Hey msbatt, I'm not exactly sure. I got some white profusion butterfly bush seeds last winter. I started them indoors and kept 3 for spring planting. Two were white...the third was a light purple. I have no idea about the cultivars I asked for although ONE forum member was offering ellen's blue seed...I may just end up buying a small plant online if i can't find some seed to experiment with.

They are two different species of the genus buddleia, the purples, yellows and white are species davidii and fountain is alternifolia. I have never seen seeds offered of the fountain one BUT Mountain Valley Growers offers it as plants for less than $4.00, and High Country Gardens for somewhat more. Regular butterfly bushes can also be trained into standards. I have two that I started as cuttings last fall and trained this summer and they look quite nice. Thanks Kim and Murray, As far as picking them up from a local store, I'm in zone 4B (Minnesota) and I don't believe any stores carry them. I have 3 from last year all started from seed. one white profusion outside (mulched, but will be surprised if it comes back) one white profusion potted inside (looking good) and one purplish crossbreed mulched outside in area sheltered from wind (hopeful that one WILL come back). The "buzz" versions sound interesting but I think I want to try some larger compact plants if possible. It's not a space issue, it's a "plant killing winter" issue. I may just buy one plant and see if I can trade seeds with someone for the other. decisions, decisions....thanks again!
