Hi Frank:I have a healthy strong one from your Sal's like fig.All the rest died.
Also from the UCDavis ,very few cuttings survived.
Had better luck with what i received from George Michalev.
No luck with Black Col de Dame wich i was very eager to root.
Also Native de Argentille died again.
Had cuttings the second time from UCDAVIS,and still no luck.
Wht Ischia also died.
Osborn Prolific (rust) from UCDAVIS also died.
Monstruese is also Almost dead.
I received rooted cuttings from Antonio Esposito,Violette de B,Green Fig,and Desert King,all alive and well.
Received a new strain of VDB,from Leon in NM,and is alive and well.
Received a very small Rooted cutting of Mission,from,Justin in Texas,and is alive and growing strong with no Fig mosaic visible.Now all i hope is that it will be a true Mission,but looking at the leaves it is!!!!!!.
All my six mature figs have main crop the size of a kernell corn seed now.
It does look like i will be loaded ,and swiming in figs this year.!!!!!!!PEACE.

I did not have any luck at all growing figs the plastic bag method. I had some luck puting them in root starter soil with a soda bottle with a bottom cut out over the the top of the cutting. Also, planting fig cutting horizontally looks very promising for me.

I have five Sal's fig cutting that I received from Herman and Gene that look very healthy.

I have two healthy looking Hardy Chicago cutting that I received from Herman.

Daniel from Vancouver, WS sent me some unknown fig cuttings and some Petite Negri. The unknowns did not make it. I have two Petite Negri that look like they are doing good.

Roy from Washington State sent me some Desert King and Negronne cuttings. One of the Desert Kings is really struggling. It will put out a small leaf or two, than the leafs will die and it will put out another leaf or two. Right now it has one little leaf on it. I have some other cuttings that I put in a pot a month ago. They look green, but have not leafed out yet. Two of the Negronne look like they will make it.

The two Col De Dame from Davis look like they will make it. The verdict is still out on the Vernio and Conadria.

Two of three fig cutting that I stole from a farm in an isolated village in BaJa California and smuggled into the US are doing great. I hope some day someone on FF will be able to tell me what kind they are.

I planted five rows of fig cutting horizontally in the grown sometime after May first. Four were unknowns and one was a Brown Turkey that Herman gave me. One of the unknown rows has four small fig trees on it with about five leaves on each. Two of the other unknows have each put up a fig tree. All look real healthy.

I am air rooting the five fig trees that I received from Mr. Robin. Also Air rooting a White Genoa, Celeste, and an Alma. I will see how they will do in a couple of weeks.

I have had some successes and some failures. It has been fun trying out different rooting methods. To me that is what it is all about.

Like Vern, I failed when using the plastic bag for some reason, and apparently had the wrong mix in my cups that held too much water. After several starts and stops I'm now trying turface as a rooting medium in clear cups and it seems to be working better than anything else I've tried. It's easier to know when to add water because the turface color changes as it dries out.
I received Nazarti, Col de Dame, Alma, Excel, and King from UCD and have one Col de Dame and one Alma flourishing in a gallon pot. Have one Col de Dame, one King, a couple Alma, and an Excel with visible roots and green pushing in clear cups and several of all five varieties that I haven't given up hope on yet. Had several that I probably tried to move to gallon pots too soon that died.
My first efforts at air layering earlier this spring were 100%, and without a doubt that's the preferred method if at all possible. My air-layered Kadota had figs on it which I removed when I potted it up, but they came back and I left them. One of my LSU Gold air-layered trees with about a 5/8" caliper flourished from the first day it was potted, never wilting that I noticed. The other LSU Gold was larger with about a 7/8" caliper, but I left it on the mother tree longer and it had a better root mass; even so it lost all its leaves but is now leafing out again. Both of the LSU Golds are in 3-gallon pots.

I am a long way from a full report. I have about 250 plants already in one gallons, most of which are doing fine, though just starting out. I have about 500 cuttings in cups, some of which are progressing, while others have gone nowhere. Still have several hundred cuttings in bags, which I hope to "cup" this week. I have had the the most problems with cuttings received from the east coast (no known reason why) and cuttings from USDA/Davis this year have performed very, very poorly (in the past I have had about 80% on their cuttings, and this year maybe 10%). I have had some problems with the all vermiculite cuttings getting overwatered, because I had to switch mixtures in mid season, due to coarse vermic not being available. Having the different mixes has caused me to overwater the vermic cups, I think. the 50/50 vermic/perlite mix is working well. ****It is still critical that the cups do not stand in water, but are allowed to drain.**** I am seriously pursuing shipping plants. I have my nursery license now, and am slowly deciphering the requirements for shipping to each state, so if people are interested in plants, E-mail me from Figs4fun website, and we can work this out together. This is all new, and will be a little rough at the beginning, I am sure. I should have at least 100 varieties available later in the year.

I was given a poorly-shaped Kadota this spring. I cut off four branches, each about 12-14 inches long and buried them about 10-12 inches deep in the soil around the planted tree. All four have rooted and are pushing new growth. What an easy process!

I too am having very poor success rates with the UCD cuttings from this year. And all this time I thought it was just me being sucky at rooting. Last year, I got close to 98% take rate from cuttings received from the CRFG. This year, I think I'm hitting less than 10% take rate.

I tried the planting the cuttings horizontally method and none have come up. I may have not watered them enough, it got very dry here in May. So I would not take my results as a big critique of that method. I tried a couple grafts and they failed. I should have painted them to keep them from drying out, I think that was the biggest problem. Now I am doing my usual rooting in pots with Promix seed starter and a baggie over them, that method usually works for me.

Some good news, the one baby fig I left uncovered outside over the winter I had given up for dead but it is now growing back from the roots. It is an Excel from Gene.

This year I have had a good success for all varieties with the plastic bag method.

I have none lost. Now IÂm trying to root with green cuttings, with and without
hormones. I have had success in 53 over 74 scions.

My UCDavis cuttings have been disappointing as well. I had about 75% last year and thought I would just get a couple this year not wanting too many small plants to coddle over the summer (I tend to travel and it makes things difficult at times).

Brown Turkey rooted well, 3 out of 3 successes. Unfortunately upon placing them outside this was one of the newly rooted plants I lost to bunnies (or squirrels).

278-128 0 out of 3. Never even got any leaves or roots showing, the cuttings just dessicated.

143-36 Two out of three rooted. One of these was also eaten by the bunnies (or squirrels).

I requested V de Bordeaux, but I guess I actually requested Verte which they did not send (which is fine as I already have two of these planted at my parents house).

An amazingly kind GW member sent me 2 other varieties this spring which are doing well (protected from the varmints in the yard).

I think I'm going to look into that turface stuff mentioned previously for next year, though.

I think I got 3 out of three 278-128's to root last year. I think I still have a couple 5 gallon plants looking for homes. I am hoping my in-ground one will fruit this year, so I'll know what it will do.

i am new at rooting cuttings but out of the 4 cuttings i have my white fig fom greece is doing very well already budding and rooting. i havd planted this one directly in soil, mind you when my uncle sent them to me it had acouple of small tiny roots on it already so that helped me out.
my king fig cutting from greece i planted it sideways in the ground and its a slow progress but its looking good.
my other one i planted inside and has mot done anything.
my 4th cutting also from greece i am trying the plastic bag method.i have not seen anything yet, no roots.its been 3 weeks and nothing. is this normal or am i doing anything wrong? i have it in a 1 gallon pot with a clear pop bottle over it with the cutting about 9 inches long and about 3-4 inches in the soil.

all of my cuttings i am using just soil. and a little root stimulator.

Sottfsmith, don't give up on your cutting that you planted horizontally. I have two rows that have not put out any leaves yet. The other day a deer got into my graden and kicked up one of the cuttings. It had some nice white roots on it. Yours maybe doing the same.

Where do you buy the Turface stuff? It sounds like something I need to try.

I found the Turface MVP at a local irrigation company. It's used a lot on baseball infields.
You can google and get to the manufacturer website to submit an email to learn who has it in your area; that's what I did.

They will advise you of the distributor or dealer nearest you if you email them.

This years UCD cuttings were disappointing. Being new at this with only one unknown tree, last season I received cuttings from Jack. Just so you don't think I'm a complete klutz this is the result of last years cuttings.

1 doubtful, has one small leaf.

It is interesting to note that when Gene's cuttings arrived, I planted 5 of them upon arrival. These flurished and are now growing well. The remaining 5 I kept in the refridge for a month or so. These did not do well.

If it were not for Gene's generousity in giving me the Sal's cuttings I wouldn't have had any success this season.

Peg, it sounds like Gene'S Sal fig tree is one of the easiest figs to root from cutting. That figs prodigy is spreading across the country.

This has been a good thread for me. I was thinking that I was the only one that could not get a lot of fig cutting to root. I guess it is like people going to the casinos. You hear about the money they won and never all the money they lost.

See my message about 100% with UC Davis cuttings. My method worked perfectly, using only sand in plastic cups. No need for bags, vermiculite and other hard-to-get stuff. I bought the plastic cups at a party store, used a hammer and nail to make holes in the bottom of the cups, put in a cutting, filled with sterilized sand (about $3 for 50 lbs at Home Depot), added water and waited. We got 12 out of 12 rooting and growing.

Furthermore, we also tried this with cuttings taken directly from 2 types of dormant fig (Black Mission and an unknown)- ie., without refrigeration. They worked even better, with faster, stronger growth. I know that this latter variation is only possible in mild weather areas like California, however.

Try the sand! It is easier, and for me at least, was 100% successful.

I just wanted to add to this thread, that I MIGHT have some left over cuttings. I might just try and root them anyway I could always trade'em as rooted cuttings. SO if anyone else has some leftover or numerous cuttings of the same quality post up what you'd like to trade them for.

One I would DEFINITELY like receive is the QP fig.....that was one variety I was sooo looking forward to watch grow. All 4 cuttings died on me.

If anyone sees something I have posted above let me know. I still have a LOT of my unknown cuttings, which grows like I weed I might add. :)

I have 3 Jack's QP, (no Figs yet). They are too young to take cuttings yet but I will gladly share some with you as soon as they are old enough. Right now all the growth, which is substantial, is green.

At least on my QP in this climate what little wood is there is very soft and willowliy. I've had to stake to keep them upright.

The varieties I would prefer are those that can take heat and humidity, as during the rainy monsoon seasons, we can get heavy torrential rains for weeks on end.

I went through my old 'trading emails' and was curious in getting an update from those I sent my unknown variety to........how did they grow for yall, did they bear fruit and more importantly, what's your opinion in the variety type!?!?!? Was I close in thinking it appears to be a Sal's variety? :)
