Any ideas what is wrong?

This fir tree was planted 2 springs ago. It has done well until about a month ago, when several of the branches turned brown and died. It has been watered regularly and other than that we have left it alone. We have sandy soil and it is in full sun all day.

I know nothing about trees, but just looking at it, it looks like there are small holes and cracks in the trunk around the dead branches that have a lot of sap dripping out and some black fine sawdust looking stuff coming out of the holes/cracks as well.

Also is seems that the needles on the top half of the tree are a paler color and a bit drier than the bottom two thirds.

Any ideas what is wrong with it and if the whole tree might die?

Thanks
