Good Old Daylily Days (Photos)

It's raining again here. It rained early, and then at lunchtime again. In between I took some photos. I can't ever remember it raining so much in June. Many of the earlies are bloomed out now. But the midbloomers an the lates are keeping things popping.

WESTBOURNE GOOD OLD DAYS broke its record for blooms today. Nineteen raindrop-adorned flowers greeted me this morning. It's hard to believe I've only had this plant two seasons.

SHORES OF TIME was hit hard by thrips this year and it's taken a long time to get an unmarred bloom.

ROCKET CITY is an oldie that I'll always grow.

Zuzu following me and wanting some attention. His sister, Columbus brought me a baby snake as a present yesterday. Not exactly the gift I wanted. Zuzu stole it from her and ran to the next yard. Yay, the snake's gone, I thought. But when Columbus didn't go after him and try to reclaim it, that stinker brought it back here. He played with it for about an hour, while Columbus totally ignored him. I didn't get a photo of that action.

I have to laugh at the cat antics in your story. Just as well you didn't get a picture of the snake. Cats, no snakes, are good :-)

GREAT pictures between the rain showers! I love the one of Laughing Hyena. What an usual color it has. HUSH LITTLE BABY is deffinately my favorite today and it is such a great picture. Love the true pink color. Love it!

Thanks everyone. We have already been planning to leave the hookups, Sierraeast, and had to fight the health department so they wouldn't make us destroy the septic system, which works fine. Watching the demo was fun... What is it about destroying things that seems to bring out the excited kid in everyone? The guys were so late the first day that my husband let the kids take the Bobcat and ram into the thing...They punched big holes in it and knocked it off some of the blocks. I had to stop them before they pushed it into the carport behind. But even the crew, who does this for a living, got all excited when the destruction started. The kids looked forward to that day for months. It was so sad that they actually got started at about exactly the time our 10 and almost 14 yo ds's had to go to baseball practice! One of our dd's took LONG videos for them, though. I always have to include that we were blessed to have it to live in, and we have special memories of our time living so close together. But it was past its prime and I don't think we'll miss it now.

Bob - The Trimmer seedling was accidentally sent to me as a bonus. The pots had gotten mixed in with his Charleston Charm. It must be a sibling to his intro Santa Clara, which is Orange Blossom Trail X Mexican Elvis. It has a very large bloom - 7 inches - when its not recurving. It only recurves when temps are extremely hot. The bud count is good, and it reblooms well. I imagine this one did not get introduced because the pencil edge does not go completely around the bloom. Also, it is a reluctant pod setter. I haven't tried its pollen on anything yet. If you want a piece of it next Spring, I could sent you some. It is an evergreen.

Thanks Belle, It's a great portrait, When the museum first acquired it, it was THE highlight you saw when you walked in the front entrance. It was half way up the marble staircase, on the wall looking down at us peasants. (This was in pre-Katrina and pre-addition to the front of the museum days. ) So much joy to smile up at her, and then turn right on the stairs and mosey up to the collection of Faberge eggs and the Faberge desk set.

It's interesting that your Dearest Valentine started blooming about the same time mine did. DV never opens fully here until about 8 or 9 on a hot day -much later if we have cool overnight temps. Spring Mystique has a gorgeous pattern. I can see why you brought that one with you. Clown Parade looks pretty in your phot. Mine is always in the sun, and I never get a good photo of it. Debra

WESTBOURNE GOOD OLD DAYS & Laughing Hyena are my pics for today. Hush Little Baby is always beautiful, one of my favorites here. Perfect color, nice round shape, & just enough of a ruffle to accent it.
Isn't that bad of Zuzu to taunt Columbus like that after stealing her prize! I'm glad she ignored him :)

Rita - The cats always keep me smiling and entertained. The Laughing Hyena seedling does have unusual coloring - kind of a rusty red with gold. I really like how it looks with true red and other hot colors. I think Trimmer missed the boat by not introducing this one. Maybe he didn't care for the unusual color.

Bigack - You zeroed in on the three photos I liked best today.

Ngraham - You are so right about Hush Little Baby. I wish mine would multiply better, but I have it in part shade. Zuzu is quite the little scamp. He did the same the thing with her bird last week.

Hush Little Baby is slow to multiply here too. Marvelous garden shots. Westbourne Good Old Days looks as though it is ready to divide.

Jean - You can't miss W. Good Old Days with all those blooms.

Mantis - I didn't know if Hush Little Baby was multiplying slowly because of where I had planted, or if it was a slow multiplier in general. Thanks for the info. W. Good Old Days is definitely ready to divide. It's about to take over that raised bed. It shaded Heaven's Declaring so much, it didn't even put up any scapes. And Crimson Edgings didn't send up scapes until I gave Good Old Days a serious haircut.

For me Hush Little Baby is the perfect pink in a very pretty form and Last Snowflake so beautiful too. Very pretty clump of Good Old Days. Cheery color.

Westbourne Good Old Days is amazing and I also like Hush Little Baby. Zuzu is quite the little dickens isn't he I think Columbus had the right idea to ignore him.

Linda - Zuzu is just teasing Columbus, I think. Columbus can hold a grudge, but she had forgiven him by today. They spent the rainy afternoon cuddled together snoozing.

I have got to stay off of this forum when I'm sleepy. Here I thought I had posted an answer this morning, but I don't see it. I always enjoy the cat stories and pictures. With magificent clumps like Westbourne's good Old Days and Charmed Existence, it is surprising that I can even see past them. But I really like Hush Little Baby, but I think my favorite is actually Trimmer's seedling, Laughing Hyena. You really had some beauties today, Debra.

Oh, have mercy! Just when I thought you couldn't post any photos better than the ones before....here you go again! These may well be the BEST ever. I love, love, love all of them, but I am drooling over the first two. They are outstanding! I tried to order 'Charmed Existence' from a vendor but they were sold out of it, and now I am even sadder
seeing your photo...boo-hoo. It's prettier than I thought!
That first one, what a stunning clump shot! You could sell that one to a magazine. I also love Last Snowflake with its delicate coloring. It is so feminine & pretty...but they are all pretty. This was a wonderful treat for the eyes.
I am sure I will come back again & again to enjoy it. Thank you.

Kay - I've done the very same thing, even when I wasn't sleepy. I bought the Trimmer seedling to use in hybridizing for teeth, but it hasn't been an easy parent. I have a couple of seedlings out of it that I thought would bloom this year. But no signs of scapes on those.

Celeste - I need to make you my P.R. agent. LOL If you don't find Charmed Existence this year, you can get some from me in the spring.

w. Good Old Days and Charmed Existence are so vivid. I love the bicolors. Hush Little Baby is a beautiful pink.

My favorite "picture" though, is Land of Cotton with the Hibiscus and Phlox. Very nice!

Vickie - I love Land Of Cotton with the phlox. When I planted them together, I thought it would make a pretty picture. Last year the phlox was taller than the daylily, but this year LOC has grown quite a bit taller than in the past, so the combo doesn't work quite as well.

Kathy and Chris - W. Good Old Days is amazing. Great plant performance and superb pod setter! What do you think is going to be at the top of my Top 10 list this year?

YOur photos are wonderful today ( again ). That is an awesome clump of WGOD, and only two years old!! WOW.
Love the snake story, yes cats are so entertaining in the garden.

Of course W.Good Old Days and Charmed Existence are beautiful (I love bitones/bicolors) and impressive, so I'll pick a favorite from individual shots, and that would be Last Snowflake and gorgeous Shores of Time! Too bad thrips like it.

Oh dear. I feel so sorry for that poor snake! Apparently I am alone in this.

After those gorgeous clump shots of WB GOOD OLD DAYS and CHARMED EXISTENCE there is no chance the rest of your pictures got a fair look from me. How many fans do you think you have in that WBGOD clump now, after only 2 years?

Casey - I'm glad there are people in the world who have compassion on all God's creatures - even snakes. This spring I counted 12 fans in the WGOD clump. There are probably more now.

Debra, you are such a bad influence. (smile, smile, and ka-ching, ka-ching). I think I can't live without WESTBOURNE GOOD OLD DAYS. It looks like just the kind of happy exuberant plant that I love. But where, oh where, will I put her. Something has to go. YES, that awful May Night Salvia, it's pretty for about one week, then it flops, has ugly brown spikes and smells bad. Eeuuww.

Thank you for all the beautiful photos, and I especially like when you re-post about the same plant.
