Brunnera Jack Frost

Hi all

I have been posting in the perennials forum for information on brunnera Jack Frost - "love at first sight" and thought that I would check into this group as to whether anyone has had success with this plant. I do have a microclimate in my tiny 17 x 17.5 ft back yard - 6 ft fenced townhouse property. Before I "invest" in this gorgeous plant, has anyone been able to winter it over?

Three healthy and happy plants are growing in my garden, and they have easily survived 2 winters, so far. They are not the first perennials to emerge in spring, so late frosts don't seem to hit them.

They can still be quite pricey at some nurseries, but I bought 2 of my plants at a big box store (Rona) for no more than other perennials in the same size pot. (I don't think they realized what they had.) The other was bought, on sale, at Home Depot.

I absolutely adore this Brunnera! With a little protection, it should grow well in a protected spot in your yard.

Oh Doris, you sure got a good deal!!!

Mine is new this year, so I don't know how hardy yet...I paid $15 for a gallon size, so I guess that's not too bad for whats it's worth. I also having been growing the plain species Brunnera macrophylla for years and that one is indeed very hardy.

My Brunnera Jack Frost are up and flowering. They are somewhat shaded by a tree that is just beginning to leaf out. I got them last year and many leaves turned black in the fall due to all the rain. Now they look great. I think I'll try Looking Glass when the sales start. That one is lovely too.

yes, the weather is a bit colder and wetter than normal, but not that much (until this week). And it is blooming a tiny bit. I also have another brunnera (Spring Yellow) blooming wonderfully. So I don't think its the weather, but ya never know.

The proof is always in the pudding. :O) If you look at the photo below, the biggest Brunnera is a division from the main plant. The others in front are seedlings from the main plant. In essence, some will come true and others not but you will find out early. Out of a dozen seedlings only 2 were truly JFs.

My Jack Frost does OK. It has made one baby in 4 years. I like the plain green - it does very well. Also Brunnera macrophylla 'Langtrees'is spotted and spreads, as well as seeds itself around freeley. Maybe not as showy as Jack Frost per leaf, but better overall frosted effect for me, since plants are bigger and more spread around.
