Skeptical neighbors

When I first told my neighbors, just behind me, I was putting in a BF garden they voiced concearns that my "cats" would eat their plants. I assured them, my "cats" would only eat "select" plants which were specific for them! I have spent a lot of time educating their daughter (10-ish)about the different butterflies, moths, and skippers which inhabit my yard. Now my yard, as many of you know, is a little "wild" shall I say? My neighbor called me to the back fence a couple of days ago and I thought "oh boy, now she is going to ask me when I am going to trim up my plants which are growing up and cascading over to her side of our shared fence". On the contrary! She complimented me on attracting so many beautiful birds and butterflies and other wildlife to our yards! I came in with moist eyes. Even my indifferent hubby and son had to admit it was "pretty cool". I just had to share this with my gardenweb friends as I know you of all people can relate and appreciate a changed mind!

Kat - I am so happy for you and I can feel your pride. Well deserved.
I also have neighbors who laughed at all my garden work initially. I constantly heard "what are you planting NOW?". It's all good-natured, but they truly didn't get it. Now they all realize the "wild looking" plants in my yard are the ones who attract the butterflys that visit in their yards. Even when I think my garden looks terrible and weedy, they compliment me and how pretty it is. They still kid me about it but now they really do want to know what I'm planting!

Kat ~ That is such a great story! What all plants do you have growing? I'm trying to plant more hummingbird and butterfly attracters.

Thank you for answering, David. I'm guessing that I made a poor choice of grass, right? It's not that we don't want to mow, but my understanding that if NOT mowed, this grass would get about 6" high and flop over in tufts. I was hoping to have a few "islands" in the lawn with groves of amelanchiors and sumac with the unmowed grass in the middle rather than mulching the "island" with bark. I want our yard to look neat, but lower maintenance than I've had in the past. The back half of the property will be seeded this fall with native grasses and forbs, and I'm trying for bird-friendly natives in beds next to the house. The picture of clover is beautiful. At this point, would that be the best bet to overseed in the fall? Or should I overseed with more of the no-mow mix, or some other kind of grass seed altogether? I do feel like the hydroseeding was done poorly, so I don't trust the advice I'm getting from the lawn guys. I have read your faq over multiple times and appreciate your having written it. Since seeding now seems to not be a good thing to do, we have just spread 100# of corn gluten, hoping to minimize weed seeds sprouting until we can reseed. Is that a reasonable plan? Is so, should we continue spreading it every six weeks? I'm also planning on spreading compost over the whole lawn when I can get to it. Thanks for your help--

I agree 100% with your "learn how to feed the soil, water deeply and infrequently, mow high, and most of your lawn problems calling for other chemicals will go away. "100%", no." I respect that. But there limits to that, very limited. If you have POA and mow high you are adding to the issue. If you do not have a inground sprinkler sys and have a large area waterind water deeply and infrequently, is great but I hope you have lots of time to know when to move, lots of $$ for hoses etc. If you have Cinquefoil, chichweed, Dandelion, dollarweed, foxtail or other small issues (up in Yankee world) from neighbors etc you will need a chemical herb. IF you do not use them [chems], you will never get rid of them and will spread. I have tried what you have stated for years (back in the ealy 90's) for reasons outside this thread. I have gotten way better results using herbs then anything..Less time, proper mowing, proper watering, less money then going the organic route and a time saver on these issues. The key for me is cheaper also. I like use 7oz of Dim to get proper control for crabgrass and will get 95% of it. Then throw on Drive 75 for up to 2 or 3 tiller and you are done for months. That is nice and easy and cost $10 in product and 30 mintues time. :) You way works in a perfect world with no outside issues. I live in Tx and did zero to my lawn and look not to bad. But I feel, in FF world we have a little more issues with items noted above.

Harry that is so neat! This is what Birds of the Carolinas says about them: "A rare winter resident from late October to mid-March, the Long-Eared Owl frequents dense growths of cedars and other evergreen trees. It probably occurs throughout the Carolinas and may be considerably more numerous than the few published records indicate. Because the Long-Eared Owl is mostly silent on winter grounds, it is seldom recorded." The Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds has a map which shows PA as part of their permanent range, with the winter range extending to southern Ga. There is also a note stating that the birds breed very locally within the indicated range. Pauline those are great pictures! What kind of a camera do you have? We just purchased a Pentax K10D and I told DH that I will be happy when I can take pictures like those. We have Barred Owls on our place too. They are beautiful birds. They've scared the bejeebus out of me a couple of times; occasionally they will start their "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all" with a blood-curdling scream.

FlowerLady ~ I was so tickled you gave me a heads up on the hummingbirds! I was going to reply to your post today. My DH saw our first hummer of the year yesterday! This is our third year seeing them in our garden. I have so many bird attractors now, lobelia cardinalis, firespike, firebush, dwarf powderpuff, salvia (all diff. colors) coral honeysuckle, cape honeysuckle, turks cap, dwarf poinciana, porterweed, just to name a few. Those are just the one's I can think of off the top of my head for the hummers. I have several berry producers also. Many natives and some annuals thrown in here and there. E-mail me if you want to plan on stopping over and I would love to share some cuttings. mom of cfr @aol.com (no spaces tho)

Kat, your garden is wonderful! Because of you and Katkin, I have adjusted my opinion of Butterflies, from unwanted pests, to "my friends love these critters, give them a break!"

I still don't like it when the Orange Dogs eat my citrus, but I now own quite a few "butterfly" plants and plan to add more. Your enthusiasm for Natives, and nectar plants is catching!

I talk about your gardens often, describing the "living color" that is everywhere on your property.

You have taught me a lot.

Lisa, What a nice thing to say! I am so happy you are getting more caterpillar friendly in your garden. I love the "flying flowers" in my yard. It is so neat that we have influenced each other in our plant choices! I can't wait for peaches! And if I could keep those #@%* squirrels off the figs I would like those too! LOL! When you are ready for more bf plants let me know!
Call me if you need me to relocate some of your "orange dogs" I have a wild lime just waiting for them.

Kat ~ I just found this message this morning 4Oct., and will email you from home as I'm at work right now. This morning I was looking out the window over the sink while washing dishes, into the secret garden. The flying flower activity at the firebush was going strong, sulphurs, zebras, gulfs, and maybe a couple of others. I also have the purple porterweed that the butterflys love.

Haven't seen hummers again, but keep looking for them. Glad to hear you've had them three years in a row.

It is starting to be really wonderful out, breezy, not as humid and the temps are milder. Sure am looking forward to some chilly weather. Last year right after Wilma blew over we went outside and had to come back in and find flannel shirts as the temp had dropped to 58 degrees. That was a blessing considering we didn't have power for 13 days and had all the clean up work to do.
