How long for pine roots to die so I can plant another tree?

I bought my house three years ago, and one of the things I loved about my lot were the mature trees that provided a lot of shade. Much to my dismay, I am now having to cut down 2 large White Pine trees in the middle of my yard (probably at least 60-75 feet tall) because the trees are starting to lean and lose large branches. The roots extend out probably at least 40 feet that I can see. I have tried digging in the area around the trees before for stepping stones, etc., and it is nearly impossible to dig without hitting roots. So my question is, how long will it take for the roots to die and rot so that I can plant some more shade trees? Thanks!
