Top 3 plants in 2007

My garden looks lousy. Lots of damage from the freeze. Heliconias really suffered and some are quite brown. Lots of stuff defoliated, brown, and messy with all the wind. Really sad looking all over. However, the good news is that we've had a couple of good rains. Makes me hopeful for spring. Gotta keep looking forward and dreaming of what could be next year.

Thought we could all name our favorite three plants in 2007 to just give each other ideas and perhaps widen our wish lists! Please say why they are your favorites and how did they do during the cold spell.

Mine are:

Justicia golden flame. Just planted about 6 months ago. In full sun! Did not balk at our brutal, dry, hot summer. Looks really good after the cold weather. Not blooming now, but foliage looks nice when not in bloom. You know, I am partial to orange, so that may be part of why this is one of my favorites.

Euphorbia cotinifolia. Also planted in summer and thrived in our brutal weather. Great red/burgundy color. They are almost bare now, but I think they will be back. I found them at HD, and hope to find more this year to tuck in here and there for easy color. You know how I like foliage.

Dioon spinulosum. I've had these for years. Every year they are some of my favorites. Almost always look great with no care, every season. Something about the graceful shape I like.

Alright, what are your top 3? I want to dream of spring!!!

HM...this is a hard question....I'm not that familiar with most of my plants as yet...

I have what HD called ground orchids.....they have bloomed all year even now one of them has a bloom...they have never had any pest....their leaves always look good year round....and mine aren't the normal purple ones I see alot..they have a few colors in them.

Another one I love is the 4 o'clocks....they just smell so good....in the summer they look great, right now they aren't as full but the things still bloom every night....and when the wind blows just right you can smell them on the air.

Also my brugs.....when in bloom they are just gorgeous to look at...and they also smell really good. Even now the leaves look nice ...the only problem is something loves to eat them....so I prune them alot which just makes them look fuller

My favorite 3:

Whitfieldia Longifolia - white candles - almost always in bloom, glossy green foliage and a wonderful shade plant. Just a little bloom damage from the recent cold.

Jatropha Integrima - My very favorite plant - always in bloom, butterflies love it and can be trained as a tree or pruned as a bush.

Mussaendas - Love these plants. Have the salmon and white with the huge bracts. They are nothing but sticks now, but can't be beat for summer/fall color.

Finally cranked up the truck and ventured out onto the I-5 for my monthly shopping "spree" to the feed and fertilizer store. Those hens do a fine job of egg laying. Need to keep them happy with their daily ration of layer pellets. I'm sure we would have egg-withdrawal if I had to buy eggs from the grocery store. Their fertilizer comes in handy to heat up compost piles too. Great addition to this kind of gardening. I tried to find the corn gluten that Ken recommended for his asparagus beds. The fert store had lots and lots of chemicals in lots and lots of bags, but only a few things like alfalfa meal, cotton seed meal, bone meal, etc. I do buy blood meal and organic rock potassium (langbenite)too. Unfortunately, no corn gluten there, so wound up with cotton seed meal (a 5-2-1 blend - good nitro), and fed my asparagus bed. The Jerseys have begun to come on nicely, though still a lot of spindly "others" as well. With all of my recent attention, it should respond nicely - perhaps next year. With compost mixed with chicken manure, and the cottonseed meal - I am in hopes that it will perk up and produce a bit better. They really want a lot of cash for "organic fertilizers" in these parts. Most folks just opt for that other kind, but they grow mainly ornamentals in their well-manicured yards. Hi Bejay! I'd be happy to share the recipe. I won't guarantee that it's healthy, but it's definitely not sweet. You could tweak it to make it less salty and fatty, but it wouldn't be quite as good. I'm using zucchini in the vernacular, to describe all summer squashes. When I asked Granny if she had a measurement for the crumbs and oil, she basically said "as many as you want". I usually use about a cup of crumbs. Butter is a good substitute for oil, since it's yummy. Also, I pretty much always double this recipe. Any can of cream of whatever soup will work. Well, maybe not cream of shrimp... You can also steam the veggies if you don't want to boil them - the point is that they should be pretty soft so they make a yummy creamy mixture with the soup and sour cream. I'm pretty sure this recipe originated back when folks thought it was a good idea to boil veggies to death. Perhaps it was developed to best deal with the baseball bat zucchini that sneaks by us in the patch! If you decide to use THAT zucchini, peel it first - I've tried this with tough zucchini and the skin just doesn't get soft enough even with the boiling. Little summer squashes won't need as much precooking. Maybe your shredded zucchini won't need much of a boil at all - it should work here anyway, it's pretty free form. Enough babble - here's the recipe: Zucchini Casserole 6 cups sliced zucchini 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped carrots 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup 1 cup sour cream Bread Crumbs Salad Oil Black pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 2 quart casserole dish. In a large saucepan boil zucchini, carrots, and onions 10 minutes (or until tender). Drain well In a small bowl, mix together bread crumbs and salad oil until crumbs are barely moistened. Spread half of the crumbs in the casserole dish. Mix vegetables, soup, and sour cream together. Add pepper if desired. Spread in casserole dish. Cover top of casserole with remaining crumbs. Bake for 20-30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is golden brown.

Oh no, I can't pick, I am so fickle, this month it's bromeliads and who knows what next month will be. But I love trees. And any plant with red flowers. lol I guess thats 3. ;o)

NYtrinigemini, those are gorgeous ground orchids! I see why they are your favorites. I have never seen any quite that color combination, and it seems the flowers are a bit larger than usual also. Unfortunately, I've never had luck with any of those. Those make me want to try again.

Ginny, I have been wanting to try the white candles. They are on my wish list this year, definitely. The spot I have is pretty dense shade, though. Don't know how much they would bloom there. Yes, jatrophas are always one of my favorites also. What grateful plants. I only started with mussaendas this year, but I really enjoyed them.

This is hard! But it's a great question.

I think my red shrimp plant - Justicia brandegeana
and the pretty mimosa pink powderpuff - Calliandra (something? haematocephala?)
and maybe the Lady Margaret passion vine. Or the Angel Wing begonia collection.

But there are some tried and true garden buddies that I still love. Like porterweed and Black & Blue salvia and firespike, bulbine, firebush, blackberry lily, Flame grapefruit, etc, etc, etc.

The top of my Need It list is a Mussaenda. I don't even care which color. I'll be adding one this spring I think. I wasn't sure it would do well in my area but found a white beauty in a neighbor's yard.

Great post!

Also a hard choice, considering that 2007 was the most plant-filled year to date for me. Since I am only a couple of years into populating a previously blank landscape, my top three from 2007 are all structural plants: shrubs that I am training into small trees.

#1 Brunfelsia pauciflora (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow)
Long sought-after specimen for the front yard, it is partially shaded by a large Laurel Oak. I like this one because it is unique, cold-hardy, and beautiful.

#2 Vitex negundo (Chaste-tree)
Another front yard specimen, this tough little tree is located in the sunniest, driest, sandiest part of the property. It shows off with hardly any care. The lavender blooms are fragrant and the deciduous foliage is interesting to my eye.

#3 Camellia sasanqua (var. "Star Above Star")
It's still small, but my camellia is plugging along nicely in its partially shaded spot in my backyard. It's a slow grower, but will be an astonishingly wonderful small tree in, oh... 20 years or so.

Anna - My 'white candles' is planted in very heavy shade and blooms very well. I can't imagine what it might do if it had a little sun. They are easy to root and I would be glad to root you one if interested.

My three favorites for this past year are:

perennial morning glory
It blooms nonstop (still blooming now)

white powderpuff

swamp mallow 'red flyer'
it goes dormant over the winter months, but that is ok, it gives me some sense of seasons just like my crape myrtles

Kate, I want to try the red shrimp plant this year also. How much sun is yours in? What happened to it with the cold? Is your pink powderpuff really pink or is it red?

Musicman, I was curious about your choices. I think of brunsfelsia as a definite zone 10, but camellias as zone 9 or less. I keep thinking about camellias since Olya mentioned them, but haven't done anything about it.

Evelyn, your photos are stunning! That morning glory has such a deep color. I've never really seen that white powderpuff. Very pretty. The swamp mallow, exquisite.

I do try and walk a thin line in terms of zones in my garden. It seems like half of my plants are pushing their southern limits, while the other half is pushing their northern limits. Such is life in west-central Florida (north Tampa).

The Brunfelsia is hardy here. Any further north and it would be suffering. The Camellia does just fine here, too. There are lots of them in my neighborhood (part of the inspiration for trying it). Now I'm not sure how they would do further south. I think they do need a little touch of coldness. But worth a try!

Time is almost moving too fast. It'll be summer before too long...

My most favorite one is my Louie Phillipe, the Cracker Rose that I planted when we first moved out here. I sat at my table the first of this year and counted 40+ cherry red, fragrant blooms out the window. It is thornless and has reached nine feet in height. The only flaw is that the blooms shatter very quickly if you cut them.

One year I stopped counting after the fifteenth flush.

Next is Madame Alfred Carriere, a blush white semi thornless climber that was a twig ten months ago. Within two weeks of planting her, she shot up a basal cane that is now as thick as a broomstick. The lovely intensely fragrant flowers hang down from above. Many blooms so far and it will even get better as she matures.

Lastly, I pick Madame Berard, a short climber that is showing great promise. She is just a little twig that arrived late last September and she has already put out four lovely, fragrant blooms.

Just three plants - that is tough to choose!

Camelias
First year blooming - I planted them in 2006

I discovered tropical water lilies, since we finished our pond in 2007...Beautiful and fragrant

Aster carolinianus
Bloomed first time for me...wow, what a pretty plant. Butterfles and bees were all over it

Honorable mention
Tomatoes in kitty litter containers - I have way too many cat litter containers, and this is "match in heaven" : happy tomatoes and containers at work

Allamanda 'Cherries Jubilee' - my neighbor gave me a piece, and it has bloomed summer 2007...Frost we had was brutal to it - I hope it makes it!

all the salvias I discovered thanks to this Forum (especially the pink one I got from the swap)

and lots OGRs I acquired

I can't show you anything in my yard right now, because after six months of neglect, there is nothing blooming except a few weeds, and everything is either dead or leggy and ugly. BUT, before I had to stop working, my number one find of the year was (of course!) Rosy Dawn and all their wonderful coleus! Pinning it down to a few faves, I would have to say Sedona, Apocalypse and Saturn. After the coleus, I'm still in love with my starburst clerodendrum which came through the freeze looking pretty good. It has grown about 3 feet taller than when I planted it 8 months ago, and much wider, and the foliage looks fantastic. I think I finally see a few buds on it, so I'm looking forward to seeing it bloom for me for the first time. And number 3 might have to be my African blue basil. Such a bee magnet, so fragrant, and such a tough little plant. Very pretty and cottagey, too. Maybe it would tie with my old-favorite, rudbeckia triloba, which gave me mounds of yellow "daisies" once again.

Holding it to three things is really hard, but I need to hang on to the memories of what my garden looked like last spring and summer so I can get it that way again. Thanks for inspiring me.

Evelyn, I have never seen a swamp mallow that big in my whole life! It's stunning! And I have a small piece of perennial morning glory on my fence out front...I hope and pray it eventually looks like YOURS! Fantastic!

Olya, where did you get that great aster? I'd love one just like it.

Marcia, I found it growing by the road...It is a once bloomer, so the rest of the year it is hard to spot. Nice plant, lots of new shoots this year. If you want, I can put one in a pot for you, and whenever you in Tampa, or someone you know is, you can pick it up :) Big plant when in bloom - good 3.5-4 feet worth of flowers :)

Thonotorose, I think my cracker rose could probably use more sun than it gets. I've never had more than 3-4 blooms at once, and it is rather tall and gangly. I still love it, though. Maybe I'll try to find a sunnier spot. The white rose is lovely. Had never heard of that one.

Olya, is that camellia the sansaqua one? I love the pink blush on the outside edges. Very delicate. Anyone further south than Tampa growing Camellias?

Marcia, my yard is in similar shape. I think the wind did as much damage as the cold. Don't worry, spring is just around the corner. We'll live vicariously through others' photos!

Thanks to the enablers on the FLorida Forum and I mean that in the NICEST way possible, I'm now interested in Amaryllis thanks to Cindee, Hoyas thanks to Jan and I already had my addiction to orchids and African violets. Others have spurred me on to grow more fruit and tomatoes.

Olya, I would love one like it, if you ever spot another. I will make a special trip, if you do. And I'll find something to bring you by then, I'm sure. My yard is NOT going to stay like it is now forever, hopefully! As Evelyn knows, I have PLANS! With a capital P!

Anna, this camellia is indeed camellia sasanqua, Star Above Star. I also planted a few japonicas (Professor C.S. Sargent , a few others), as well as a few more sasanquas. Now, it is total of 7 camellias in the garden :) Only three bloomed so far, and the rest are young

Marcia, I will plant seedlings for you in the next few days. After the plant is done flowering, usually lots of seedlings pop up at its base :)
I will plant them up, and after the plants are established and I know they will live, they are ready for pick up - should be soon :)

The aster is also known as climbing aster and is a butterfly magnet when in bloom. I used to grow it, but don't have it now. ;o( I saw it growing wild in bloom on the banks of a river and the butterflies were all over it. It was stunning, I just wish it bloomed for a longer period of time.

Really tough question lol. I also am very fickle lol. If something grows well it tends to be my favorite until it tries to eat the house
Of those I've had for many years a Calliandra red form
that has been dwarfed to under 3 feet. Flowers in waves about one sixth normal size lol growing in sphag in a drip pan underplanted with white oxalis. 3 species of orchid in the branches as well as some snow white spanish moss.
Madagascar lace plants when they don't croak!! Got one through the third dormancy this year!!!! Now if I get some flowers.
A giant form of Nepenthes. Looks like a creature from another world and as a bonus it eats mosquitoes but not all of them lol
An apple green Catt orchid that fades through chartreuse to bright yellow.

It is really hard to choose just three plants, but here it goes.

Sweet almond verbana/aloysia virgata- super easy plant. Always blooming, smells great!

Mystic spires salvia- This salvia has has been in bloom longer than any of my other salvias. I love salvias!

Tibouchina urvilleana- This plant stays in bloom almost year round, and has been very easy to grow for me.

Now I am going to cheat and add another plant. Coleus!
No particular one.
I have really enjoyed having coleus in my garden the last few years. They come in so many great colors and are easy to propagate and share.

This is a great thread, but 3 plants are almost impossible. I named my 3 earlier, but everyone has wonderful plants that I have or really want. Today I was pruning back a vine and it is really my favorite:

Telsoma Cordata - constant very fragrant small yellow clustered blooms. Everyone should have this vine!!

That's it. Really upsetting. It seems everyone can grow mystic spires salvia but me. As a matter of fact, I've also killed many black and blue salvia. Don't know what gives. Seems they are easy plants for everyone else. My butterfly garden is devoid of salvias cuz I kill them all. Don't know how. Ariel, I'd love to see a photo of your lovely aloysia virgata.

Ginny, please show us your telosma cordata. The pics I saw on the internet were intriguing.

Holy cats, all these make me want to go raid a few local nurseries...I also got a YTT after wanting one for a while, and it had a hard time after the freeze, but it looks healthy now [just no blooms]. The pictures posted are stunning...where do you find a perennial morning glory? I did discover my shrimp plant makes a nice cutting flower, and I want to grow more and more cutting flowers so I always have some on the table...

Top 3 for the moment, anyway--

1. Dwarf mulberry bush, with these tiny berries that have an impossible amount of sweet juice

2. Purple-and-orange johnny-jump-ups that brightened a dull corner and are spreading quite a bit-- they are just so happy

3. Blue ginger, which I got at the extension plant sale with a huge blue bloom on it!

Here is a photo of my Aloysia virgata. I have trained mine as a small tree. It can easily be kept smaller, it takes pruning very well.

I will try and root some aloysia and some mystic spires for you. Though it might take a little while.
For those who want to buy them- I got the aloysia from Crowly's and the mystic spires from Lowes.

Is your perennial morning glory a prolific seeder? Is it easy to keep in control? I have always loved the beauty of morning glories but have never had them in my garden for fear of them getting out of control.
Your picture is so pretty I just might have to try them.

On a different note- Does anyone have any blackberry lily seeds they can share with me. I lost all mine this past summer and I really miss them in my garden.

Ariel, the perennial morning glory does not seed out. I have it now 9 months with non-stop blooms.
For me it is easy to control, it stays on top of the pergola. If you let it grow 'wild' at the bank of your lake it may take over, since it does root very easy.

If it works out that we meet at a swap I will certainly root a cutting for you.

Anna and Olya - Here is my only pic of the telsoma cordata that I can find. It's on the arbor to the right. You can't really see the blooms unless you are standing under the arbor, but the fragrance is so nice - not overpowering, but you know it's there.

Olya, I have rooted this before and will be glad to root one for you when it starts growing again. I had to cut it down to move the arbor when the tree trimmers were here last month to prune my oaks. It's already starting to put out new growth, so it shouldn't be long. White candles are easy and will be glad to root some of those. They are in the picture to the right side in full shade.

Was just digging through my pix as I got a Bonsai convert down in Hollywood who is also using the compressed sphag. as a media.lol Couldn't find the really good pix of it and it looka a bit sad since the cold spell. It got its first root pruning in 1985 and is now a true dwarf. Leaves are a half inch and flowers consistantly at 1 inch now.
I started adding epiphytes about 4 years ago.. It's not really a Bonsai because the media is incorrect and it's a secondary planting..
I can't get pix of the Lace plant as it's a submerged aquatic located in the large tank. It's the only vascular plant in the world that has no tissue in the leaves . lol
Just a series of veins .Looks like window screen lol.
It flowered for me two years ago and produced viable seed
but seedlings couldn't hack the summer. It emerged from dormancy at the beginning of Dec but has already produced leaves over two feet. Unfortuneately my tank is only 28 inches deep and it's being over run with some Amazon swords and Crptocorynes.
I'm so proud that this is it's third dormancy break!! I've killed so many of these I was fearing arrest by the WWF lol. I wish you could see it one of the strangest looking plants in the world. gary

OMG, how could I have forgot sweet almond verbeana? I love that plant and it's smell. I have one now I am going to train as a tree. But am getting another one to leave as a bush. And it flowers all the time. Maybe not all, but lots!

Ginny, I so love to see photos of your garden. I wish you would show us more. Your vine looks lovely on the arbor, although I cannot see the blooms. I can certainly see the blooms on the white candles, though. Yes, I definitely want to look for that one this year. BTW, is that a medinella in front of it?

Gary, your lace plant sounds fascinating, but way too much trouble for me. I'm into easy. Will have to look it up to learn about it though.

Hi. I am new here. I am in SW Orlando. I love this forum - It makes you wish you had a bigger yard to put more gardens in.

My favorite flower last year was my passion flower that I got from a vacant lot a couple years ago. I thought it had died and then last year it came up all over the place. I trained it up a pine tree and although it didn't get alot of flowers, the ones it got were so amazing.
And butterflies - well the fruitilary butterflies (probably spelling that wrong) were everywhere. I let their caterpillers eat the vine and I thought it would come back up but it doesn't look like it. Fortunately plants are coming up in the lawn and I have dug a couple up and am trying to start them again by my pine.

Another favorite is African Iris because you can't kill it. It will grow anywhere although in deep shade it doesn't bloom much.

I got a butterfly weed from Home Depot last year and it hasn't stopped blooming since it got it, even with the cold snap we had so I guess that is my 3rd choice.
