Although it is convenient, that Zone-Lookup site does not give an accurate report. For my zip code, it reports Zone 8b, although I am in Zone 9a. (I am well east of the St. Johns River, exactly five miles from the Atlantic Ocean.) Please do not use that website as your reference. Use the map in my first post.

And you map is also incorrect. It shows Pinellas County as 9B, but only the very northern portions of Pinellas are Zone 9. I posted a message about this last year about this time with a response from the County Extension Office that stated we are Zone 10 regardless of the maps, but unfortunately you'll have to take my word for it because we (Florida GW) seem to get hit by the gremlins so frequently that our archives are virtually non-existent.

This last week of cold weather should tell you what zone you are in. Most years I never see anything below 26, last year it was 23 this year it's hit 21 in my backyard twice. At the MADIS station at Lake Woodruff it was 19 one morning. Here in DeLand we're on the dividing line between 9a and 9b. This year we are 9a. If the USDA ever gets around to revising the map we may be in zone 10. ha ha. I just wish Mother Nature would pay more attention as to where these zones are.

If you visit any of the other non-Florida forums, or do trading, I've found it important to use the Heat Zone numbers as well as the cold hardiness zone. And sometimes the Sunset ones. I usually give it out, never thought of simply adding it there, thanks for the idea.

Johnjsr and Tom, I guess we can only use the zone maps as guidelines. Perhaps our weather is inconsistant...changing?

lovetheyard, when your eyes aren't so good, it is hard to read the small print on your posted map...and western PSL is Zone 10.

Test - I've made several entries into that Zone field on my personal page that are only partially showing up here....

Ah ha, the Zone field will take up to 30 characters on the setup page, yet postings will only display 20 characters, what's with that?

Wwll, today it seeems like Z 11 or maybe a 12 ? ( har har ) but last Jan. it was surely Z 8 or maybe a Z 7 ? here in my backyard everything froze and I am near Tampa Bay which is supposed to 'moderate' the temps.? so I just put "st Pete, fl", but even then there are inland areas here in St Pete , that were colder than me, back in Jan. and had heavy frost where I didn't.... go figure......... sally

Always considered we were on the border 9b to 10a, but the referenced chart clearly shows all of st lucie county and martin to be in 9b.

Sharbear, take a closer look and you look clearly in 9b to me.

I'm wondering if there's a different map than the one in this post that shows the Tampa/St Pete area to be zone 10a. I always thought I was in 9b, but see some in the same area listing 10a. So, now I'm confused!

The zip code look-up says I'm in 9B but the line between A and B goes through my backyard! Zones aren't 100% reliable anyway, just guidelines. Mother Nature refuses to be put in a box.

With all of the new members, it is time to bump this back up. Several are missing both city and zone. (That is very helpful information to have when giving advice.)

Luther, as discovered by Tom somewhere in the posts above, only 20 characters are displayed. In yours, the number "9" is the 20th character, so the "b" is truncated and not displayed. You could abbreviate "zone" to the letter "z" like I did in mine in order to get your zone 9b to properly display.

It's because you used special characters (that to them) are not allowed. Remove whatever character you have on each side of FL even if it is a space. You may replace it with a slash / as they are allowed.

Mine was showing up with some % symbols for a few months too, but it seems to have gone away. I did try to fix it when I noticed it, but it made no difference then. Now the %s are gone. Hmmmmm.
