Anyone know where I can get bales of pine needles in West Volusia

I want to spread it at the front of my yard, covering the area in front, between and a little behind my 2 magnolias and crepe myrtle that are at the front of our property. My brother lives in Charleston SC and he and his neighbors all have this in areas of their yards around treed areas and I think it looks great and prevents having to mow around these areas. Not to mention the pain in the butt that the Magnolia seeds give us when we are trying to mow and those suckers get hit by the mower blade.

I'm in the Deltona/Osteen area. I have a friend who says a nursery in Downtown Orlando sells them but I'm looking for a closer supplier if anyone can give me a tip.

Also if there are any other tips you have regarding this idea feel free to suggest to me! I'm wondering if I should put cardboard down underneath the pine needles to inhibit grass growth.

LOL I have had this idea since we last visited Chas. last year around this time. And we tried gathering pine needles from the vacant lot across the street but it was alot of work for not much coverage so I want to bite the bullet and just buy the bales.

it can be had reasonably from volusia shed, right off of i4 on 17/92 in deland. google it! (you can also get mushroom compost, potting mix, mulches of all flavors... just not pine fines. sigh.)

I am wondering if the reason they do not want you to use pine needles is that they want the rose to develop for a couple of years. @Strawchicago has posted that rose roots change over time. Baby or first year roses need something different then older more mature plants. I know that Rose Unlimited also recommends a different feeding plan for first year roses then the more mature bushes.... hopefully someone in the more know can answer why Heirloom might say this.... Also I wonder if all pine straw is the same... Much of the pine straw in Florida is from the Australian pine tree. It is now consider and invasive plant and people can't plant it, but the needles can be up to two feet long... I have a norfolk pine tree that has kind of branch(ie) needle about a half foot long with tiny needles less then 1/4 inch off the main needle. and of course the scotch pine and fraiser fir trees loose their needles at Christmas, and their needles are totally different.... I wonder what the nutrient differences are in all of them.

Kimmsr, if ajijoe has soil anything like mine, then he needs to acidify it a bunch. Mine is 8.0-9.0 pH. I had to research why a sandy soil in Florida is so darned alkaline especiallly with the assumption the abundance of wells here with "sulphur water" and my assumption sulphur=acidic, well you can realize my confusion. Well the sand does consist in large part limestone which is very alkaline. Any event I'm not sure what ajijoe should use on a large scale to make the necessary adjustments to get down to 6.2-6.5 pH. I'd like the secret as well. ps. Also Kimmsr I saw the other thread where someone thought you were a she because of your name. I somehow always knew you were a guy perhaps older, and the name always strikes me as being shorthand for: Kim or Kimm Monsiuer. Am I correct?

I don't think we have the same type of pine needles as are grown down south. It seems to me that most of the pine needles around here are short. There are some that are longer (white pines?) but not the same as down south. I haven't heard of "pine straw" in this area. If so, I would like to find some also. Good luck!

Do you think I need to put cardboard down underneath it? Or will it be pretty successful in itself to keep grass/weeds at bay?

It's a beautiful mulch but it won't stop weeds and grass. As it breaks down it will make the soil more acidic and that helps with weed control, but on your first or second year I don't think it will change the soil acidity much.

what kate said. my advice--newspapers, on top of that a THICK LAYER of leaves (can be had on every street corner), and for aesthetics, a layer of pine straw. on its own, it's not much as a mulch; but it is very pretty.
