Mother's Day/Father's Day

How do you folks deal with those days? Do you hope the entire day will go fast so you can forget about it? Or does your family do the same things they would with a bio-parent? Do you ever get flowers or a gift? My stepson left a voicemail message on our machine wishing me a Happy Stepmother's Day, and I cried, because I was touched. You want recognition, even with no bio-children of your own, yet it's hard to ask for. Strangers wished me happy Mother's Day, and I thanked them (with no explanation). It felt good.

My SD called and wished me a Happy Mothers Day. I was very touched because we have had a rough time of it. My SS did not, but I decided not to worry about it. My kids bought me a flower and a card for the 1st time. They are 16 and 11. They were with their Dad, but came to spend the day with me. My Ex never reminds them or offers to take them shopping, so I was so surprised that I received anything this year. My 11 yr old even told me that he spent his own money on the flower!!! I was very happy just to spend the day with them.

I don't expect it so I am not disappointed. Misc holidays were not celebrated in my family except in the immediate family. I can only remember two birthday parties for me in my life time. My husband's family does it, but it is out of duty. It is the day to day treatment that I care about most. I had rather have a carnation from the grocery store for no reason, than roses on my birthday.

Lol, our DS is also an edgy sentimentalist when it comes to picking cards.We've received some (strange, weird) cards over the years. He is also the one who keeps in touch and remembers all the important dates, like birthdays,mother's day, father's day, christmas etc...He is right there when we need something. Who knows what goes through his mind when he is picking out cards?

Digital rain guage

DH has the digital rain gauge and LOVES, LOVES, Loves it! The local radio station used to call him after a rain to see how much our town got! LOL After DB saw it, he went out and got one too. The only thing DH has had go wrong is the batteries went dead and a gusher came thru and he had to rely on his regular gauge, which isn't in the best spot! He was po'd! LOL

My mother was three, living in NYC then, but soon to move to rural RI to get away from the city's diseases and crime. Her grandmother and uncle were already infected with TB and would die on the farm. One of my mother's first memories was when she nearly fell into her grandmother's grave while attending her uncle's burial; they'd dug both at the same time as the second death was imminent. I have a photo of my mother at the butter churn with her grandmother in the background (smoking a clay pipe!). Mom got a superior education in a one-room school. Her parents moved back to the city she was 13. The high school principal said he didn't know where to place her beacause she tested out of all their curriculum. She hated the city. My grandmother's answer to my questioning why they'd left the farm puzzled me until I was an adult. She said, "The bulls were getting over the fences." (Do you understand? Remember, my mother was 13.)

I was just talking about this with a coworker yesterday. I was saying how we think we're so advanced medically compared to the past but in 100 years, people are going to be wondering what us heathens were thinking by cutting people open to fix problems and treating cancer with poison! I think everything will be done non-invasively and they will have scans so detailed it will diagnose and maybe even treat all conditions. They will also probably have a cure for cancer not unlike a simple round of antibiotics today. It's fun to think about.

I tell my stepfather Happy Father's Day.
I try to avoid talking to my stepmother as much as possible. It depends on how you treat the sons and daughters as to whether or not you need to get that recognition.
