Still waiting for blooms

I was looking at last year's notes & realized that by the 21st of May last year, Little Audrey was in bloom, with Selma Rose blooming on the 23rd. A couple others started about a week later & it really started big in early June. This year Little Audrey is no where near blooming, Selma Rose doesn't even have a scape. In Selma's defense, I did move it last fall & am realizing it got shaded by some tall daffs. On the other hand, Jamaican Music has looked like it is going to bloom for the last 2 or 3 days, still nothing. Surely tomorrow. Of course, I just started keeping close records last year, & everything was early. Apparently things are back on schedule this year. Can you tell I'm ready for blooms! My iris are almost gone now, a storm came through & pretty well washed out most of the remaining blooms. I do have some lovely lilies in bloom, I'll get some pictures of those tomorrow.

I'm seeing the same thing, seems the season has been reset for normal. Last year everything was weeks early. I do have the crazy early scapes on a few daylilies, but that is it. Not even stella has scapes yet.

While it was exciting at first last year to get early scapes, in the long run it was the pits because bloom season was over so darn fast. I am happy to go back to our regularly scheduled bloom times. This spring has been the opposite of last year. Hot spring last year, cold spring this year.

I have also found that getting Tall Bearded Iris really helped in that there is that entire iris bloom season way before the daylilies.

Nancy, do take pictures of your lilies in bloom. Mine don't have buds yet.

LTGF, I had only one brug out of 5 I put out that bloomed consistently over the summer, and it seems to like heat. Once the cooling began I got buds on 4 plants, one has begun to flower inside (it's just 2' tall in a pot), one spent the night outside last night and I hope it didn't freeze, one is in the garage going in at night and out daytime, another in my bedroom window taking up way too much room in my bedroom. It's been frustrating but now that I've had a first freeze here I need these guys to bloom so I can cut them back and put them in the basement! Each year is different with them, so keep your spirits up and look forward to what they'll do next year. Meanwhile I have other houseplants blooming their hearts out to make up for the brugs!

Thnks everyone for the encouraging words. I know I'll have bloom eventually--probably a few new ones still on Florida time will bloom soon. Nice thing about this forum is that it extends everyones bloom time. We can look at other people's gardens before ours bloom and they can look at ours when theirs have finished. Val

Ginny, the main water mine got came from the hose...we had a very drought-ridden summer. Time after time it rained all around us and we were dry. I did water, though. Jean, I fertilized in the springtime before they bloomed, mostly with organic type enrichments like alfalfa and fish emulsion. I gave them some fish emulsion in August, I think it was...they were at the end of blooms then, I thought, and I wanted to give a little back to the soil more than the plants...they have had no actual fertilizer since early spring. Just a fluke of nature. Debra, I have never had re-blooms in October before...I am enjoying it. SC Behavior Patterns had one spent bloom on it when I noticed the one in the picture blooming. Nancy, I have been spoiled by all the rebloom...it will probably never happen again, but I have enjoyed it. Post some pictures. We are all desperate for bloom pics. kay

Well, I used to be considered zone 6, but they changed my zone to 7. I would assume it would be fairly similar to 6b. Even my lates are fading, will be gone in just a day or so. I would think you would have large buds by now. I have had small buds form but never develop on a new plant. Actually, this year I had one I thought for sure would bloom. Had tiny buds form early in the season, nice lush plant that is at least 3 years old now. Not one bud developed into a flower though. Still, even if we were the same zone, that doesn't mean we would have blooms at the same time. Could just be your neighbors have early peonies & yours is a late.

Nancy.It really is hard to be patient waiting for a daylily to bloom.I know I was checking for scapes every day for weeks before I finally seen a scape, then had to check it each day a couple times a day to see if the scape was growing.

Jean, you sound just like me :) You are right Rita, I will be happy in the long run for the season to last longer. Cindy, you reminded me that I actually did have a bloom on Stella. Like Dumortieri, I put poor Stella down so much, I don't seem to count her as a "real" daylily. I'm going to record this years blooms so I won't be disappointed next year.
