Picea glauca 'Fort Ann' or 'Dent'?

A couple of you (I think Joy and Severn?) had mentioned this plant was 'Dent'. I followed up with the nursery and they said they never carried 'Dent' and insist that it is 'Fort Ann'.

Can anyone help? Its placement is somewhat dependent on what cultivar it is.

Picea glauca "Fort Ann" are a strange form,fast growing.
Picea glauca "Dent" are a variegated form with normanl growth.

It were Clement and I who mentioned that this one is a 'Dent', which it realy is because of it's white variegation.

'Fort Ann' is a snake like type...

i also have a Picea sitchensis version.. though it seems to not welcome my z5 winter ... 'Virgata' ... as sold ... the form it has taken on.. is snake like ... though the name seems to indicate otherwise... since rat tail is not snake like ... only time will tell maybe snow cover this winter.. has protected it from the 4 weeks of single digit temps ... ken

Trust me, I've tried... half the functions on this forum I can't get to work work including updating the members page =)... Everytime I click "save" it doesn't do anything. Hi Ken, Bob's saying that when weak shoots of upright cultivars are grafted that they take a dis-similar form than those that are grafted from tip-leader "terminals." Those that are grafted of the weak, side-wood, they must be staked diligently and eventually, after some period of time, they will become typical-cultivar. I have heard though that this isn't full proof. Sometimes weaker, less & vigorous, might never make a cultivar. It's confusing, however it is, something along these lines. Maybe you've heard here, often, that i.e. Picea pungens Glauca Procumbens was a plant that became what it is because it is grafted from the weak side shoots of an upright tree? This is certainly the case. If Bob meant something different, I don't see it. Picea glauca Fort Ann is certainly it's own animal. Bob uses the phrase 'selection of the scionwood' - meaning, where the wood was cut from the plant. Hope this helps! Dax

Dax-I purchased one last spring. It was labeled "White Spruce 'Snake' (Picea glauca 'Fort Ann')". It is more Blue than it is Green, at least the new growth is. Older growth is more blueish green. Does that mean I have the engelmanni 'Snake' than? Does that mean the propagator has no idea what they have and is covering all the bases? In the spring rush I tagged it as engelmanni 'Snake' thinking that was what I bought, not bothering to read the tag any further. I took a picture of it yesterday. I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics this weekend. I believe Ken and I both got ours from the same place. Eliot

So the votes are in....'Dent' it is. It appears this is full size (but slower growing) Picea glauca.

I wanted to follow-up after receiving a response from the nursery.

That defininately proves it. How is your 'Dent' doing today? Surely looks fantastic from a couple years back.

Below is a pic of the growth emerging in May. I straightened the little bugger since.

it is huge ....

and as usual.. some of the white is browning/burning in the heat ... and what white doesnt burn in summer.. burns in winter .... and the plant never seems to suffer from it ...

it does have its special season ...

if a wholesaler has a contract for 100 glauca ... but only has 90 of a named variety ... they sometimes throw in other glauca .. rather than void the contract ...

Your the man if you can snap a pic of it! I have little room for 'large' conifers now. I wonder if I should donate or trade.

If we're talking 6' in ten years then I'll enjoy it for now.

enjoy it.. its spectacular....

and then.. when its too big.. get rid of it..

the 10 year show will make your toes tingle ....

i think the recent pix are on the laptop ... and i dont fire it up too often ...

i would say 12 to 15 feet in 10 years ....

my last pic.. with my hand for scale.. is its annual growth rate ... whats it look like.. 8 inches .. maybe a bit more on the leader a few pics above ...

I'm telling you that if you will get rid of your 'Dent', I personaly will come over to the U.S. to cut it down and take the scions back home for grafting ;0)
