Colors - How do YOU describe your daylilies?

Sometimes (most of the time!) I am at a loss when trying to describe the colors of the blooms on my seedlings. I'm "color challenged, so to speak." Today, I found a chart on Wikipedia, which I think will help me quite bit. What I am curious about is this - is there a set of color samples available commercially? What I'm thinking of is some kind of color wheel or set of color strips that can be carried out to the garden to be used to "match" the color and find the color description?

That's some chart! I know that if I tried to print it out the colors would be a bit different. How about those paint color strips? I would say there is no need to have every shade of the rainbow,but like for reds you can have an orange-red,blue-red,pink-red,or just like fire engine red.Go to a place like Home Depot and see what they have.Best thing is,they're free!

I like the good old box of CRAYOLA Crayons. Now those people know color. I'm serious too. I work at a flower farm and the color descriptions given by the plant people are so off the wall it's unbelievable.
Anyway, that's my thoughts--CRAYOLA--hands down!!

Joy: The seller's name on the LA is Wormman20030, his actual name is Marvin Wilkins and he is from Falkner, Mississippi. I bought from two different vendors in February and March. Remember, I am in Texas and in February I am out in the garden while some of the rest of y'all are looking at snow. I knew they could not dig daylilies in snow and asked when they did ship, and they told me mid April which was fine with me. The other vendor send a beautiful shipment in April but I heard nothing from Marvin. I believe is was the beginning of May I sent him and email and he replied that he was a one man operation and would try to get to it the next week. Weeks went by, and nothing. I sent another email which was ignored. I finally got fed up, left negative feedback, and later took advantage of the mediating service at LA to request a refund. It is extremely hot here in Texas, too hot to plant. I continued to hear nothing from Marvin and wrote again to the LA. They said that Marvin had written them (but not me) and told them he was going to process a refund and all I had to do is provide a Paypal address. (Let me put in a plug for the LA mediating service here, I was upset, they were patient and understanding) I sent him my Paypal address and again, heard nothing. No emails, no explanation, no refund. I feel that from February to June is an unconscionable wait without explanation. If something was wrong, he could have emailed, he was well enough to email the LA, but has ignored me. The money is not a lot to some people, I understand that some people spend thousands on daylilies and I wish I could, but it is enough that I can't afford to buy more daylilies this year and of course even if I could, it is too hot to plant. I felt that since I have been talking about this incident it is only fair to mention the vendor's name. I would more than welcome him to come here and offer an explanation; as of now I have no explanation, no daylilies, and no refund. Some very nice people have taken their time to email me with the names of vendors who they feel have integrity; after getting over my initial hurt I think I will use the DA again but under the guidance of some of those more experienced. Some points were made that there are good, hardworking vendors that sell quality plants and I agree because the other vendor was like that, so my beef is not with the LA, it is with Marvin.

Well, it's not as if the daylilies are very hard to take care of. Certainly no more so than any other flower and lots easier than most. And I had to do most of the hardscape as I needed a place to plant. By the time I had gotten the daylily crazies all the easier places to do a garden were all filled already so I started on terraces and raised beds. Lots of works (and money) but the results were so worth it. But I was so focused on daylilies that most of those things that were moved for hardscape projects (and mostly moved back) that died because it was never the right time of year to move things, I just let go. This sping started buying many and bringing back. Not always the exact same. Like I had ALASKA shasta daiseys (tall). I bought SNOWCAP this spring as they are dwarf and work better. I had some plain yellow yarrows and bought some stunning red STRAWBERRY SEDUCTION yarrows this spring. I bought the fancy new hot colors of coneflowers to add to my garden instead of the RUBY STAR and just plain purples that died out. I bought CHEROKEE SUNSET blackeyed susans instead of Goldstrum which I thought was boring. I bought new honeysuckle vines to replace some that died out. Well, you get the picture. I am not done with everything I want to add or bring back but I made a great big dent in that project. I also want to grow more zinnias as I deffinately love zinnias. The first year I had zinnias in amounst the daylilies in the 2nd terrace of the terraces garden. Coundn't do it years after. I have decided that I can get the look I want and have room for the zinnias by removing the middle grouping of daylilies from the second terrace and leaving the the ones at both ends. Since these are very favorite daylilies I am certainly NOT getting rid of them. Then upstairs in the garden that for year one I called the cosmos garden, second year snapdragon garden (as I planted those annuals to fill in) I want the color back. But I am cetainly not doing to dig up the daylilies and hack the clumping fans back to the two that I started with. So it get a look that works for me, I need to remove a daylily here and there in that bed and then put a spot of color in the empty space I left by moving the daylily. Again these are very favorite daylilies up there. They will not be leaving the garden. I am guessing that by removing and sending away about 50 daylilies I can have the look I want. So I will see what needs to go by evaluating during bloom season.

Oh yes, I do! And your friend is right, daylilies taste so good...like the sweetest lettuce. I find I'm thinking about eating the first blossom when it appears (a ritual now...after having a full bed of daylilies for the past several years.) There are recipes on the internet that has you gather daylily blooms or full buds and stuff them with a nice cream cheese/cream/green onion/herbs mixture and stuffing them gently, then chilling and serving. Yummy-sounding. I would remove the pistil and stamens in the flower before eating, but it's only because I don't want to eat the pollen....although that, to some people, is good for you. They are beautiful and tasty! Pass the daylilies....I've eaten all the colors I have in my garden and they are all good. I think the lighter colored ones have a more delicate taste....just me. How do you pick out Paint Colors?????? What's your color?

I have suggested the following to numerous people and it has worked for them. * Pick no more than 4 colors. These colors can be pulled from any item in your room. A pillow, couch, rug, etc. If you want to be save in what you choose, pick the most prominent color. If you want to be bolder and perhaps break a rule, go with the color that is not so obvious. * After you have the colors that you like, narrow them down one by one. The last one is the one you use. This technique helps keep you from getting overwhelmed with choices. Lots of people don't know that paint has "light intensity". The higher the number the brighter it is and the more it will play with available light. Because you have teak floors and cherry cabinets, you might want to get a paint that has some brown mixed into it. Not a lot. You might not even see it when it's on the wall. But it will be brought out with either natural or unnatural light. SG

There are two official horticulural color charts that I am aware of. The Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart (British) and the Munsel color chart (American). Below is a link comparing the accuracy of one to the other using a daylily as an example....In the catalogs and literature I've read the only one used (infrequently) has been the RHSCC.....I do know that personal descriptions are subjective. At a recent daylily show I purposely wore a pink shirt. The "pink" daylilies were definitely peach not pink compared to the shirt. I find descriptions of "purple" falling into my color range of Claret (maroonish)....The required use of a color chart description will probably never come into commercial play. How can you sell a "blue" rose if you need to state what color number it is off of the chart.

I don't think it's useful to try to be so specific in describing a flower color when it changes considerably over the course of the day, soil conditions it's being grown in and whether it's viewed in direct or in-direct lighting.

The flowery color descriptions give me a grin!

Maryl, is the British Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart a book or those fans of cards that you can get from the RHS for L170? Or are those fans based on the book Horticultural Colour Chart by Robert Francis Wilson? I have never seen the book, but I sure wish I had some accurate way of recording colors.

In the link that you gave, the RHS Colour Chart is compared to the Munsell Book of Color, but that seems hard to come by, too. There are a number of other Munsell books on color still in print. Would any of those include all the colors in the Munsell system? Does anybody know?
