. They just don't seem as robust as normal trees. 2. it always seems one of the grafted types is more robust and over time it takes over the tree and shades out those different limbs/varieties that grow slower. Give up on the dwarf idea, just buy the couple trees you like and if you must prune them to keep them smaller. Citrus are after all shrubs not trees and do not need pruned for shape you can prune them and they take to it well. Far as I am concerned if I could only have two trees it would be a tangerine and a lemon. The only problem is while the tangerine is very cold hardy the lemon is a wimp and is very susceptible to cold damage. If you do plant a lemon I would put misters in the tree and run them on those couple cold nights we get a year. The tangerines are just so darn good and so easy to peel and the tree is very prolific. The lemon (improved Meyer) is great as it gives you multiple harvests of lemons. My lemon has fruit on it now about 1/3 grown and is blooming again so it really extends the harvest. I would steer clear of limes as they are too easily killed by the cold. Far as sources I bought my trees from Floyd's citrus down in Dade City. It was a bit of a drive but he has dozens of varieties in many sizes and unlimited knowledge and as a bonus his trees are a 1/3 the cost of the local big box store trees.

Cactus dude, its all good. If you're not familiar with mid Atlantic and Northeast Beach culture, its radically different than going to a beach in California. California is more about day tripping to the beach. It's a year round beach climate and people go there to surf or picnic or watch the sunset. Here, our beach season is short. Businesses have three precious months to make money for the entire year. Rent is VERY expensive. Anything that sets you apart from your competitor or makes your place look more "beachy" will help make the season. Tourists generally don't do day trips either, as most of the east coast cities are a few hours drive from their favorite beach resorts. So visits are often in increments of every weekend, entire week's vacation or entire seasons renting a house (often year after year or generations). Repeat loyal customers are big business. The thousands spent on "disposable" palms can translate to hundreds of thousands for the beach club, bar, mini golf or restaurant. Same for the garden center that sold the palms and installed them. Growers too.

There is a DIFFERENCE between advertising and giving something away to a person, and saying you will set it out to the curb for them to pick up, and the curbside 'dumpster divers' the roam the neighborhoods looking for treasures. The CL people have the owner's permission to take the stuff. With Craigslist permission is being given for arranged or open pickup. Big difference. One of the things CL has done is made givaways easy. Just advertise. Set a time for the item to be picked up with the person who is to receive it. Set it out to the curb. No need to meet them. What a lot of people who curbside shop DO NOT REALIZE is that sometimes the items that they see are set out for a specific person to come and get them. A friend. A Craiglst respondent. A charity drive. I've had this happen to me. I set out items ON MY PORCH and ON MY PERSONAL SIDEWALK going up to the porch - NOT the city sidewalk. A charity had an appointment to pick them up at a certain time. I caught a bunch of scruffy looking guys loading the stuff into their beat up pickup truck and I went and yelled at them. Remember, this stuff was IN MY YARD on MY sidewalk. The guy tells me that "The person who lives there gave them permission to take everything away." You should have seen the look on their faces when I informed them that they were talking to the person who lived there, and it was ME. While I yelled that they were stealing from the charity who had an appointment to pick the stuff up, they jumped in their truck and sped away. I think they were illegals and did not want any 'trouble'. I hate it when I put out stuff for charities to pick up and find that someone stole it all, or picked out all the good stuff for themselves. It happens all the time. I've caught neighbors red handed doing this. Bags ripped open in the middle of the night with clothing strewn around. Pottery smashed on the sidewalk. Electronics now soaked with rain. And then when the huge truck from the charity arrives there is hardly enough stuff left to have made the trip all the way out. The good stuff is gone and th stuff left is broken, ruined, or was not that good to begin with.

As for Miami, I will recount what I heard someone say after Isle of Palms, SC was blown away by Hugo. "If God wants his sandbox back, he can have it. I'm going to higher ground." So now the rich beachfront owners run the lower income people out, and soon, there will be nowhere for them to go, just like in SF, when it all got gentrified. Now it has a serious homeless problem in neighborhoods with homes they can no longer afford to live in. When are the rich going to realize that they need all sorts of people to make a viable community. I remember when Naples was desperate because they couldn't get anyone to work at the stores in Naples, because they couldn't afford to live there. The closest affordable place to llive was 30 miles inland. Convenience stores and restaurants were closing down. They were forced to create "affordable housing." What is affordable to a rich person? $900/month for a 1/br apartment. This was many years ago, but even now, who do you know working at a convenience store for minimum wage that can afford $900 for an apartment? I don't know how they ever worked it out.

I'm happy to hear about Sunshine Farms and Ed Miller's teaming up. Will have to stop by soon.
I agree about all the good nurseries along that stretch of road. Easy access off I-95 too.
Botanics has some really gorgeous and huge palms growing there!
Another good nursery for fruit trees and some beautiful ornamentals is Lychee Tree Nursery on Kanner Highway. Not too far away.

I revisited John Mackenzie of Sunshine since I started this thread and bought a big Gran Nain. I'm replacing the Dwarf Orinoco with it.
Bought a 6 foot, 5 year old Jaboticaba from Lychee Tree Nursery. Six months and it's still in the pool area in a 15 gal pot - just merrily shedding away leaves into the pool, much to my wife's delight - yea, right!

Treefrog -- remember you were into heirloom tomatoes when I visited the forum last year. John has Brandywine seedlings as well as fruit for sale right now. Also Honeybell oranges and Eureka lemon trees in various sizes. Several other citrus also available. You must check him out - especially the big cloth like bags he grows things in right on top of the ground. The neat thing is, if a hurricane hits you just tip the tree over on its' side and stake down the trunk. No loss and you don't have to dig it up.

I got the idea of trying heirlooms from you, TF, and now I have a local source. Best BLT I ever had - ate two fat sandwiches the first time.

I already have one, but it is small and I wouldn't mind having another one.

I paid $40.00 for a 5 year old tree, 4' tall. I think - 40 or 45 bucks. Next time you travel east you got to visit Lychee Tree Nursery near the Stuart/Palm City line. Check out their website. Also, close by is John Mackenzie of Sunshine farms. He has beautiful Honeybell tangelo and Eureka lemon trees. These are my next little projects.

My Jaboticaba just went through a leaf flush too.
It has fabulous new growth now.
About as tall as I am, and even wider!
Still no flowers showing though.
One of my neighbor's is sprouting buds! It's much older.
I have hope.

Dan, I grew Brandywines last year. Certainly one of the best tasting tomatoes in the world. A little shy on the production end though. Brandyboy put out a lot.
I'm only growing a few mater plants this year.
I have lots of heirloom and OP seeds if you want any!
You need to grow a Goose Creek next year.

I do think his grow bag system is fantastic too!
