July and August Blooms

Agastache, Blue Mist caryopteris, scabiosa, Maximillian sunflowers, snapdragons and my Morning Star hibscus tree have been my major summer bloomers thus far. I added osteospermum, Marguerite and Euryops this year hoping for additional summer blooms.

You go first, Sharon, and we can tell you if you've left out anything that will bloom between July and Thanksgiving in the hot and humid south. ;)

Thanks everyone:) Hi Mary :) As far as Monarda is concerned I just belief M. didyma and most of it's cultivars are most susceptible to infection. Spraying plants with plain ol' water can aid in the prevention of the spores ability to germinate and often kills them, however it's hard to keep up trying to keep the leaves wet and doing so could also lead to other fungal issues that flourish with free moisture...especially at night or in humid climates, ect.; Botrytis, Downy Mildew, ect. Didn't even realize the Hollyhock flower was in that picture! Actually I only had a handful of about 30-40 Hollyhocks that looked worth a damn....the grasshoppers came in droves this year! The earwigs also did a fare share of destruction this year on these and several other plants as well. Today I noticed several earwigs hiding within the Yvonne's Salvia flowers and sunflowers...good grief! Tiffy, I'd be happy to save seeds for the M. fistulosa...this is just the common prairie species native to my home state of North Dakota as well as S. Dakota and Nebraska. I'm pretty sure it's also native to MB, SK, AB and ON. Seeds are ready to harvest in October. Might have to remind me when it's gets to be that time :)) Karen, Sure hope to bite into some tomatoes soon. My mouth waters every time I walk by LOL! I wonder how will I know when the Cherokee Green are ripe? I guess it will be by feel huh? Regarding fungal or bacterial infection of leaves; whatever it is if it's not severe you can remove and properly discard infected leaves....when dry...never wet. I'm sure you are already mulching beneath plants to prevent soil splashing :) Some more Hollyhocks that didn't look too bad. This giant red one had to come down after several days of rain/wind...my hummingbirds weren't too happy 'bout that LOL! It's ok though there's plenty others they visit....can't believe how much them go for the blue and purple larkspur! Here it was on July 8th...a monster ....again on the 14th... close up... Some hollyhocks in front on July 30th...

I would be interested in knowing as well. I am in N E FL and I am surprised that chili thrips havent showed up here yet. They are rampant in S FL and we are getting into the 100F here in the summers now and having warmer winters without much frost so I know they are coming lol. One thing I've noticed that loves to eat the regular thrips is our native little green tree frogs. As soon as thrips show up in the spring, I will soon see the little frogs start hanging out in the flower blossoms gobbling up thrips. These frogs are endangered here in FL now due to invasion of the Cuban Tree frogs that gobble up the green tree frogs, native lizards etc. I wonder if these tree frogs could b used in other places like Calif to control thrips. They do a great job here. I had these frogs in our yard when I lived in Louisiana so hopefully the Cuban tree frogs arent going eat all them up in LA.

This has been blooming all July and August in DFW. What is it, please

They probably look different because Society garlic is Tulbaghia violacea and Garlic chives are Allium tuberosum - both in the onion family but two separate kinds of plants. It's easy for me to know which is which: if it's alive it is garlic chives. Have tried over and over but can't keep society garlic going in my garden!

Nell, for some strange reason I can never open the slideshows on my computer. I think I need flash, but this computer won't let me d'load it. :(

Anyway, I'm racking my brain trying to think of what gave me blooms last July and August. I planted a native azalea (plumleaf) that blooms then, but it's such a slow grower that it will take forever to make any kind of impact. :(

I generally put out a few potted mums for an instant color fix. The next spring, I plant them in the garden somewhere.

My vitex has only been blooming a short time. I'm not sure how long it will stay in bloom.

Let's see--butterfly bush and lantana seem to go to the end of fall.

Red Double Knockout roses will go to November.

I added white butterfly ginger this year. I think it's supposed to bloom during that time.

I think that's all I have. It's a mighty puny list, don't you think?!

Oh...and canna lilies! I do have a few varieties of those. :)

I have the mum "Clara Curtis" all over the place. It's wonderful in the fall. I just planted a Joe Pye Weed recently for fall color. I also have some asters and plan to add more this fall when they show up at my local nursery. I want to add some Goldenrod, too, for yellow in the fall garden.

Zinnas,
purple hyacinth bean vine,
cannas,
purslane,
profusion zinnas (which are a nice mounding plant, not upright like regular zinnas),
LANTANA,
salvias,
pentas,
vinca,
Mexican Bush sage toward the end of August.

That's part of my list. My daylilies and roses will pop out a bloom or two if the plants are kept well watered.

Sorry - I was thinking fall and you're talking about late summer. My shasta daisy (Becky) is going to go clear into August I think - it has a ton of buds. I have enough roses planted that there's always a number of those blooming in the summer. I just trimmed my vitex so I'm hoping I'll have another bloom cycle in later in July. I have some dwarf crepe myrtles that are just now beginning to bud. Do you have a confederate rose? I have one that blooms later in the summer. Right now, everything in my garden is green (no flowers).

Oh thank you all for your contributions. I saw some plant names that I was not familiar with, but will be checking out soon.

I walked through the garden this evening and saw that the Stoke's aster was about to bloom. The whirling butterflies shows no sign of letting up. The coneflower are going strong. I added two goldsturm rudbeckia this year that are loaded with blooms. So those are all probably July and potential August bloomers. :)

Mary, I know how you feel about the garden being mostly green. That's the way I felt when I walked out back to my woodland garden. There are patches of partial sunshine where some blooming plants like asiatic lilies, daylilies, and a few of my other blooming plants go. It's hard to find things to bloom in the less sunnier areas. The astilbe is looking fried right now. Azaleas bloomed way back in April. The oakleaf hydrangeas have bloomed and the blooms are turning that golden brown color now. My other hydrangeas are young and haven't produced much blooms. In fact, the only one I'm happy with is Endless Summer. Lemon Daddy, Lanarth, and Blue Billows have yet to give me a bloom. Lady in Red is blooming, but lightly. I am just craving more color...more umph! :)

Nell, is lycoris aka spider lily? I remember spider lilies from when I was a little girl. The neighbor had lots that grew alongside their drive. I thought they were the most beautiful flower ever! I have been looking for some to put somewhere in my garden. :)

Lycoris radiata is red spider lilies, yes. There are also pink spider lilies, lycoris squamagera, and yellow spider lilies, lycoris lutea. I have three of the yellow and hope to see bloom for the first time this year. June is the ideal planting time.

I was thinking about all the summer and fall bulbs that will grow in GA and AL before I came back to this post.

See if you can get my blog to open for you. It has photos of oxblood lilies blooming in August and I can't remember if there's a pic of Sternbergia or I just talked about them, LOL. You can stagger planting times for gladioli and have them blooming all summer. I have yellow glads that are not yet ready to bloom. Acidanthera (Abyssinian glads) are a good late summer bloomer, too.

There is no end of pretties to bloom well into fall.

Marilyn from Texas has suggested in the past, and I follow her advise, to cut everything back hard in July if you live where it is really hot. Then the plants will come back by September and go on through fall.
