Does anybody have a Christmas tree farm?
Comments (6)Hi Roberta, I foudn this thread rather late as I was looking for something else, but thought I would share a little info with you. Our neighbors have a very large cut your own tree farm that has all the bells and whistles. Both of my teens have worked there during the season and I've gotten to know the owners very well. They don't charge for the wagon rides, reindeer, vist with Mrs. Claus, etc., but it is built into the cost of the trees. They will tell you right up front that their trees aren't the cheapest in the area but that they provide a lot besides the tree. The team of horses that they rent to pull the wagons cost $1500 per day. Yes, $1500 per day! That's a lot of trees just to cover your horses! The first thing that they will say about their operation is that you really need to work at it all the time. They actually sold the business on contract at one point and moved out of state, but the buyer did not put much effort into the business and eventually defaulted on the contract. They came back and have the place running better than ever. In the last few years, they started growing other trees for landscaping to balance the seasonality of the Christmas trees. That foresight will serve them well as this past year was the worst season in recent history. I've heard this from them as well as two other owners of cut-your-own farms. The rain that we had in early December really hurt sales this year. Also keep in mind that your busiest times will be the weekends from Thanksgiving to Christmas. My kids both enjoyed their jobs, especially because it was a great way for them to make a fair amount of money in a relatively short time, but they did find out that they had to sacrifice doing other things because of working all those weekends. Hope this information helps! V....See MoreAnybody have a good jalapeno popper recipe for freezing?
Comments (13)We all have preferences. If I was going to do it, probably do it as Dennis said: == cut off ~1/2" from tip. == Stuff them (I like cream cheese with some shrimp bits) == Bread them == Deep fry them. Just barely, half cooked. == Let them cool down == Freeze. When want to serve, heat in oven, covered with foil, prevent drying out. I am talking about filling the whole pepper, not halved. Frozen Peppers without breading won't hold when thawed, me thinks. BTW: I have a small deep frier. I do a lot of mushrooms, shrimps, zukes, etc. I will try stuffed Jals and/or HHW....See MoreDoes anybody do canning? How does...
Comments (26)I will check it out once I get back into gardening mode--I'll be starting seeds in a couple weeks! You can check out some of my pics of some of the 'maters & peppers I grow at the link below. I had thousands of pics but can't get one of my external hard drives to boot, will have to see if I still have them on my flash card. I haven't updated that page in about 4 years and the 2nd half that doesn't have links to pics, many of those I've since grown and photographed. The e-mail at the bottom is no longer valid. I have grown or have had seeds for over 500 tomato varieties and over 100 pepper varieties....See MoreDoes Frontgate not use standard Christmas tree replacement bulbs??
Comments (85)Do you have Balsam Hill? On my ~ 12 year-old Frontgate, have never encountered a bulb different size than the others. And I bet I've replaced every one of them by now! But mine may be different. MANY times if I replace any that are discolored, plug a socket ALL the way into the lightkeeper tool, and click the trigger a few times, the branch will come back on. but sometimes a long struggle, trying to trace which part of branch has power, which doesn't then concentrate in the area in between as the area where the bad bulb should be. very hard to trace the wire exactly though. if no power anywhere in strand, check fuse, plug if you notice a BRIGHT branch (bulbs getting too much power at risk of blowing more), or bulbs out "during the season" replace any out that you see/can reach. if a whole branch is out once ornaments up, forget it Every year I consider an LED tree, but it's not the same look and some have flicker and I'm not convinced about getting replacement bulbs for those though haven't researched. I'd buy a bunch at the same time as tree if I did. It's a myth that LED don't burn out. At least you shouldn't lose the whole strand though. With this tree most of the work is FINDING the bad one when whole strand is out...See Moredirtygardener73
