Some flowers for Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all you Dads. Unfortunately my Magnificent Dad daylily was not blooming today, as it was on this special occasion a year ago. Guess it's really going to be a late bloomer this year.

A 4-year-old me proud of Daddy for catching the big fish. My dad passed away 8 years ago. He was a wonderful father and fisherman. In the background, you can see part of my mother's garden. That's where I got my love of flowers.

WILD RED HEART had its ffo today. I'm posting it first because it's the one my father would have most liked. Red flowers were his favorites.

LAST SNOWFLAKE just doesn't want to be a late bloomer. It started yesterday.

BELA LUGOSI was looking very dark and velvety today.

Lovely blooms for you on this fathers day. I too remember my dad and always will even though he passed away when I was a young teenager. Dad loved to garden and I am sure my love of gardening started there. He especially loved roses. My favorite bloom today is VENUS'S FIRE. Love the hot color.

My SD called and wished me a Happy Mothers Day. I was very touched because we have had a rough time of it. My SS did not, but I decided not to worry about it. My kids bought me a flower and a card for the 1st time. They are 16 and 11. They were with their Dad, but came to spend the day with me. My Ex never reminds them or offers to take them shopping, so I was so surprised that I received anything this year. My 11 yr old even told me that he spent his own money on the flower!!! I was very happy just to spend the day with them.

Lynn, how was Jurassic World? We thought about seeing it but my mother did not want to go and we didn't want to leave her home alone. Mtnrdredux, the peaches sound divine--- that's next on my list to make! Living in the peach state, we have marvelous peaches at our local farmers market and in our CSA shares. Now, about the casserole....it is good in a 1980s church potluck kind of way but not very good for you....the ingredients are chicken, broccoli, lemon juice mayonnaise, cream of chicken soup, curry, and breaded topping. I did my best with fresh broccoli, organic, free range chicken, healthy choice soup and homemade bread croutons, but did not even bother to total the calories in each serving. I did NOT want to know! Of course our darling future SIL loved it, so I can see it may make more regular appearances at the table in the future. Lyban, BBQ sounds great, and how nice your DD is taking over this celebration. I will be happy when and if our DD does the same :-) DLM, don't you wonder what we did before cellphones? I remember calling my parents on one fixed day of the week because I knew they would be home then and I could catch them on the phone. Dee, your typical "Dad" meal was my fall back position if I hadn't had time to make the casserole :-) Gsciencechick, it was miserably hot here as well, we stayed indoors most of the day. And that was one of the reasons I was glad not to be,grilling either.! Annie, sounds like you had a great day regardless, and Joanie, your DH is lucky to get two celebrations!

Rita - I am liking Venus's Fire more with each bloom. I'm hoping the watermark will become more defined with subsequent blooms.

Jean - You know how much I love LAST SNOWFLAKE. I'm always happy to see that big, gorgeous bloom again.

Natanya - Blueberries and Cream always looks good enough to eat. The bloom isn't as round as some newer eyed and edged cultivars, but the color is always great here.

Big Ack, Kay and Nancy - Back Scratcher is a wonderful toothy unusual form. I have some seedlings growing with BS as a parent that I hope will be as vigorous. Crimson Edges is recuperating after I set so many pods on it last summer. It has put up only two scapes out of six fans, and the bud count is low this year, partially due to the dormants planted around it going crazy multiplying and blocking most of its sun. I don't know if it was worth it to do so much seed setting with it. I'm having a hard time keeping its babies alive. They have suffered a double whammy of heat and slug attacks.

LAST SNOWFLAKE is the one and only one I'm going to give myself permision to get. I never noticed before how pointy the sepals are.

But my favorite of the group is BELA LUGOSI after I was unable to get a good picture in my garden. This picture is perfect. Enjoyed it very much.

Beautiful photo of you and your dad, my dad also use to take me fishing and target shooting as a teenager. Your daylilies are all very pretty but Blueberries and Cream is my favorite with Crimson Edgings coming in a close second.

Christine - LAST SNOWFLAKE only has the pointy sepals after cool nights. For the previous two years here with night temps in the high 70-80s, I have not seen the pointy sepals. LAST SNOWFLAKE is well worth adding to your garden. It never has a bad bloom here. The Bela Lugosi photo was my favorite of these, too!

What camera do you use to get the clear color? It's nice to see people on posts. I too have many memories of fishing with my father, and he was so patient to untangle all my snags and backlashes.

I think Back Scratcher is my favorite of this bunch.

Mantis - I use a NIKON D70 for photographing flowers. It's an older NIKON that is the best I have found for capturing the color of daylilies. Unfortunately Nikon changed its chip on subsequent models, and the newer ones my husband has make everything look too blue purple. This camera model is so good at getting the daylily colors that I'm looking to buy a slightly used model for when my camera bites the dust.

BELA LUGOSI is looking very handsome in your pic of him. I also like CRIMSON EDGINGS quite a bit, and don't remember seeing that one before.
