Sheep Manure for Lawn

Hi,

I was interested in the posting on fat grass, however Glen had indicated that sheep manure may be a better choice for our prairie climate. I'm having some trouble finding information on this. Some questions I have:

1. When Glen says to keep moist, how long does that mean? Will I have to water daily, every other day, weekly? And for how long (I'm assuming until the manure has disappated into the lawn)?

2. Can I spread grass seed at the same time?

3. Is there an ideal time of day and/or day time temperature during which this should be done (the past week or so we have been anywhere between 22 and 30 degrees)?

4. Does sheep manure usually have weed seeds in it?

5. How long will it take to get through the grass into the soil (I have two dogs and I would prefer they did't drag the manure in on themselves, so I will probably have to do front and back at seperate times)?

6. The bags I have seen indicate coverage of 250 square feet/15 kg. Should I apply at that rate?

7. I'm assuming I apply this with a rake...

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any other imput I might need, please feel free to let me know!

If the commercial bags of sheep manure have been well composted at a certain temp, you shouldn't have that many weed seeds if any at all.

Water once a day for the first two weeks, then twice per week. After one month resume your regular watering schedule.

The only fertilizer we use on grass is manure. We cut the grass and sprinkle on a half inch or so of composted manure before we're expecting rain. The grass quickly grows up to hide the manure. (We also always allow all the clippings to stay on the grass.)

I will probably get them all for real, for saying /typing this. I have not had the flu or any other virus in many years. The only foods poisoning I had was traced to raw fish, not manure. It was bad for 3 day, but no fever, just blood. If one compost 30-60 days or tills under 60-90 days before planting seeds, only radishes will be ready before the 90 ABOVE ground rule or the 120 BELOW ground rule. As I said many on the net has preached the rule, but one gardener use Raw horse manure as a side dress & his family did not have a virus all summer, that includes his 60 year old mother. I guess the organ garden food make my family strong or we are composting everything the right way. I think one should own what they do & take responsibility for it.

Certainly safe for composting but better to compost before applying to veggie beds. Sheep manure is considered a 'hot' manure and may burn plants if applied directly. Plus, there are always issues of disease pathogens with regards to edible plants that are most effectively dealt with by composting. NPK will be similar to that of horse manure.....and if grazed sheep, may contain as many weed seeds too.

The guidelines for using animal manures in the garden, where food crops are grown, is that the manure should not be applied sooner than 90 days of harvest for above ground crops, ie, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, squashes, melons, or 120 days before harvest for root crops, ie. beets. carrots, parsnips, turnips. How much to apply depends on what your soil needs. if you soil needs 50 pounds of manure per 1,000 square feet it does little to apply 50 pounds per 100 square feet except create problems for plant growth. Sheep manure is considered a cool manure so tilling it in and waiting 30 days to plant should be adequate.
