I'm a rose lover first and if you've grown roses in my area any length of time you are very aware of Thrips. My solution on the rose problem was to eliminate the roses that were the Thrips magnets. This was after many years of frustrating alternatives. I don't spray insecticides unless the health of the plant is threatened so the old standbye of spraying Orthene on the buds every 3 days was out for me. I am usually forced to use a miticide at least once a season, and the product AVID (a miticide) is effective against adult Thrips, but not their eggs. On a daylily where the bloom is only open for a day I would think that this would be pointless. However, there are some solutions that a good company called Rosemania has listed. One is your spinosid. BTW remember that many times the chemicals available to customers via box stores, local nurseries etc. are of a lesser strength of the active ingredient then from a chemical supplier. I say this in case you are shocked by the prices.

Hi maryl, what kind fo roses are thrips magnets? I notice that my hybrid musk rose felicia was much more affected than my hybrid tea peace.

In my experience all roses will get a certain amount of Thrips, but light colored roses seem to draw them like crazy. However it doesn't stop with just the color. There are exceptions to the general rule. Some light colored roses don't show the damage as much as others and some dark colored roses turn into crispy globs (and after all it's the visible damage we object to). Some years for no reason at all the population will explode. 4 years ago the Thrips seemed to be at peak nuisance level across the U.S. Everyone was complaining. The next year the population was reduced, and then again reduced the year after. Mother nature has peaks and valleys and I don't have the hubris to think I can outguess her. Just about the time I do, she will throw Chili Thrips into the mix and we can all run for the hills if they become the norm.
