Some of my favorites: clematis, roses, jasmine, honeysuckle, hyacith bean... this year I'm trying passion flower vine. I've always wanted to try corkscrew vine. I've had morning glories before where you want a quick filler...they self seed like crazy! For a nice annual vine, I like mandavilla.

Rainbow, I am in your zone and have had great luck with climbing hydrangea (huge and beautiful at full size and can live in shade, but takes a year or more to really get going), morning glories (annual), clematis (the other people on the thread will be able to help you with different varieties), sweet pea, and of course climbing roses.

I'm partial to Five-leaf Akebia for fast-growing arbor cover. The fruit smells sweet like grapes. Evergreen here in z7. It's fairly tolerant of most sun/shade combinations.

Being in NC, I love the jasmines. We have several varieties. Love the fragrance. Evergreen here in z7. These work well as backdrops for perennial plants. I use these in areas that get some sun/partial shade.

Clematis is a favorite. There are so many to choose, that's a matter of personal preference for color, bloom size, bloom time, etc. I use these in full sun.

We have a crossvine on an obelisk, but it's so vigorous, we have to whack it constantly to keep it from taking over the house. It would be more suited to a larger support. The hummingbirds love it. This gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

There are quite a few annual vines that you can use to scamper over the perennial vines to extend the color season. Some of the other folks have more experience, but I've used moonvine, black-eyed susan vine and another red flower -- name escapes me. All of my annual vines were given to me by friends, so I didn't get the classified names of those.

I'm sure there are folks here who can offer advice on climbing roses. I have Lady Banksia, but it's really not a climber per se and it's huge in short order.

I have a few vines in my garden, Akebia Quinata is a favorite, this one comes with wine, white or rose colored flowers. It also comes with plain green or variegated foliage, gold or silver. Honeysuckle for me is a must, I have several different varieties, my favorite, 'Serotina', the late dutch honeysuckle. I also have a well behaved Wisteria, many Clematis and a few Roses, Ampelopsis Brevipendunculata (blueberry climber), this guy is a woody climber and has turquoise blue berries in the fall. Passion vine and Jasmine are two more I have just planted this year. I also have a Schizophragma Hydrangeoides(climbing japanese hydrangea), this one I am now beginning to think I'll be dead and gone before I ever see a bloom, it is sooooo slow growing for me. Honeysuckles, Akebia, Roses and Clematis montanas add fragrance to the garden, which is an absolute must have for me.

I have New Dawn climbing roses which are easy and rebloomers. I have autumn clematis which I love. Also cardinal flower which is an annual and planted again this year, by summers end it will have covered the trellis's and be full of red flowers. I have a yellow trumpet vine which just bloomed. an out of control wisteria, my biggest mistake ever- 15 years old- its everywhere and only bloomed once. don't recommend it.
Annette- hang in there- the climbing hydrangea likes to wait and climb before it decides to bloom- took mine about 5 years before it bloomed. worth the wait.
hyancinth beans are an awesome, fast growing vine- gorgeous flowers beautifully colored bean pods. I was overgrown because the fence was very short and I couldnt bear to cut any of the vine- beautiful. Sue

Sweet peas and hops are right up there on my favourites list; I also like climbing roses, potato vine, honeysuckles, and some morning glories.

One clematis ... thinking about adding another this fall.

Always Mexican Flame, moonflower, passion, and cypress vine.

Added a couple star jasmine this spring.

Today I picked up a couple packs of seed ... Heavenly Blue morning glory and black-eyed Susan vine.

honey_girl: I'm z5 too, and have never heard of climbing hydrangea -- I need to check that out!

My favorite would be honeysuckle vine too. I've got Lonicera heckrotti 'Pink Lemonade' and absolutely love it! so do the hummingbirds. :)

I definitely need to get a couple different kinds of honeysuckle, I just have to contain them so they dont take over! :-D

Wines are so beautiful and so very cottage-y! :-)

My favorite flowering vines are Carolina Jessamine, Honeysuckle, Hyacinth Bean and Japanese Morning Glory. Madam Galen Trumpet Vine is another favorite, but just to admire from a far. (I made a huge mistake planting that in a small area and thinking I could contain it.)

Non - flowering favorite would have to be Virginia Creeper. It grows wild around here, so I had better learn to love it. lol

rainbowgirl: the honeysuckle I have is L. heckrotti... I've never tried any other, but I can assure you that L. heckrotti does NOT take over anything (at least in z5). It's a lightweight loose vine that doesn't mind being cut back if it goes where you don't want it.

I just went to find the first pic I could... this was taken the other day. (yes, I have it growing up two plant hook things. lol! I haven't found a trellis that I like, and these work just fine. LOL!)

I sheered this one back a little in late spring. Some springs I sheer it back to look like a little shrub when it breaks dormancy... Hope it's ok to post a photo here!!! (someone please let me know nicely if I shouldn't)

Passion flower vine - there are many varieties now but if you want the medicinal variety, use the old species, Passiflora incarnata. I have a Purple variety now but I still think that incarnata is the best. Everyone should have a passion vine in their cottage garden.

Coral honeysuckle is a good part shade vine that is not invasive. Much like the L. heckrotti above.

Lavender trumpet vine has done well by me - Clytostoma callistegioides. The third year, it was just covered in beautiful light lavender trumpet flowers that had dark purple striped throat . See link below.

For annuals, my favorite is Butterfly Pea Vine - Clitoria ternatea. The vines I have had are much bluer than the pic at this link.

all honeysuckles aren't the same invasive pest as the Japanese honeysuckle. There are some wonderful natives. Lonicera sempervirens is native, not invasive and very beneficial, offering nectar to hummingbirds and berries to other birds.

Lonicera heckrottii 'Gold Flame' aka Goldflame honeysuckle is a cross between a native Lonicera sempervirens and a non-native with the misleading name of Lonicera americana. It's not a purebred native but it's not invasive and is fragrant. Speaking about vines, can you please tell me if star jasmine can be propagate from cutting? I'm hoping to start a few cuttings and taking them back to Vietnam. We don't have it there. Thank you.

Star Jasmine, we're talking Trachelospermum jasminoides? yes you can grow them from cuttings. The cuttings are usually taken from a piece where you can bend the new growth without it snapping (semi-hardwood), use No.2 rooting powder. Hope this helps.

My fav annual vine is hyacinth bean. I tend to let cypress vine grow if it shows up because the hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to it. I even made one a little trellis the other day.

With the exception of Clematis, most vines are thuggish where I garden. I am constantly battling catbrier (smilax), Virginia creeper, trumpet vine and a host of lesser vines including poison ivy.

Marilyn, I do have to admit that Virginia Creeper is a fine red in the fall.

I love morning glories. If you want some contrast, how about some of the climbing beans? Some of those are quite attractive and you'd get a yummy treat as well!
