Colors - How do YOU describe your daylilies?

Sometimes (most of the time!) I am at a loss when trying to describe the colors of the blooms on my seedlings. I'm "color challenged, so to speak." Today, I found a chart on Wikipedia, which I think will help me quite bit. What I am curious about is this - is there a set of color samples available commercially? What I'm thinking of is some kind of color wheel or set of color strips that can be carried out to the garden to be used to "match" the color and find the color description?

That's some chart! I know that if I tried to print it out the colors would be a bit different. How about those paint color strips? I would say there is no need to have every shade of the rainbow,but like for reds you can have an orange-red,blue-red,pink-red,or just like fire engine red.Go to a place like Home Depot and see what they have.Best thing is,they're free!

I like the good old box of CRAYOLA Crayons. Now those people know color. I'm serious too. I work at a flower farm and the color descriptions given by the plant people are so off the wall it's unbelievable.
Anyway, that's my thoughts--CRAYOLA--hands down!!

Probably at least 1000 daylilies have come and gone over the years. I've been growing daylilies seriously since the late 90's and have had an AHS Display Garden since around 2000. The garden now has under 700 registered cultivars and I hope to move 50 more out before next summer's regional tour here. No more new ones will come into the garden between now and then if I can help it!(I've seen way too many gardens on Regional and National tours where the people went out and bought a bunch of new plants the year before the tour and they grew mostly little SF and DF on the tours with very sparse blooms showing. People walk right past those and go to look at the clumps!) Almost all plants here have come directly from the hybridizers. I've learned that plants hybridized in my home Region 3 and adjacent regions ( 2 and 4 esp.) do best here. Although I used to heavily buy from the Florida hybridizers, many of those plants seem to be more and more tender anymore as many of them continue to breed evergreen to evergreen over the years. The garden has really evolved from what used to be a mainly full formed bagel garden, mostly Southern hybridized, to a garden featuring a wide variety of all types of plants,a huge collection of UFs and spiders, several miniature beds, some doubles and a share of full forms. As I downsize, what I like best is that the large clumps are spaced better and there is room to interplant more companion plants. Even when the daylilies finish blooming, there will still be a lot of blooms here. Anyone starting out should try to see a lot of local gardens and note what grows well in those gardens. Oh yes, I do! And your friend is right, daylilies taste so good...like the sweetest lettuce. I find I'm thinking about eating the first blossom when it appears (a ritual now...after having a full bed of daylilies for the past several years.) There are recipes on the internet that has you gather daylily blooms or full buds and stuff them with a nice cream cheese/cream/green onion/herbs mixture and stuffing them gently, then chilling and serving. Yummy-sounding. I would remove the pistil and stamens in the flower before eating, but it's only because I don't want to eat the pollen....although that, to some people, is good for you. They are beautiful and tasty! Pass the daylilies....I've eaten all the colors I have in my garden and they are all good. I think the lighter colored ones have a more delicate taste....just me. I have suggested the following to numerous people and it has worked for them. * Pick no more than 4 colors. These colors can be pulled from any item in your room. A pillow, couch, rug, etc. If you want to be save in what you choose, pick the most prominent color. If you want to be bolder and perhaps break a rule, go with the color that is not so obvious. * After you have the colors that you like, narrow them down one by one. The last one is the one you use. This technique helps keep you from getting overwhelmed with choices. Lots of people don't know that paint has "light intensity". The higher the number the brighter it is and the more it will play with available light. Because you have teak floors and cherry cabinets, you might want to get a paint that has some brown mixed into it. Not a lot. You might not even see it when it's on the wall. But it will be brought out with either natural or unnatural light. SG

We keep the seedlings in the same bed for three years (unless there is something that absolutely wows us--it might get moved early). Then we select the ones we want to further observe. They will stay in that bed until we select them for introduction or composting. Some might stay in that bed for several years. There are always some with flowers we like, but bud count is that is too low. Those tend to stay around either for a bridge plant or the hope that they might start throwing better scapes. We don't keep any stats on how many we throw away as opposed to our introductions, but suffice it to say, that not many make the cut. We have registered 3 but have bloomed over 6000 seedlings. Of course, it all depends on what you want to do with your hybrids. If you want to market them, your criteria might be more strict. If you just want to name them and give them to friends and family, you don't have so picky. At any rate, whether you register them or not, growing them is a lot of fun. Nancy

There are two official horticulural color charts that I am aware of. The Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart (British) and the Munsel color chart (American). Below is a link comparing the accuracy of one to the other using a daylily as an example....In the catalogs and literature I've read the only one used (infrequently) has been the RHSCC.....I do know that personal descriptions are subjective. At a recent daylily show I purposely wore a pink shirt. The "pink" daylilies were definitely peach not pink compared to the shirt. I find descriptions of "purple" falling into my color range of Claret (maroonish)....The required use of a color chart description will probably never come into commercial play. How can you sell a "blue" rose if you need to state what color number it is off of the chart.

I don't think it's useful to try to be so specific in describing a flower color when it changes considerably over the course of the day, soil conditions it's being grown in and whether it's viewed in direct or in-direct lighting.

The flowery color descriptions give me a grin!

Maryl, is the British Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart a book or those fans of cards that you can get from the RHS for L170? Or are those fans based on the book Horticultural Colour Chart by Robert Francis Wilson? I have never seen the book, but I sure wish I had some accurate way of recording colors.

In the link that you gave, the RHS Colour Chart is compared to the Munsell Book of Color, but that seems hard to come by, too. There are a number of other Munsell books on color still in print. Would any of those include all the colors in the Munsell system? Does anybody know?
