Advice with rose selection in SE FL
Comments (25)Sumognat You are on the right path. I live in Delray Beach. The thrips here are 11 months a year. I have discovered the hard way that if you spray chemicals for disease you will have major thrip problems. It kills the beneficial insects that eat the thrips. On the other hand if you don't spray for disease the roses are a diseased mess. So it's a pick your problems situation. I have discovered that if you go with old roses that are disease resistant you can have beautiful roses without disease or without insect damage, atleast it is mimimal. I would highly recommend the china rose, Vincent Godsiff. It stays small and blooms it's head off 12 months a year. My Don Juans, grafted on fortuniana are about the only modern roses that haven't bit the dust with disease. Best of luck....See MoreRoses deformed and shrunken-Chilli Thrips?!
Comments (13)The Southern Ag product is cheaper (you don't get as much). I haven't used it but the word around the rose society is that it doesn't work as well as the Dow product. Also, some folks in the rose society used the Worms way version and the "carrier" had a bad effect on roses. I think they got spray burn. The last time I got Conserve it was over $100 for a quart. I got that from Tampa Agricultural supply. Rosemania.com carries it too. For a home gardener it will last a long time. Chili Thrips perfer some roses more than others. We should spread the word what they like/don't like. I know that they leave Louis Philippe alone. One of my new red HTs (Vina Russo) is a chili thrip magnet!...See MoreJust how much damage can applying granular insecticide do in a garden?
Comments (1)What any insecticide will do to a garden and the environment depends on how much is applied and for how long. Imidacloprid mimics nicotine and is a systemic that is moved by plants to all parts and has been seen to be harmful to beneficial insects as well as the pests. Our pollinators are adversely affected by this poison as well as many of the predators that might help control this pest. Because of the quick life cycle of the Chilli Thrip it is not recommended to stay with any one insecticide but to rotate among several. Since the Chilli Throp lives it entire life on the plant would Floating Row Covers be an effective barrier to them? kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreWhat's the one hardest thing about growing roses where you are?
Comments (90)Here in my Southern Ontario, z5b garden it's hard to choose. SO MANY roses are just marginally hardy here, and so a little bit of extreme winter weather can kill them, whereas most winters will not. A warm period followed by a later freeze can also kill them. So do you take a chance, or do you skip such a vast number of great roses? We have overcast, wet, humid weather here a lot and there is blackspot like crazy. And of course this area is swarming with Japanese Beetles. During the height of their swarms I can pick/shake off over 100 day, which is a lot for my ~20 roses. Some will have none. Some will have dozens. Every year I wonder why I put up with it. Then every June when the first flush hits and before the big problems come I remember why....See MoreLarry (Los Angeles, 10a, Sunset Zone 19)
