Great stuff Dave !
In the last photo, your P.o. 'Pendula Bruns' appears to be developing a bit of a branching structure - somewhat more pronounced than the photo you posted a while back...
Looking at some other photos of these recently (large specimens), it occurred to me that they make a kind of natural "modern sculpture" in the yard: each has a unique pipe-like shape, with various humps and bends. They make man-made abstract sculptures completely redundant, IMO.
In the first photo, that looks like J.h. 'Blue Chip' near the bottom -- I love those. Have several. The other day I was trying to clean the leaves from underneath one of them, but when I tried to lift up one of the fronds, it was stuck to the ground -- rooted I guess :O)
I'm curious -- what are the two tall plants in your second photo ?

Yes, you can cut it back. Some plants do this when they are healthy, and it may be a normal habit for Passionate Kisses. The "cut to 5-leaflet leaf" thing is only relevant if you want long stems, otherwise, not necessary. In this case, sounds like you need to cut below the "spray" or "candelabra".

Trailrunner - I was reading some of this to DH last night, he thought they sounded like great ideas btw, and when I was done reading the first thing he said to me was,"Wow, I can't believe people take the time to type that much out trying to help someone. " Ha. Gotcha on the wear them only for running. Oh I know not to wear the orthotics and insoles at the same time. I know now (didn't at first years ago!) to take out the pads shoes come with first. Powerstep is the brand of inserts I bought from the Podiatrist. Heard of or any thoughts on them? I forget what name my orthotics are they don't say anything on them but they came in a bag that did. The bottom is hard plastic but the top is blue firm foamy stuff. He said something about it being new stuff. Do you think the Podiatrist would give me a hard time about "put a good padded front made of the new high tech triple layer stuff they have or....you can get a good insert and cut it to fit flush with the front of the orthotic"? Guess I won't know until I try but I'm picturing them wanting to know what I'm diagnosing myself since they apparently didn't think I needed that. Oh, well. I wondered how the ball of my foot was getting any support if I'm use my new orthotics in shoes I took the insole out since there's nothing there. In the past (I'm sure from wearing heels) I've had pain in the balls of my feet. I tried to tell him this too while I was there but he wasn't interested in hearing it since I wasn't having pain. Thanks for the heads up about the glucosamine. I think it actually might be what DH takes! I need to check that out. He gets on me about how I really should take it. I can take all three of those types of pills. That does sound like a lot! I'm guessing it just kills the pain longer? Does that help with the healing process at all. Perhaps that's a dumb question. I checked out that roadrunner site and the chart and I'm not sure if I'm N or PN. I'm under 150lbs and I do under 25 miles a week for N but the PN says, you run races or enjoy fast running. I like fast running. When I said I never considered myself a runner it's because I normally don't do more than 3 miles at a time and normally it's intervals. The thought of a 50 or even 10 mile race makes me cringe. Figured I'd ask but thought N would probably be my best bet regardless? Also, the NB shoes look like they're for trail running and I'm normally on a treadmill, does this matter? I really like that site. It even tells you to order sizes up for some shoes. The current ones I have are on there and it does say to order 1/2 size bigger. Go figure. Onlines shoes didn't tell me that! How's this for the laces? It still feels kind of tight around the top. Probably just the poor fitted shoes. For now, I'll rest from running. I have other sneakers I can wear for biking or whatever. By the time I'm ready to hopefully run again I'll make sure to have good sneakers. Seww - Thanks for the link. It seems very common here that even running stores have people in them that don't really know what they're doing. They just find the size in the back room. I'm at least going to go and attempt to try some on in person. Deedee - Oh my, I laughed out loud when I read that. That wasn't real nice of him! For a long time I thought I must be the only person with wider feet! One time on ebay I bought a really nice and expensive pair of heels. I did not know B meant narrow (I think it's B - whichever one is narrow). There is no way I can wear them. Not possible. It was funny even trying to put them on. They're in my closet because I couldn't resell them. Nobody in the world has a size 5 narrow foot either. :)

Back splash: tile or tile over granite?

I'm a little concerned that your countertop sub (is he a fabricator?) is talking about making a tight seal between vertical and horizontal. With modern fabrication, say over the last 20 years, there has not been a problem with that, the way there used to be years ago when counters were formica and fabrication methods were less refined and precise. And the "sanitary" comment is out of left field--did your contractor say that? In any case, I will list the reasons why I do not like a small strip of granite (usually 4") on the backsplash: - you will spend a lot of effort designing a beautiful tile backsplash; why cut it short by 4". - the additional horizontal line of the 4" strip will visually make the space between your counter and upper cabinets look smaller and more cramped - some people think the 4" backsplash looks dated, though opinions vary on this - the 4" backsplash creates a small "ledge" which collects dust. Yet one more thing to clean. - you will be charged for the material and installation for the 4" backsplash; money that you may have preferred to spend elsewhere. I think that a 4" backpslash would be good if you were NOT installing tile and just had drywall on the rest of the wall. Or, if you simply like the look, as a lot of people do. Get what YOU want, not what makes life easier for your contractor. BTW, who is installing your tile backsplash? You may want to find someone outside of your contractor's subs. I was recommended someone by the tile store where I bought my tile. He specialized in tile--all he did is tile, and had been doing that for many years, so he really knew what he was doing. I am only mentioning this because of my concern that your contractor is saying he needs the granite strip to "make a tight seal". How elaborate will be your tile backsplash? If it's just, e.g., plain subway tile, that's pretty easy. But with a more complex pattern, tile backsplashes can be exacting work, and if your contractor isn't so painstaking, you will have to live with a backsplash that may not look so great (we've seen that happen on this forum several times).

thx shades. I'll stop by HD in a few days and see if they have the larger ones. Lowe's had a space for them but it had cafe rods in it. I need 2 of the larger ones for my west windows. I'm going to hang that foil looking insulation (lke for duct work) in those 2 windows during the summers - using tension rods. I can easily then take them down Oct - May. I'll have curtains up over them. I also don't have doors on my closets right now so I'm going to hang curtains there for now - to try and keep a bit of puppy fur out of them. probably a lost cause - lol! I think lowe's and my back door have a conspiracy against me. I can't see where the vinyl spline part is connected on the door frame on the hinge side. That one doesn't look damaged, so I'll just not replace it for now. I'll check to see if my front door needs it replaced on either side. The pkg comes with 2 long (hght) sections and a short one for across the top. There have been several times when i've thought I'd just forget vinyl or laminate flooring and put down carpet (when lowe's or HD have a pay to install 1 room and the others are installed free) just to have it over and me not the one doing it. That thought doesn't usually last long tho. The thought of all that hair, dirt and dust from puppy and the desert is more than I can bear anymore.

On the Landscape Design forum the topic of edging often comes up, and so does the topic of keeping a pea gravel surface clean of organic debris. How do you find the task of maintaining the brick edging vs. the non-bricked edges, and how 'bout maintaining those gravel surfaces... they are pea gravel, aren't they, including that absolutely fascinating river that is neither bed nor path but an optical treat that combines the two? Gawjus, as one of the LD Forum regulars would say. And you must be a magician with a lawn mower... oh, and nice conifers too!

Hello jaro,

In responce to your question-- what are the two tall plants in 2nd photo? The upright in the foreground is Picea ormorkia 'Pendula'. In the background Picea abies 'Weeping Blue'.
I have notice that Juniperus h. 'Bule Chip' will root from fronds. I like to use these conifers to bring the garden right out to the border. Another Juniperus h. I like to use is Juniperus h. 'Monber'. Similar to 'Blue Chip' but has a taller growth habit and not carried by to many nurseries. I inclosed a photo for you to see.

We won't talk about the clothes line. We all know what give and take means in a relationship. I am hopeing conifer growth will make it extinct.

Are you kidding?? I'd pay to have the privilege of hanging my laundry on that line, and the clothes probably smell amazing when they come in. One of the things I like best about my fairly newly landscaped yard is that it is now a pleasure to take out the garbage and recycling; no chore is too mundane if it provides an excuse to go into the yard. How can you make laundry fun? Put the line in such a setting. Obviously, Dave, you don't DO the laundry :-)

You are right I don't DO the laundry. You are also right in that the clothes do smell amazing. What most of you are not going to believe is I don't even know the clothes line is there when I am strolling through conifer world.
The line will remain as it was the first thing that I planted in the yard 25 years ago. It's kind of part of the family. I can't begain to tell you how many times I have moved it. LOL.

A vigorous vine would make the clothes line extinct! Actually I didn't even notice it until it was mentioned. Your yard/landscape looks *amazing*! Nice job & thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your concernes happyhoe. From my prospective I never intended to design, plant this garden and just set on it. I am continually redesigning adding and relocating plants to different areas of the garden. Most conifers are dwarf or narrow uprights such as Picea abies 'Cupressiana' Yes I do have some big players on the outer fringes of my design. Heck, I wake up in the middle of the night with a new idea and am out there the next day implementing the change. This hobby has developed into a full time job which I enjoy. The rewards are many, disappointments are few. I haven't found anything to top it.
