wave petunias not waving!
Comments (21)I have the wave petunias from wally world. they all did fine - except one. I had to change its location (it could have been the shadow of eucalyptus prevented growth). Now it is flowering as expected. I like wally world because they bring new items (similarly for no particular reason discontinue some of my favorite ones). The price is always right. I paid $3.88 for a sixpack of waves. People who take care of plants are not expected to posess skills or knowledge beyond watering the plants (severe memory lapses are tolerated....many plants end up in the garbage bin). So dont expect expert advise....they are not master gardners. They can stock, water, move flats, get you the price and in rare cases help you to load your goodies. Big box stores are not out there to pick your pockets. Knowledgable customer always benifits. There is no hard and fast rule about local, mom & pop or master gardener's product will always be better. Win some, lose some - such is life....See MoreWanted wave petunias and other petunias

Comments (5)Party makes a good point that if you can't have them outside until June then you have time to grow from seed. That sounds quite late to me as most of the zone 5 garden clubs want theirs by 1st week of May. But if you can't plant them out until June then you won't have the full basket look until well into the heat of mid to late July. The full basket look that you buy at most nurseries has been growing inside in a greenhouse for 45-60 days before going out for sale. " I want to know if I planted a couple of wave petunias in the side of a hanging basket, through a coco liner, would that also be problematic" Yes. They don't hang well and the weight pulls them out plus it causes a big drain hole for the water to drain out too quickly. And if you want to plant in holes in the sides of a hanging planter then you need to use sphangum moss not a pressed cocofiber liner. You want to plant them at the outer edges of the top so they drape over the sides and hang down the sides. Dave...See MoreWave petunias dying
Comments (11)Hi momnipotent, " The bugs looked like little flies or fruit flies? " Well, if this was indoors I would say the little flies are Fungus Gnats, and it is possible that they are breeding in your potting mix. Their larva are maggots that are clear or white and about 1/4 inch long with a black head. Check your growing medium to see if you can find any small maggots with black heads. " ...but if it is algae on them, I should take care of that first? " I grow some zinnias indoors during the Winter and if algae get started in a pot (which is always a possibility) the algae uses up all of the nutrients and the plant dies of starvation. I lost several pots of zinnias to algae before I realized the seriousness of the problem. Now, when algae start to be a problem, I use a product called Physan 20, about 2 teaspoons per gallon in my plant water as an algae preventative. Physan 20 is a multipurpose product, that is used as a disinfectant, sanitizer, deodorizer, fungicide, bactericide, algaecide, and virucide. Many greenhouses use it. I use a lot of it in my indoor zinnia project and some in my outdoors zinnia gardens. I literally buy the stuff by the gallon, and I am on my third gallon now. You could probably get by with the 8-ounce size of Physan 20. We don't know for sure that the algae is harming your petunias, and we don't know for sure that the fungus gnat maggots are harming them either. Those are just possibilities.
