Campfire Rose?

Has anyone grown the Canadian Artist rose "Camfire"? Looks amazing and hardy, a repeat bloomer. I've had Emily Carr since 08 then it basically died this yr. it was not a repeat bloomer, Campfire says to be. That's a major quality I look for. So any feed back would be awsome :)

I don't have any feedback on Campfire - I just wanted to comment on Emily Carr. That is very strange that you never had any repeat, for me she blooms almost steady all summer once she starts. Campfire does sound more hardy than Emily Carr - I have to pack my EC with straw in the winter to protect the lower 12 inches of cane. I cut it back to that size every spring anyway; it regrows quickly.

I don't know how Campfire does in the ground, but the many pots of Campfire that I have seen so far seem to have a rather floppy habit so the branches were kind of weak and arching... which I did not care for. I wonder if they really look that way once mature?

All of my mail orders came in the last two weeks. It's been planting time. When I take my trip I like to start with Lowes in Dekalb. Then hit The Perennial Place in Naperville followed by Chalet Nursery. Now I can check an Ace Hardware as well. The goal is to return home with at least one plant that I have not grown before.

I ordered 5 this year from Cornhill Nursery. They were ownroot bareroot and are potted up ready to grow. I have a cold spot out front and I keep losing roses there over winter. I wanted something very hardy, on the smaller side, and colorful in a small mass planting that I dont need to fuss over.

Onewheeler... Maybe it doesn't have to last to awfully long to please me -) Anyway when it opened it's first blooms I wasn't for sure if I would like or not. It grew on me thou enough to get some more. I had her planted in an odd spot because the rose in her new bed had not grown back yet. They clearly could not take the raised nature of this bed. Campfire should do well here thou this was late in the season to have moved her.

I agree, the ones I have gotten from the nursery are usually much more established, plus they have the one year warranty. In the Calgary area the biggest roses I have gotten were grown in paper pots and sold at Golden Acre, I have a hunch these are from Eagle Lake nursery, who I'm guessing supplies Calgaryplants.com (photos of roses are in the same paper pots). I've also noticed these roses have a metal tag on the stem saying they are Pan Am roses. They have very thick stems, I wonder if they might even be grafted? Whats ironic is when I look at the tag on the cheap roses from Walmart, they say they are from Pan American nursery, and also have the same thick stems. They cheaper ones ($8 or $10) sometimes have very few roots, while the bigger ones ($13) are better established. I've had to return a cheaper one once because the roots were hacked off too much. At least Walmart has a good return policy. Most other roses I see are in black pots in Superstore, Canadian Tire and the nurseries. These usually say they are from Bylands in Kelowna and have a much thinner main stem, I wonder if these are therefore own-root? Lol in the last two years I've spent as little as $5 (clearance at CT) to $35 (mail order incl. shipping). There's something enticing about the cheap rose that makes it, it's almost like winning the lottery. For example, the body bag Therese Bugnet I got last year from Home Depot with almost all roots hacked off, she's a few feet tall this year! I think I lucked out with the mild winter.

I just purchased Campfire this year so I have nothing to report till I watch her mature. Just a little baby yet. I'll try to remember to take notes. :)

I'm not sure why the Emily only bloomed once for me, so pretty while it lasted. I was sad to see her this spring, I cut it back hard and it was actually starting to produce a few sprigs but the caterpillars ate them. I'm not gonna give up on it though as each year the blooms were becoming more stunning, just only once per summer. I think I'll look for a Campfire. Honalee please keep us updated, pic when blooming please :))

EC does very well for me, I had almost no dieback this year. There are buds already too. Yay.

As with all roses other than rugosas I plant them deep.

Campfire was only released commercially this year, so the only mature specimens will be in the trial and propagation beds.

It's normal for an own-root rose to be a flimsy stick the first couple of years. I don't know the habit of the mature canes of Campfire but it's likely that if it's not grafted, it will be skinny and floppy for a couple of years at least.

Emily Carr I can attest makes very robust, thick and upright canes. I bought her for my mom and she is a big, tall strong plant and repeats well.

I just planted Camp Fire the other day - she`s blooming and quite eyecatching. I hope it does well.
