Preparing evergreens for winter...correct way to tie one up?

I've googled it and watched a 'This Old House' video on the subject. Different methods recommended. One suggested tying string to the base of the trunk and them spiraling it up to the top then back down to the base and tying it again. This Old House's Roger, only took a short piece of string and tied the top together on an arborvitae. Aren't some of the lower branches going to splay out that way?

Any experience with tying up arborvitaes, upright junipers? And should I be thinking about erecting a burlap wind barrier to give my first year arborvitae more protection?

Thanks :-)
