I got three little thujas at my local garden center; the owner just said that they are thujas,but looking on Internet I am a bit bewildered by the many varieties of thujas that there are! What is the most common type, please? because I figure that ,considering the nature of the store from which I purchased mine (NOT a specialty-type place AT ALL),the ones I have are most probably your basic "Acme" brand arborvitae...for example, is there a generic "species" thuja? I'm getting a cedrus deodara and a cedrus libani from an on-line mail-order nursery,and am assuming that the plants I'll be getting are just the simple, species"brand" of these trees,since they are not named on the site,so I'm basing my placement decisions for these on info from Internet, but am a bit perplexed about these arborvitaes...how big do they get? how fast do they grow? etc...any info would be much appreciated; as you can see, I'm decidedly a beginner when it comes to this stuff. Very regionally dependant!

In North America, a Thuja purchased in across Canada, the mid-west US, and the eastern US is almost certainly derived from Thuja occidentalis.

Along the west coast (Canada & US)...Thuja plicata

In the southeast & southern states, probably the Thuja 'Green Giant' or similar (Thuja standishii x plicata).

In Europe, I expect Thuja plicata or occidentalis would be the two most likely species (rather than the Asian Thuja). Thuja occidentalis is more versatile (big cultivar selection) so I expect that's the more 'common' one.

By far the dominant one here is T. occidentalis 'Smaragd', from Denmark. It is one of the most prevalent nursery items.

i told you they wont grow in my 5.. so no matter what 5 you might be.. its still going to be problematic .. unless you can squeak a micro 6 in some corner of the yard .... i would try to avoid winter sun.. and all winter wind ... and.. since you asked... the are not shrubs .... in any sense of the word.. common mistake... they are conifers.. because they have cones.. though very weird ones .. all conifers are also trees ... trees/shrubs and conifers are all planted the same ... never fertilized.. and mostly free range after 2 years.. once established ... the biggest difference .. in a non scientific sense.. is that pruning or trimming rules vary greatly between all 3 ... you would never REJUVENATE PRUNE a tree or conifer. the way you would prune a shrub ... google the term to see.. and think lilac.. spirea.. weigelia ... privet .... etc ... flowering shrubs .... and you can not prune a confer as freely as a tree ... if you were to trim all the buds off a pine e.g. .... it is dead [99% of the time] ... whereas a tree.. would be able to trigger dormant buds[like that stump in the yard that just wont die].. and still live .... [though of course... you wouldnt top a tree like that anyway ...] so you would never shear a pine .... like say a privet... unless you did it a the perfect time to allow new buds to develop .... or the conifer would die ... now... this is what i call the grade school level explanation ... and is not meant in any manner to be a scientific thesis on the the differences.. since most peeps.. dont need that .. its all i ever learned.. and look where i am today ... rotflmbo ..... man its gotta be hot outside for me to type all that.. rather than be outside.. lol ... all that said.. arbs would be much more forgiving to shearing.. on some level.. as compared to pines, etc .... but you would be better off hand pruning to reduce growth ... selective reduction lets call it ... ken

your title says: Most reliably Yellowest ... please do be aware.. that most yellow conifers migrate through the colors spectrum throughout the years ... they need the green to produce chlorophyll and prosper ... the less they go to green .... the slower, or less vigorous they tend to be ... ergo ... you are not going to find a year around yellow conifer... for the most part ... there will be trade offs... and i think you should start with first deciding WHEN you want it to be yellow... e.g. ... the chief jo above is brilliant yellow ALL WINTER .... and then somewhat lime colored to green in summer ... perhaps you want a summer yellow and dont really care about winter ... ken

Those sure look similar to what I germinated from known Thuja seed. There can be a difference (or two) between different species/cultivars, of course, but if there is no other similar type plant nearby (that would drop seed), then I would say congrats to your brood :-) If you do not want them, just pull 'em up. Or repot some to give to friends or whatever - they are fairly tough plants, IME, as long as you give 'em a bit of attention initially. You can always take a seedling and kinda smush it between your fingers and see if it smells 'cedary' or such, and do the same with a bit of the big plant and compare the two. There is usually a scent to them and scent would make another 'positive' for ID of Thuja, IMHO. It can take some time before the typical broader/flatter 'leaves' show (other than the juvenile spiky-like needles), so it makes it difficult to differentiate between Thuja, Pinus, Cupressus, etc when juvenile-looking seedlings are all that are present. It took me almost three years to ID a volunteer that came up from some stuff I once received from Oregon. Turned out it was probably Douglas Fir, but looked like every conifer ever discovered as the seasons went by - very frustrating, LOL. A buddy sent me tons of Thuja plicata seed he gathered and a stray fir seed came along and really messed with my mind a while!

Planting GREEN GIANT ARBORVITAE near old maple roots / spacing

I am removing these roots. Almost every resource says to just make sure to plant a few feet away, and many testimonies say their new tree is doing fine years later, but even 8ft away I am hitting like 3x3 fresh lumber I can make furniture with lol. Ultimately I think this is a unique scenario because I checked youtube vids like below and although some of those trunks are much smaller than the Silver Maple, the ratio of roots-to-trunk size seems way different as if this Silver Maple made clusters of much thicker and longer roots for its size - I think it's because the sandy/clay grading soil when they built the development makes things root shallow in this location. This is how a lot of developments are built, they use cheap sandy/clay stuff for the main grading and then only about 18" of good soil on top for the grass and trees, and also I've heard this whole side of town was basically a swap or something once upon a time, google maps even shows a blue line (river) along this fence line but there's never been a river, maybe an underground spring or something hence the map's river line starts and ends with no body of water and I've replaced fence posts here when it hasn't rained and basically hit an underground river (the wood underground was solid because no oxygen is why fence posts usually rot at the base only). I removed the stumps and roots of a row of blue point junipers that were chopped down like 7 years prior and they were still solid. If the roots look like the below vids, then yes go ahead and plant close and don't even worry about that little amount of roots in fact yes it'll just add organic matter I'd prefer to leave some roots if it's sandy/clay which is what I'm doing adding small roots back into the mix and mixing the sandy sub soil with the dark rich compost topsoil. Green giants are well-rooted and unlikley to tip over from windthrow, and they might root deeper into the sandy/clay stuff just below the old maple roots, but bottom line is there's too much big roots in the way that I know it'll be better without them, I can't even dig a 1ft wide hole for a new tree without hitting something decent. Some trees cost too much to risk it IMHO at least get some of the old roots out, setting up irrigation, transporting the trees, fertilizing etc better to not risk it if the conditions and old roots are like this. Another thing is if a previous tree/roots had disease, it could enter the new tree, but as long as there's not a ton of old root mass, then maybe it's not a big deal and the soil microbes will correct it, but just wanted to note that about planting near an old stump. And well, you can't just make quick work of roots with a chainsaw because it'll dull in 5 seconds and you'll spend more time sharpening than cutting (although I might sacrifice a chain for this and test my dremel chainsaw bits for once because usually I just hand file), but it's not too too bad removing roots. It rained hard and turned my project into a pool that I bucket'd mostly out and then filled the finished areas back with soil and it was like working on quicksand but it's getting there and the farther away from the stump the easier it becomes. Sawsall pruning blades dull really fast too and I resharpen them on a bench grinder but it's still takes a while. I've been picking at them with an axe, splitting wedges etc, rain-soaked compost topsoil makes it a lot heavier and everything slippery, been going at it with a jack hammer with a sharpened chisel bit does decently. This Silver Maple stump was like 3ft wide at the base. I just removed a different maple's stump and roots from the sidewalk grass strip area to plant new sweetbay magnolia and that was about a 1ft maple stump but the ratio of those roots to the large silver maple doesn't correlate, I was able to rather easily remove the whole stump and what seems like the only main roots it put out due to being confined between the sidewalk and street compared to the large Silver Maple really put tons of big roots out. sorry so long, Another things though is Green Giants are an extremely QUICK growing tree so I would still prefer not to have even medium sized roots near them. Tree services should offer the option to grind the roots too if they're this big. Yup. Thuja occidentalis was the first N. American plant species taken back to Europe for horticultural purposes. This was hundreds of years ago. As such, and given this species genetic plasticity, there have been a great many selections/introductions over that timespan. I think bb's got it right that "Emerald Green", aka Smaragd" has become preeminent in the marketplace.

This is an alright, all-around plant for many uses. I don't care for it however due to its having multiple leaders. It is not the worst offender in that sense, but it can and occasionally does split open under heavy snow or ice load. If one must have a cultivar, I much prefer "Hetz Wintergreen" which is almost always single-leadered.

I'm a huge fan of the native stands of T. occidentalis, such as can be found where I live and all around the Great Lakes region. Contrary to what many seem to think, this tree is usually single-leadered also. They handle enormous snow loads in stride. I've seen young and even not so young plants in my woods bent to the ground, only to spring back to vertical perfection once the snow melts or is blown off.

What height/width/etc. are you after? We can guide you in based on those criteria.

Emerald, Emerald Green etc. are translations of the cultivar name into English - the cultivar is always 'Smaragd', regardless of what language is being spoken.

Hmm, thanks, people. So, according to an Italian on-line nursery that does offer Smaragd,I can expect my plants to grow quickly to 5-6 meters in height, and 1-2 meters wide. Now I think I'll lookaround Internet to see if any italian nurseries offer a simple species thuja, just in case. If not, I'll work on the assumption that the ones I have are indeed Smaragd...cheers, bart

O dear! the same Italian site also offers thuja Plicata Atrovirens,which in contrast can grow up to 12-15 meters high and 4-6 wide! Looking at pictures on Internet, I can't really tell much difference between leaves of the two types, either. Thing is , I was thinking to group them with a cypress sempervirens, having the cypress in the midst of shorter, fatter thujas,but I'd only get the desired effect if these ones I have are indeed Smaragds. Any idea how to tell the two apart?

I've always considered the foliage on T. plicata a bit more coarse, and a bit larger overall. Indeed, some taxonomists consider these two species to be one and the same, merely geographic variants of each other. I'm not saying that, just reporting something I've read.

I strongly doubt you'll find straight species Thujas of any species. I do actually specify straight species T. occidentalis for some of the native restoration work we do, but finding them on the market is a challenge, let alone in Italy.

I'm going to have to go on-line and look at pictures some more. You are being very helpful however. By now I feel I've narrowed down the possibilities to just the two: the tall growing T.plicata and the smaller Smaragd. Of the three baby shrubs I have, though, I observe that one has a marked pointy cypress-type shape,whereas the other two are more oval/rounded (not ball-shaped at all though). The quest goes on! bart

I have seen beautiful tall Thuja plicata in Washington state. I have no idea what the small trees look like, they were probably all around me but I wasn't paying attention. Maybe the species Thuja aren't available but are there any cultivars that get that tall, bare trunk look at a relatively young age?

Any Eastern grown material looking coarser than T. occidentalis I would expect to not actually be T. plicata. The 'Green Giant' hybrid for instance.

Look at 'Hetz' or 'Hetz Wintergreen'-same plant IK believe. It might be the one for you. It does tend to be single-trunked, which I believe to be a huge advantage, leastways where it snows or ice storms occur.
