favorite vines?

So what vines do we all have and what are their plusses and drawbacks?

Mine are

silver lace--because it grows so fast and the bloom period is so long. Don't like having to prune it back, but will do it for that long, lovely bloom period!

Carolina Jessamine--because it's evergreen and the yellow spring flowers are so spicy and nice. Needs lots of water and likes a more acid soil.,

wisteria--for it's gorgeous blooms and because it decorates the front of my carport so well in summer. Don't like having to prune it in January, but the blooms and greenery are worth it.

Nelly Moser clematis--because it has a long bloom period

New Dawn rose--mine has done really well and blooms all summer like crazy. No black spot!

purple honeysuckle--great in allseasons and well behaved

It's not a perrennial, but I am really loving the cypress vine I have planted on my cheap archway for the hummingbirds. It took a long time to bloom, but the leaves are so delicate and pretty and the bright perfect red flowers are worth waiting for. I like purple hyacinth bean, too - also an annual.

Wow - so many to choose from.

Porcelain vine
Variegated ivy 'Goldilocks'
Morning glories (any and all)
Clematis 'Dr. Ruppel', 'Polish SPirit', Jackmanii superba, Sweet Autumn CLematis, 'H. G. Young', 'Proteus', tangutica
Passiflora 'Incense'

I have a new one I'm really looking forward to, and it seems very vigorous, which is jasminum x stephanense (clusters of pink trumpet flowers), and is supposed to be beloved by hummingbirds and butterflies.

My neighbor tried a new one called aster carolinius and I think I'm going to have to have that next year!

Back after a long absence. The plants (Bougainvillea in center, flanked by Tangerine Beauty crossvines) don't look so good. They haven't been fertilized since we planted them in No. 2012, but were well fertilized then. They were well watered last year, but we cut back this year. Party Music - Thanks so much for the info on Honeysuckle, it caused me to do a little research which I thought I would post here >>>>>> all honeysuckles aren't the same invasive pest as the Japanese honeysuckle. There are some wonderful natives. Lonicera sempervirens is native, not invasive and very beneficial, offering nectar to hummingbirds and berries to other birds. Lonicera sempervirens 'Blanche Sandman' blooms on and off from mid April to hard frost in a zone 7 garden. I second Saskatoon berry, the fruit is to die for! marric, I have Regent and Smokey varieties and the latter bears more fruit. Other favorite shrubs: weigela 'Carnaval', cotinus coggyra Royal Purple, Hakuro Nishiki variegated sage (all full sun). Favorite perennials: Astilbes, Heucheras, Cimicifuga, Hakonechloa and Hostas for shade, Helictotrichon (Blue Oat Grass I think), Miscanthus grass, Ostfreidland Sage, Campanula, Ornamental Garlic, Catananche and Sedum spectabile for sun, just to name a few! :) FAvorite vines: Clematis, what else! A new favorite tree is Macckia amurensis which is good choice here with our Canadian winters!

Patty, I've heard from people in various areas of the country the same: it didn't spread for them. WHY ME! I must have gotten a pot of vines that was seeded by the devil himself. And our soil is so bad: caliche in some parts, gumbo clay in others. Our lot is 1/2 an acre, and there is one 2x3 area way back in the corner that is fertile. Some St Augustine took off there, so we have this lovely patch of grass below a retaining wall, that no one can see. The other grass is gasping Bermuda (except in my flower beds, where it thrives like it's on steroids). :D My late husband was from Iowa, and I remember just marveling in awe at the soil there. I'd have a yard that would rival anything if I got regular rain, not a 110 degree sun beating down on shriveling plants, and beautiful black soil! Unlike me, they don't need an auger to dig a hole for anything. :D

My favorite has to be clematis of any kind. Never met one I didn't like. I'm fond of most all vines. Its hard sometimes to find enough fences and things to grow them on. Love cypress vines also, but at my last home they were so rampant that they covered and threatened to kill lots of more desirable plants. Reseeds everywhere! But it sure did look pretty in the fall blooming with the purple salvia leucantha!

We like all of our vines because we have a lot of chain link fence to cover. They include silver lace, sweet autumn clematis, akebia, bittersweet, 4 honeysuckles, Carolina snail seed. EP

Clematis is my favorite.
I also like mandevilla, morning glory & cypress vine.

I planted Hyacinth bean & liked it but it didn't grow very well for me for some reason. It bloomed but never got very tall. I'm going to try it again next year in a different location.

Debbie - what exposure did you grow it in? My friend across the street grows it, and it keeps reseeding every year. It grows from the ground up into the Bradford pear trees - about 30'. (See, Bradford pears ARE good for something!).

Enchanted place - is Carolina snail seed hardy? I think I saw it in Steve Dobbs' book?? Is it decorative; does it attract birds/hummingbirds/butterflies or anything? How fast does it grow? Just curious - always looking for a new vine to try.

I have the Hyacinth Bean planted in full sun. It's barely 2 foot tall now & was planted in April.

I think it may be in a spot that is too wet for it?. I planted it in a dry spot but that was before my neighbor planted a crepe myrtle on his side of the fence. He waters it daily so the run off kept the hyacinth bean damp enough that I have never watered it.

I wish it would grow up my Bradford pear & choke it. LOL

OKC1..I have a question about a Silver Lace vine...Do you prune it back and if you do how much do you take off...It is 2 years old and growing very nicely on our back fence. It has bloomed both years in late summer (August). I have never pruned it back and don't want to do something to it that will kill it...
