I went out to browse the garden early this morning & found myself, as usual, pulling a few weeds when I backed up and snapped off the tip of the scape on 'Scaramouche'.

Argh!

Now I know there are those who would tell me you should do that anyway on 1st scapes of a newly planted dl but I was so looking forward to seeing that bloom.

Harumph!

i feel for ya. Yesterday I was moving a lilly because It was to short to be that far back in the garden. What possessed me to move it when it was blooming I have no clue. I accidently snapped off the bloom and buds. UGH!! I could have cried. I was yelling at myself all day.LOL

I too have done both of the above.. but my worst was knocking off a seed pod with the edge of my camera as I was going in for a close-up of another daylily.. I was just SICK! I couldn't get another pod to form on that plant for the rest of the season.. I suspected that the plant was mad at me for the incident and pouted!

Mr. Clint, I'm not trying to chase you off, just try to make you understand your ability to crank out food comparatively easy for 365 days a year is a direct function of where you live, not from colossal cultural practices. Yes there are some tried and true methods of agriculture that have been around for ages that continue to be practiced and help in the struggle - crop rotation, trashy cultivation, trap crops, etc. But keep in mind none of the "natural" methods was rarely ever the sole means for protecting crops under Midwest conditions. Along with all that timeless advice, it was not uncommon for lead arsenate, Paris green, and other nasty things to be used to protect food crops. All I'm saying is here growing food is more of a battle and aged agricultural principles, although they may help, won't take care of the problem. Heck, last summer an orchard near here lost 100% of its apple crop due to fungus (black rot I believe). Seriously, I'm on their email list (as part of the Kansas Fruit Growers) and they sent an email indicating they canceled all sales. It is more of a battle to grow food here. Farmers around here have experienced it. Dare I mention it, but even the "evil" chemical companies market their crop protectants accordingly (Warrior, Pounce, Ambush, Assail, Stinger, etc.) I'm sure you'll argue the chemical companies are just doing that to keep the war mentality going, but I disagree. They are appealing to experiences that are already there (i.e. losing a whole apple crop to fungus) That growing food here is more challenging doesn't automatically make it unenjoyable. Perhaps an analogy would be rock climbing. It can be very difficult along the way, but can also be rewarding if successful.

Iris borers are big problem for us in the Midwest and East Coast. I have definitely found much more than three of them doing my dividing this year. Interestingly enough, I noticed that the plants that were affected by the Iris borer were growing in a spot that well-drained soil. I do have many Iris growing in poor, clay-type soil and they were not affected. I also noticed that the Irises I had growing with mulch cover were also not affected by the dreaded Iris borer. Some interesting methods on how to destroy Iris borers...I'll have to try the hot water one, never thought about that. Although my personal favorite is to simply take my scissors and go SNIP...nothing like watching that yellow goo come out! Carlos

Okay, you all have probably saved my marriage. If DH had come home to me holding a paintbrush anywhere *near* those cabinets, he would have flipped. Since I hadn't planned on doing a glaze, I was quite the taskmaster when he was painting them. I made him wipe off and re-do a few areas because there were imperfections in the paint. I kept telling him that they had to be darn near perfect, b/c there would be no glaze to hide any of the rough spots. A few times, I swear I saw a flash in his eyes that told me he was about ready to turn that sprayer on ME. He came through, and the finish is like glass. We've even had professional painters come in and comment on what a good job he did. Imagine all of his hard work hidden under a golden yellow glaze..... I'm likely going to do yellow cabs, but in the pool bathroom. Right now they're 70's brown, and they'd be stunning painted a soft yellow with a glaze. It'll scratch that itch for me, and I can be true to my original vision for the kitchen. Thank you ALL so much for your perspective and words of wisdom. I actually learned alot about myself (and the ridiculous need to re-do things) by reading your responses. I feel I may be just a bit more balanced now! LOL!! Love-my-lil, Your post made me crack up. You're a hoot! And my roots are getting a bit long....time for a trip to the salon! Laura, DH used a Wagner paint sprayer (bought JUST for this project....another reason he'd kill me if I sullied up his paint job!). The cabinets had already been painted, but they were discolored and smoke-stained. We cleaned them with TSP, primed with Sherwin Williams Prep Rite Bonding Primer (made specifically for adhering paint to glossy surfaces..it's spendy, but it's amazing stuff!), then sprayed 2 coats of Sherwin Williams latex paint. We didn't want the mess/smell of oil. Patricia, I bought the valance (of all places) at Home Depot. It was only $17.50. I was shocked when I pulled it out of the package and it was *exactly* what I'd had in mind to make. I couldn't have even bought the fabric for $17.50! Of course, adding my frou-frou fringe upped the total cost, but I'm a fringe kind of girl. :)

I have had so many I lost track, but I have a positive history. I had to follow a cancer protocol. At first I had another after 6 months, then once a year for a few years, then three years, and now 5 years. My history started at age 38. I most definitely would not be here alive today if I had not insisted on having one done at 38. I made a believer of my gastroenterologist. When you have a nagging feeling that something is wrong stand your ground! I have had several types of preps but I have absolutely refused to do the golytly gallon drink. I also stand up for the type of prep I will do and with as much experience as I have I know what works best for me. I did like the pills and I knew to take them as prescribed with the proper amount of water. Unfortunately because of some people having negative reactions not many doctors use them now. My latest one a little over a year ago was one of the newer split preps it was nasty tasting but I always chill it and use ice, a straw and hold my nose as I suck down as much as possible. Then immediately rinse my mouth with water. It really does work. I also always start taking a stool softener, NOT laxative!, 2 nights prior to the prep. It makes the movement much easier and less painful. Not being able to eat is difficult. I also buy my favorite soup from a restaurant and strain it for just liquid. I stock up on Popsicles. Depending on the Iv drug cocktail I might or might not remember anything. The latest version I didn't need to get Phenergan in the mix but I used to become extremely nauseous upon waking up and would vomit, with risk of aspiration. Demerol does that to me. So they knew to add some Phenergan to the Iv. It's not a fun process but I am alive because I did it! That's a very powerful statement. I will stand on a soapbox any day to help get that message across. I was 38 and the doctor said I probably would not have seen 40. I had no definitive symptoms, I had no blood, I had stools shaped like a U, a deep groove down the center. That was caused by the extremely large growth in my lower colon. My doctor decided he would go along with me just to make me feel better. He was shocked. Please get your colonscopy done.

I believe in the Daylily World this is known as "Posterior Attrition" It happens normally during the early morning hours. Some say this is cause by a lack of caffiene in the early AM. Other's also say it happens in the afternoon and is cause by excessive exhaustion....in this form it is called "Improper Daylily Posture" or "oh Crap I did it Again....geeezzzzz......Have a Great day!

I feel for you. I know every year I do something stupid (well, more then once a year) I get soooo mad at myself; so I know that feeling and it's not good.

Well.........

**I** have snapped off scapes this season, which really bummed me out. Thankfully, they were almost in bloom, so I took them inside, and I got some blooms. :o)

Then, **THE DOG** broke off the first scape/only scape on Surf this year with her tail! Waggus Maximus.

Yesterday **THE BF** stepped on and demolished my newly planted Forstyth Frostbound that it took me 6 months to find. So, hope that will come back.

Arrghh! My friend who was helping me knocked off a scape with 4 seed pods. I've managed to knock off a few myself. She called me this morning and told me her horses got in her yard and pulled up Wild Cherry Round Up. They evidently didn't like the taste of it so they left it alone. They moved on over to her pickup truck and ate 12 watermelons. Ah, such is life in the country!

The giggles have me feeling better already, in spite of my "posterior attrition" ...though I can't quite figure out why my rear doesn't look any smaller since developing that condition ;)

I certainly feel your pain. I was taking pics in the garden one morning. I squatted down to get a closer shot of a flower, and heard that sickening crunch sound. S__t!!!! Stood up and turned to discover I'd completely mangled the most awesome bloom I've had this year on ETHEL BUCCOLA. Garden photography can be dangerous to your DL's.

So true! This morning I knocked off the first bloom for this year on Webster's Pink Wonder...heard that crack as I turned to get out while...you guessed it...trying to take a picture of a seedling. Of course, it's not just me....there's the dog with the ever-wagging tail...fortunately, he's not too bad unless he gets concerned about something and seeks me out...and the cat who follows me around and rubs (crack!) against any plant I pause on....

Oh and don't forget the hose getting caught, despite hose guards,....the meter reader who can't use a path...and (to look forward to) the gutter repair that will go on July 1st (right smack at peak bloom)....

LOL...sitting here laughing with you folks...been there, done that a number of times! My DH calls me Miss Neatnick cause I love things to be neat and tidy, in my garden as well as my home so, I constantly pull any weeds that appear, I deadhead my dl's religiously early each morning, and I cut off all scapes that have no more buds, pods or prolifs, and sometimes in spite of being so so careful, I accidentally knock off a bud of snip one off when deadheading. I could just kick myself when that happens too!

I just knocked off a couple of buds from a daylily today. The worst part about it was that I was in the process of teaching my daughter how to handle them carefully so as not to break off the buds or snap the scapes. Talk about losing credibility!

Sometimes this is just the best kind of thing to read about in a forum! I was feeling a little down and isolated out here in the country until I read these posts! There are so many people experiencing similar pain! I have had similar instances. I was pruning a beautiful ornamental tree in the middle of my lilies. The tree was planted last year, and sadly only two branches made it. I put on my glasses, found the dead limbs, had hardware problems with the cutters, looked back up - and cut one of the two remaining live limbs! My husband came to "help" by pulling some "weeds," and I turned around to see him with a handful of lilies! Oh, my!

Tess, I've done that kind of thing too- pruning out the live branches....oh, and the pets, the kids, ...no hubby to worry about here...but the meter man...the delivery guy who scaled my fence in the snow instead of using a walkway....

OH, LOL this is just getting better.

Now Ellie, if you won't tell then we'll just have to make up stories about what you have done in YOUR garden....hmmm, I'm not as imaginative as some on this forum but here is my story...

How's this one?

Ellie was taking her morning garden walk when she spotted a particularly gorgeous bloom. She stepped in to take a closer look when Wham! out of no where a giant green grasshopper landed on her nose. She was so startled that she jumped and fell landing her rear right on her prized $150 Lambertson intro!

Now come on Rick, you've got a great sense of humor. Let us see what kind of "Ellie Story" you can come up with....:D

Once upon a time
There was this Suthern Bell
You and I know her rather well....
She had this addiction that made her very sick.....
It revolves around Daylilies and is rather slick.....
As the sun rose over good ole Alabammie.....
We found dear Ellie, yup, flat on her Fannie.....
She had been taking pic's of some dazzling daylilies....
When this huge grasshopper landed on her nose, giving her the willies......
About that time, our dear Berrytea4me happened to drop by.....
She saw dear Ellie....and stated oh my my.....
What happened dear Ellie do tell.....
Is that a crushed fragrant Daylily that I smell.....
Ellie lay there in disbelief.......
Wondering why Berrytea4me was giving her such grief......
Now what Ellie did to poor Berrytea4me......
Well that is sumpin we all want to see......
I did hear it had sumpin to do with a Bee?????hehehe

Tune in tomorrow at 9......we may hear what really happened this time.....Ã´Â¿Ã´

All right Rick.
How can I follow that? I have been known to have the Derriere of Death when it comes to daylilies. This year I was moving a new aquisition in a pot. When I put it down....snap there went the scape.

JUST this evening I said to my DH - I must plant this day lily because it's about to bloom tomorrow (Joan Senior). As I'm carefully planting it I somehow snapped off the one that was going to bloom tomorrow! I was so upset! I just comforted myself by looking at the other scapes and realizing I'll see many blooms soon.

It is so frustrating though!

WONDERFUL!!! You all just make my day so light hearted and joyous. Down right funny and Rick that is a fantastic poem. Poor Ellie, please, be sure to stay away from my Chaste Tree (Vitex). I bet it had thousands of bumble bees on it yesterday. I tried to get a photo, but the bees move so darn fast that my poor camera just couldn't do it justice. You could actually hear the BUZZZZZZZ before I got within ten feet of the tree. Well, maybe I will post a photo of the tree. It's been so pretty. Blessings, Mona

Mona, I love the Vitex tree. I cut one down not long ago but not before I started another. it's a slow go but it's gonna make it. I have hundreds of bumblebees on my St. John's Wort. It's about 6 ft tall and has been beautiful but most of the blooms are gone now.

Jan, I think I'll plant my big fat B...t in the middle of Rick's daylilies. I am on my way to find him now...Ellie

Mona, I love your vitex....I have 2 of them and totally understand what you're saying about the bees....same goes for my wisteria when in bloom only maybe a little worse with it. You don't dare go near it on the lawn tractor for fear of being attacked!! :)
