Hi all, I had 32F at 10:30 PM last night and it's still below 32F at 8:15 AM so it looks like 10 hours of freezing conditions just North East of Orlando.

How far south did the freeze go?

32F low at 7:30 this am in Jupiter near the coast.

It's 28 right now in east Orlando but it was 26 at 6am. My goldfish pond is frozen over, although it's just a coating. Does anyone know if the fish will survive?

At 8:59 in Ponce Inlet, the temperature is 34.5 degrees. That .5 is important! At least the sun is shining!

It was 30 at 6:30 when I took the boys out. They sure didn't stay out long!

34 in Fort Myers at 9:18 a.m. with wind chill is reads 24! I'm sitting at my computer looking at the White Flower Farm online catalog, just like I used to do every winter in Michigan. Do I dare try tuberous begonias again? It is nice to think about warmer days to come, especially since in Florida they will be here in just a few days.

Low point of 22 this am, up to a blistering 29 now. Still have snow/sleet on the top of the boathouse from yesterday.

Early this morning it dropped to 27 here in Tarpon Springs according to Weather Underground. It is 37 now.
I fear for the large Foxtail Palm on the north side of the house. It still has fronds damaged by the cold last year, I just hope it can survive this!

Solstice - we used to keep goldfish in Ohio when the pond would freeze over for weeks at a time. They would go to the bottom and "sleep" it off until spring. The pond was about 18-24" deep.

This just goes to show you how the temps can be so different just a few miles from each other, here in 'sunny Florida'.....I'm looking out the window at my poor ' Sanchezia ', all brown and droopy, and my Magilla and Coleus , all forlorn and brown... they were blasted and burned Fri. night even before any frost, they just don't like any kind of chill..... I'll wait until several weeks have gone by and then just trim them back and they'll come back from the roots and the brown leaves will protect them for the next few nights of cold..... some of the Patience plants were burned as well and I'm hoping they'll come back.....tonight is supposed to get even colder than last night so we'll see...... sally

It was 32 degrees at my house at 7am today.

I've got a little pond 3'x5'x2'deep in the ground with a couple of goldfish and lots of platies. I've lost a few platies to the cold weather so far, but the goldfish seem fine. I fashioned a tent out of clear plastic to put over the pond yesterday and it seems to have helped insulate it since there were no more dead fish this morning.

My min/max thermometer says it was down to 21.7 this morning around 5 AM. It started warming up before sunrise, which is unusual. I'm in NW Deland near Fl Hospital. Here's a gardening book my son in Oregon recommended to me. ;>) john

Sorry to hear about your problems. Here in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia it's 82 F at 10:30 in the morning. In the south, Victoria, South Australia & NSW temps of 110 F are predicted with a fire weather warning.

I have noticed that Florida can occasionlly get very cold which can be devastating as the plants do not have any resistance to the cold. We are lucky here in Queensland as Australia does not have any Antarctic regions than can cause these occasional outbreaks of cold at lower latitudes.

Ponce Inlet is warmer, I think! Its 8:18 and 35 degrees. Substantial difference inside last night--not nearly as chilly. This is good!!!!!

34F was the lowest here last night (Delray). Is it over now with the cold blast? I am thinking about moving my plants outside again because the light in the garage is rather dim.

I have no idea how cold it got outside last night and this morning but it was supposed to get down to 19 according to Bay News 9. I can tell you it was only 59 in my house when I got up at 6 this morning and I had the heat set for 65! The heat just could not keep up against the cold. I really didn't want to get out from under my nice warm feather blanket! Of course, my house is located at the bottom of two hills so it gets a bit colder then the surrounding area so who knows how cold it really was.

Not much different here from the night before, 21.5. We had at least 8hrs below freezing. The MADIS station at Lake Woodruff(Glenwood) recorded 17. Rural areas and suburbs are of course, colder than towns ,cities and airports where the "Official" temps are reported.

When it is over 100F the humidity is very low 10 to 15% however this along with strong winds are ideal conditions for bushfires. I don't know if you heard about the fires we had in Victoria last summer. Several small country towns were raised to the ground and over 200 people perished. So far this summer we do not seem to have had such damaging fires. Let's hope it stays that way.

Brisbane on the otherhand is ranges from the low 70s to about 90F in the summer with humidity from 70 to 80%. and in the winter from about 52F to the low 70s. I guess this is about the same as you normally get in Florida. At present flame trees, cassias and plumerias are in full bloom.

This morning it was 38 , so it seems to be moderating, and Bay News 9 says the High is moving east and the jet stream is moving back north, and should be 70 by the week-end..... my son lives in a house where the Heat Pump freezes up, it gets frost all over the coils and they have to go out and turn the hose on it and wash off the frost to get it to heat the house, and then it struggles... so may folks here in Fla. use Heat Pumps, I have one, but I understand that the more expensive ones have a cycle to melt that frost, when the temp drops this low, mine has been working fine..... this is why Heat Pumps are not used very far north I guess, they simply can't handle extra cold weather..... this may be your problem, Karalynn- if you have a Heat Pump....... sally

Sally, yes I have a heat pump on the outside unit but the air handler in the garage has a back up auxilary heater in it that kicks in when the outside unit can't handle the cold. Not all air handlers have the auxilary heater in them but since I had mine worked on between christmas and new years I know that mine not only has one it is in good working order. No, my problem is that I have no ceiling in the garage and not enough insullation in the attic to combat all the cold air that builds up in the garage. I just don't have the money to put more insulation up there or to have a ceiling put in the garage. It doesn't help that I have a block house with no insulation in the walls and a bare concrete floor in the living room and tile floors everywhere else! Oh well, this cold can't last forever and while it's hard to get my house warm during the winter cold snaps, those block walls and concrete/tile floors sure make it easy to keep my house cool in the summer!

25.7° this morning at 7:30...got as low as 22° sometime around 3am...hovered between 25° to 27° since after midnight.BRUTAL!! Today was my worst day since this mess started!!

Kate the fish will make it if you have some depth to the pond for them to hibernate in. If possible keep a filter running. Is it in the sun? That will help.

32 here in Sarasota this morning. It was much colder last night than predicted as I had ice in the birdbath and frost everywhere which hadn't happened before. Everything brown of course, even the garden full of crown of thorns which have always survived.
Groan - let's hope this is the end.

I agree John, the weather folks lied! I took the tomatoes back out of the garage yesterday afternoon and into garden. Then, when leaving this morning at 0600 I had a much heavier layer of ice on my windshield than any of the previous mornings. I fear my trust of the weathermen may have done my tomatoes in....

This afternoon it was lovely at 60 so I went out and took the sheets off the stuff... my Patience plants have a bit of burn on the tops, my Papaya that were covered had some leaves burned but the centers of the plants look good, the papaya that were too tall to cover look dismal, all droopy, and the few little tomato and pepper plants I do have look worn out, I had 2 sheets on most of the stuff and it burned them right thru' the double layers... the staghorn ferns look OK also the roses, but the pentas are burned.... guess I'll just have to start over again on some stuff......... sally

At 6:45 Wednesday morning it was 39°! We worked on the box yesterday and I will be planting daylilies today! Happy dance!!

Awe, I went out to put some yard waste at the curb...a few branches from my foxtails and my dead tomatoe plants. Poor little frog was frozen to one of the foxtail branches.

Tom, sorry to hear that the forcast was wrong and your plants got damaged. Mine too. All my seedlings are toast. I guess I will start over again. I was late with the fall starts due to heat, now I will be late again, due to cold. It is what it is.
