Castor Beans?

I'm growing my own castor beans this year (Thanks, Sharon) and they are just starting to sprout. I planted 6 of them into 4" pots (deep style) and I have 3 totally up and 3 just breaking through the surface. The 3 that are totally up sprang up to about 4" high in a matter of hours. Have they "stretched"? I can still salvage the other 3, if so. But, when the first 3 popped up, I had the tops of the pots about 2" from the lights. I moved them to a different shelf with about 8" of clearance.

My questions:

a) as above - Have they stretched or is this normal?

b) Do they need to be repotted and should they be put deeper in the pot? The seeds were planted about 1" deep to begin with.

c) Can I leave them on my vine shelf with the 8" clearance?

I just didn't expect to see these pop up so high so quickly. You could almost sit and watch them grow. Unfortunately, life gets in the way.

Yes, they will get really big, so you will want to grow one seedling per 4-5" square. Yes, its normal that the stem will have a stretch, the 8" clearance under your lights will be good for a couple of weeks but thats about it, make more room on your dining room table. LOL

I don't start mine till around April 19th and I don't transplant outdoors till June 1st.

Thanks, Sharon. Looks like the banquet table is going to end up in the bay window again. I guess I'd better get used to sleeping on the sofa. lol.

The info I've been given in past is that it is good to START the castor bean plants inside - usually on a tall shelf so kids/pets can't get at them and then, when the plants are about a foot tall (and the temp. outside is warm) that's the time to put them out. I love the deep burgundy leaved ones and in my yard, they have grown huge, with leaves maybe 18 inches across. A good companion plant is the Mexican sun flower with its lovely deep orange-yellow blooms. Look great together!

Will castor bean get rid of voles? If so I need some...

I have voles and possibly moles. I've seen the voles (mouse-like creatures) but I have loads of tunnels in the yard. So maybe that is a mole. Farm stores and big box home and garden stores have granules which are labeled non toxic and won't harm pets. You have to get the granules into the tunnels and water it in. My understanding is you water and do more granules going towards the end of your property lines, driving them away. To be honest, I did not want to fool with the watering part. There was also an earthworm-looking bait, it looked like a fake rubber earthworm, supposedly they eat it and it kills them. I didnt' want to use this becoz I have a small dog, and altho I don't think she would get into the tunnel and eat the earthworm bait, one never knows. And then poison bait not eaten will get into the environment. The next gizmos were solar-powered and battery-powered sonic emitters. The thing made a beep every 30 seconds, which I didn't like. So far I have decided not to intervene, becoz, while I have lots of tunnels, I don't see any plant damage, all my bulbs are up etc. So we are peacefully co-exisiting at the moment. Laurie

You would have to ingest the seed for it to be toxic - I have never heard or read of any toxicity reported with handling the seed - an animal or a human would have to ingest the seed (and a few seeds) to get enough toxic ricin. There have been reports of children dying after eating 2-4 seeds.

I just bought a package of these yesterday at Wal-Mart...It's probably not too late for me to start them, but do you have any pictures of where you placed them? Just to give me an idea of scale...
And...is it difficult to remove the old rootball in the fall? If it is anything like Sunflowers then the root ball would be huge.

If you can find some of Sharon's pictures, she had some in containers - probably with petunias. :) Gale in Thunder Bay just gave me one. I've never grown it before. I've seen them, though, about three or so feet high.

Here's mine from last year, they hit about 8 (when standing in that area outside, the bottom of the window is 5'). I had to saw off them off like tree trunks, and the root balls are still there - I haven't attempted digging them out yet - I'm hoping they'll rot a bit first before I try it.

OMG....that thing is massive...
OK so now I am a bit afraid...I have no idea where I could put something that big!

Hunnerbun, you could always just put them in pots too. They'll only grow so big before it's root bound and then they won't get any bigger. I've had them in a whiskey barrel before and they only got about 30" tall.

Holy Castor Bean Pudge!

Hunner, there are shorter cultivars that don't grow as huge as the 'Zanzibariensis' plain green kind. But heck you'll have to try the tall variety just to freak out your neighbors!
