What is the deal with 'grafted tomatoes?'

I was browsing through a Gardens Alive! catalog yesterday and they are advertising 4 varieies of "grafted tomato plants." They don't give any information about what rootstock the tomato plant scions are grafted onto, but they claim that the grafted plants have improved disease resistance and better tolerance of environmental stresses. So (they claim), they grow stronger and produce more and better quality fruit.

Although I understand about the advantages of grafting some other plants (such as fruit trees), I am wondering if the claims about the performance of these grafted tomatoes are "bovine excrement." They'd have to be pretty freaking awesome performers to be worth $9.95 PER PLANT - plus shipping!

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Are they blowing smoke or are grafted tomatoes actually awesome?
