I know most people don't like it..

But I put in ajuga at work and it put on such a nice spring show! Everyone loved it.Its in several places nothing else is in.I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get other colors.I see black for sale, but the other colors that came up on search were in another country.Does it flower in anything but blue/purple? thanks

Check out Bluestone Perennials. This is the last day of their half-off sale and they list 4 varieties of ajuga. BTW, I love it too.

I've seen it in pink and white.

I like ajuga too. I don't use it in my new gardens, but at my other house I had a terrible dry, shady spot that was isolated from the rest of the gardens, where it was just beautiful.

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

hampton, they just don't all know you from the decorating board. Give it time! I looked over in discussions and saw your sink question - - is that the one you're talking about? I would guess people just didn't know the answer off the top of their heads. But a good website to check out sinks of all types is homeclick.com, although given what I have heard on these boards, I wouldn't risk actually ordering from them.

I'm with pllog. I may not have bad allergy attacks most of the time, but cats love me and make a beeline for me when I go into a house. As a real estate agent, I try to be very careful to not insult the homeowner, but if they touch any exposed skin of mine, I have an instant rash. I make a joke about not being able to touch the cat while talking to the cat and most h.o.s get the hint and pick them up and often move them elsewhere. If a house has multiple cats or is not very clean, I will sniffle all day and feel lousy. Most of the time, I am not there long enough to have a really bad reaction. I only had my throat start to close up twice in my life. Running outside and gulping air fixed it. I can care about a friend and not want allergy problems or, quite frankly, to care about their cat. You can love whomever you want, but sometimes it is not proper to foist them on others. I adore our sons but it is not always proper to mix them with company. The same is true of pets. A quick hello is plenty. If I had worse allergies, then that would even be too much. Having a non allergy aversion is also acceptable. It is nothing personal about your pet, but some people have a fear of dogs and that does not make them bad people. I was bit by a chihuahua years ago and am still leery around them despite not having much fear of larger more imposing dogs. I have some allergies with certain breeds of dogs, but will still choose to pet them and suffer a small reaction. The key is it is my choice as to which pet I will touch or not. My allergy to dogs is less than to cats, but I also like dogs more. Not liking cats is a personal choice and does not preclude me being a good friend or guest. If that means someone thinks I am not worthy because I don't like their "Fluffy", then it is their loss. The funny part is I am usually the most attractive human in the room to cats. I can walk in with several cat lovers and the cats want nothing to do with them, but love me. They must love "hard to get" people.

I also deal with dry conditions and it's a great groundcover in my sandy soil. I have Bronze Beauty, Burgundy Glow, Variegata, Black Scallop and Mahogany as well as the species. I know that, eventually, I'll be pulling it out, but I'm happy with that.

Recently on Gardener's Diary, an old rerun had Erica Glasener in Pamela Harper's garden in southeastern Virginia. It was spring time and she had a large sweep of it in bloom along a long, wide path. It was fabulous!

A neighbor had the most beautiful cobalt blue shade of ajuga growing under her mailbox in clay soil that is so dry and hard, I don't know how she got them planted. It looked fabulous. I hope to do the same next spring.

I planted several of the Chocolate chip and the plants never bloomed. They haven't spread either. This is supposed to be the least invasive variety and that was what I wanted but it never bloomed. The spikes are still there but no flowers. Just my luck...maybe next year ??

I have Bronze Beauty under a rose in a raised bed....tends to get dry if not watered daily and it's doing pretty well there. Very pretty groundcover.

I just put some in last fall for the first time around my Anabelle Hydrangea bushes. Is it hard to control if it is in a bed without other flowers?

Nope, not hard to control at all. Their root systems aren't very deep and they don't spread that rapidly.

I have a bright green variety and it hasn't bloomed yet but if I remember correctly the flowers should be blue. Mine has spread to 1x2 ft. since planted in the fall of 2005. I see new spots of it popping through the mulch in several place a few inches from the original plant. I don't mind. I'll just rip it out if it gets in the way of planting other things.

Lori, is the tall purple flower in your picture an allium? Very pretty. Your garden is so colorful this year. I can't get over it since most of it was just planted last year. So pretty! You need to post more pictures in the gallery for everyone to see ;)

MeMo, thanks! The tall purple flowers are society garlic. They've gotten so big now that we need to divide them this fall. I don't think I can grow allium out here, they'd probably fry. I'll post some pics on the gallery side and I appreciate your vote of confidence! : )
