picea snake vs fort ann

i have seen conflicting names on this..

one place has a englemanii snake..

and another.. a glauca snake...

and then there is glauca fort ann ...

are they all the same..

are they picea glauca...

or p. englemanii [however its spelled]

the ACS database has fort ann as glauca.. and snake as englemanii ...

The ACS is right. Fort Ann is P.glauca and Snake is P. engelmannii.

Fort Ann is green too Ken while Snake is blue.

Dax-I purchased one last spring. It was labeled "White Spruce 'Snake' (Picea glauca 'Fort Ann')". It is more Blue than it is Green, at least the new growth is. Older growth is more blueish green.

Does that mean I have the engelmanni 'Snake' than?
Does that mean the propagator has no idea what they have and is covering all the bases?

In the spring rush I tagged it as engelmanni 'Snake' thinking that was what I bought, not bothering to read the tag any further. I took a picture of it yesterday. I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics this weekend. I believe Ken and I both got ours from the same place.

... ... ... ... ... oh you guys are hilarious ... ... ... ... anyway .... so i go to a friends in Cleveland ... he he says lets go to saybrook ... OH .... whatever ... so we drive for 1.5 hours ... and stop in to Al's place ... Al has a half dozen greenhouses out back ... all crushed from the record snowfalls that winter ... this was about 8 years ago ... its just a complete mess ... my wallet is stuffed [oh for the good old days] .... and i start picking out stuff .... never bought foo foo conifers before.. just a few of the old standards.. but man.. now i own 5 acres.. 4 of which are full sun.. and i need to cover some earth .... so i am going through the place.. picked out all kinds of stuff.. half with no tags .... but now i know they were very well known ... i keep asking him how much.. he wont answer .... just talking with jon ... so i get jon aside.. i'm like ... i need to know how much ... jon wont answer .. though my wallet is stuffed .... it's not that stuffed .... anyway.. after a glorious few hours .... i finally throw down the gauntlet ... and the guy wont take my money ... i'm like.. carp ... i should have picked more... lol ... so off we drive ... 20 new conifers in my possession ... we go around a few bends ... and down the road.. and jon takes me to girards ... where i actually buy another load ... and so it was done ... last year .. i bumped into Al F. .... at hosta college [yeah.. go figure on that] .... and told him he may as well been a heroin pusher.. and just knocked me down and injected me ... and gave me 5 more bags ..... that his generosity has cost me a LOT of money .... lol ... that man had a grin as wide as the grand canyon ... i think i will make this a new post about enabling.. turns out.. al does grafting for his son.. who married the daughter of the Girards ... go figure on all that ... have a good day ken

Good morning Barbara, I hope you are not a state worker...lol No special treatment for all my Picea glauca's. I don't know why yours would burn...nothing any hotter then Kansas in July and August and mine suffer no burn problems in full sin. Maybe you have some other underlying issues that are causing them to appear to have burn issues. Young and tender plants I do protect for at least a year and then plant in a permanent location. 'Rainbow's End' new flush will suffer burn if not offered some protection till it acclimates. The 'Pendula' has no special growing needs. A beautiful cultivar. I have two of them. A great focal point conifer. When it is hot I hose them down regularly two to three times a week along with all the other cultivars. Aside from the needed cool down this will flush out the dreaded spider mites that some of us have issues with. I have never suffered any damage from these insects and I believe the regular hose down keeps me free of them. Thanks for your positive comment about my garden. Dave

enjoy it.. its spectacular.... and then.. when its too big.. get rid of it.. the 10 year show will make your toes tingle .... i think the recent pix are on the laptop ... and i dont fire it up too often ... i would say 12 to 15 feet in 10 years .... my last pic.. with my hand for scale.. is its annual growth rate ... whats it look like.. 8 inches .. maybe a bit more on the leader a few pics above ... ken

hey all .... barb.. i NEVER use photobucket for photo manipulation ... thats right up there with watching paint dry ... i use a Ulead program ... much faster ... i usually only adjust the darkness ... NEVER the color ... all the pix were taken about 2 weeks back.. just before the snow flew.. all pics in 2 days ... snap and shoot... download... retake a couple that were bad ... label them all at download..using the database .. avoid any typing i can .. lol ... taken in bed sequence.. so immediately put into folders based on beds ... will .. my pix ought to be encouraging you to stop buying MORE .. and save for some acreage .. lol ... i dont know what juniperus pendula would do unstaked ... IMHO.. there are enough ground cover junipers.. that are much better for that ... this is one mean little bat-turd .... you would NEVER want to walk into it.. or brush your hand along it .... concolor is a weed for me... pure yellow sand to at least 15 feet down ... maybe i have perfect drainage ... all my conifers are free range in their third year.. except for intense extended drought .. like this year.. and even then.. i doubt i dragged a hose around the WHOLE yard more than 3 times .... and when i did. . it was the smaller stuff that got watered ...and a 6 foot tree is NOT small stuff ... get over it.. or die.. i am not interested in too many FOO FOO plants.. been there done that.. got a life .... regardless.. thanks for the drop-in notes.. i knew there were more of you out there ... happy holidays ken

Indeed, the Picea glauca'Fort Ann'is a blueish green now.
It's a green with a blueish glow, which it's not clearly visable at the photo.
This selection is found in the U.S.
This is a small one in my collection.

The photo in the Conifer Encyclopedia from Van Gelderen and Van Hoey-Smith shows us a Picea engelmanii 'Snake' which do have a blue colour and a bit longer needles.
It's found in Germany.

Here is a photo of a fairly large Picea glauca 'Fort Ann'. This is classified as a "snake type". I have never heard of Picea glauca 'Snake'.

The plant is kind of a mess but is actually one of my favorites. No accounting for taste I guess.

The ACS photos of Picea engelmannii "Snake" don't look like others I've seen on European web sites.... (more *snakey*) ....ditto for the van Gelderen reference.

I got a P.e. "Snake" from Darren last year, but its a very small graft, so no way of knowing at this stage whether it will end up looking like the european or ACS variety....

Another possibility is that they change character at older age.
Can anyone clarify this, please ? (Thnx)
