I don't think I have done anything too crazy yet but give me time, I'm sure I will before the gardening season is over. Maybe having too many new plants and not enough space to plant them might qualify, will I ever learn :).

This year, not much yet... The best I can come up with this year is that I lugged wintersown tomato seedlings in and out of the house every evening and morning for 2 months. It was worth it, though.

Last year was a little more creative... I discovered heavy duty fishing line. I strung it up and down the fence for the scarlet runner beans, and tied some around the post of the front porch for the clematis to hang on. By end of June, the clematis gets almost to the top of the pillar.

Ok, the craziest thing I did this spring relates to yours! After hearing about the freeze warning I high-tailed it outside and loaded in several large flats of veggies, herbs, and annuals into the shed. Even lugged in a few big terra cotta with tenders in them and got out an old car cover to throw over the bean tepee (kind of looked like a rocket taking off- could only imagine what the neighbors made of that, LOL!). There were a few things I couldn't get inside, but I let them stay out since they were not too important to me. Well, I go to all that work and guess what happens? NO FREEZE! The few things I left out were perfectly perky and doing fine the next morning. Second night of possible low temps- same thing. Third day was nice and I was annoyed to have been fooled. So I brought most everything back out.

Should have known better!! The next morning the tulips were tipsy with frost and one planting of beans had been killed! Thankfully nothing else was damaged (maybe cuz' they were under some overhanging tree branches).

It was kind of like mother nature telling me This could have happened to ALL of your delicate platns. Next time you will heed my warning, won't you?

What haven't I done? Carried several tons of stone, rock by rock. Decided to give winter sowing a try in March and sowed over 100 containers--for my 1/10th of an acre lot. Started dozens and dozens of vines indoors and started taking them out for hardening off "field trips" on a daily basis. Where exactly did I expect to put all of these MGs, moonflowers, hyacinth beans, thunbergia, cardinal climber...I'm sure I'm forgetting some!

Just today I carried a big iron swing and swing stand by myself. I made the beginnings of yet another garden room while my potager is still not entirely finished (darn fence guy stringing me along).

What can I say? I've got the gardening bug in a big way.

A month or so ago, when it first got warm enough to garden in earnest, I took a day off work to "catch" up...I spent all day outside..working like a dog...at dark I decided I had to quit...stopped in our detached garage and grabbed my dinner from the freezer..a frozen dinner...on my way to the house, in the dark, I kept finding things to do..more than an hour later...looooooooooooong into the dark. I finally was forced to quit, I just couldnt see anymore...I couldnt find where I left my dinner :) Took another half hour of retracing my steps to find where I left in the garden to thaw.. :)

Someone gave me some tall garden phlox a couple of days ago that was in a weedy old bed. I had to strip it down to single stalks practically to get it weed-free. Then I had to plant it, mostly stalk by stalk, and try to get it to stand up straight. It was marginally successful. :)

And I am also a member of the inch-mover club.

The craziest thing I've done so far this year is to continue with last year's plan to enlarge the garden and redo all the old perennial beds. Have to keep reminding myself that "whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger". I should be *really* strong by the end of the summer! ;-D Yesterday I was out sifting gravel (wet gravel is really, really heavy) so I could add coarse sand for drainage for my 21 new lavender plants. Got them planted tho and they had *better* survive! Today I was really glad it was too wet to plant more than a few things. Of course I'll probably buy more plants tomorrow as there are a few sales. That may be the craziest thing I've done this year. I think I can find space in the bed I haven't redone yet.

I may have outdone myself last night. For the second night in a row, I headed out at around 11 pm in my pjs and chopsticks for a slug hunt. Now the "special" thing about last night is that my town has this big monthly event called "First Friday" (first Friday of every month) that always draws a crowd. All of the businesses are open late, live music...you get the idea. As I've said before, I live in the historic and cultural district of town. So, there I was out front on the sidewalk in my pjs with those chopsticks, shining the flashlight with complete disregard for the few passersby who must have thought I was completely losing it. LOL.

Just yesterday we decided to limb up the huge cedar tree in the back. There were a number of dead limbs, but also a number that were just crowding out the space to much. I was so smitten with the curves of some of the branches we removed, that we ended up completely stripping all of the growth and side twigs from them,(hours of snipping and clipping) and now have laying in the yard about twenty 8-20 foot, curving cedar "poles" 2-4 " diameter. I just couldnt saw them up and put them in the wood pile they are to beautiful, but I still dont know what I am going to do with them! Maybe a funky fence or a series of trellis?. Any suggestions?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does crazy things in the garden :)

OK, true confession: DH and I pet bumblebees. In the evening, the bumblebees cling to the stems of the lavender and sleep out under the stars. When we see them sleeping, we very gently touch them on the back. They just rustle their wings a little bit and go back to sleep.

I think Lisa wins the prize for craziest so far, tho!

The craziest or i guess i should say Dumbest thing i did this year was go out in the front garden one kinda cool and overcast day.I planted some new flowers,moved things around etc.I had a sweat shirt on when i started,but got too hot and took it off.

Never gave the weather another thought!! Don't know if you all remember i went through chemo at the end of 08 and beginning of 09.My hair has grown back,however not as thick as it used to be.Thought nothing of it.Continued with those gardens,and moved over to the side succulent garden,by that time the sun was in and out,felt nothing,that is until i came in and got in the shower.When i washed my hair my scalp hurt pretty bad,so when i got out,i took my hand mirrow and looked at the back of my head~~~~~~~~~~Yup had a pretty bad sunburn,right thru my hair.Won't make that mistake again!!

Some may think this is crazy but I have a large double decker fountain in my front yard. I have not had much luck keeping it clean and running well. This year I am using the smaller, top level as a birdbath. The larger, lower level has been planted with everbearing strawberry plants - for the birds to snack on.

I think the craziest thing I've done in the garden this year was try to garden at all. I keep killing things except weeds that keep coming back.

A friend and I went to a greenhouse in early April and bought geraniums and other annuals thinking we got the best early. Well, due to weather and what-not we had to keep the flats inside the house and nurse them to keep them alive until we could plant outdoors. Today I finally potted up the geraniums!

Never again will I buy so early.

Craziest thing I have done this year - uuuummmmmm - the same as every year - WSowed 100's of containers of perennials and annuals and then complain because I have no place to put them all - but I will do it again next year :D ......
