Look What I Found!

Out looking for pine cones today. And while that was a bust I did find a variegated juniper in the woods. Do you think it's a mutation or did that longhorn take a whiz on it. Last picture is just a nice pinyon pine.

Lets see, Juniperus 'Bos Ureata'? You'll probably have to take a cutting to find out if its real or not. Are junipers one of those plants that roots correspond to top growth? If they do correspond, a root may have crawled in a rock crevice and is starving there, but I don't think so. There's too many junipers in rocky spots without any yellow on them. Looks like you have some propagating ahead of you.

Nice pinyon!

That juniper is worth observing; I don't think the longhorn's micturations will have done it, but it could possibly be a patch of nutrient deficient soil. To see if it is a genuine genetic mutation, take some cuttings and see if they maintain the colour in different conditions.

mrs.micki, I personally use a med to fine grade sandpaper. All you really need to do is scuff the surface. I use Kilz primer on almost anything I paint as it helps to hold the paint a lot better and keeps any imperfections from bleeding through, such as the knots on your desk. I also use a roller to paint as I like the texture it leaves. My hubby prefers to use a brush as he likes a more smooth finish. So it depends on what look you're after... and who is painting! Paint is very forgiving. If you don't like it, you can re-paint it. I have an old dresser that has been painted every color of the rainbow. The latest color is white. Great find Noto! It's a pity that these variegated crassulas tend to have these brown marked leaves, mine are too, and everyone else that posts about them seems to mention it. Why is it a feature of them, anyone know? Nice colour on the Hummels also. Gill

Lovely. I've seen them in Cornwall and on the Isle of Wight. I have a pressed specimen dated from the 70s in my old faithful Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe. Nowadays I wouldn't pick one, of course.

Australia has a very strict quarantine on incoming plants, that's why. what, you did not know? and of course you'll have to pay for shipping ...a-ha-ha...- makes no sense whatsoever! the cutting won't survive the long process in any case. you prolly can get something similar from Thailand faster and with phyto certificate.

I didn't take cuttings, but I did log the coordinates in my GPS and I'm adding them to my Google earth now.

I dont think there is anything in the literature about rooting j. ashei. But generally juniperus is best in winter I think.

The golden shoots look healthy and It's probably fair to say that all of this soil is equally nutrient deficient! And that's what's neat about it. J. ashei is an indestructible weed in this part of the country. It's just not much to look at. A more interesting form might have some horticultural value.

I knew you would appreciate the pinyon Resin. The last time I posted photos I said I thought the tree I was looking at was more than 8 meters (whats in perry's book). But I think this photo settles it. For scale my truck is parked maybe 20 feet away from the tree and several feet higher. I'm bad at guessing height and distances, but that tree is probably around 40 feet tall.

Yes, fall through winter according to the link on the post about rooting cuttings.

Juniper - December is when Bob Fincham roots his he once told me. (one month of 'cold' whether you live in Jamaica or on the north pole, is required for best rooting). Cuttings in the morning. Best after a rainfall and/or taken on a cloudy overcast day very early in the morning (all cuttings).
Tent them for humidity or better, a mist table. A simple method is a tented chamber inside a greenhouse with hand misting.

Watch for fungus - keep at bay a fungicide/algaecide. Remove immediately that bad ones.

Mix will vary among conifers. Junipers - mostly sand - more on the dry side.

(from memory with a little logic - Dirr should be read first however)

I was thinking of going back in the winter and taking the whole plant and containerizing it - which I wasn't set up to do today becuase I was supposed to be getting pine cones and I had already "found" some stuff. Then I could try some cuttings and maybe a few grafts.

I probably found 30 or more nice big mature pines and all had immature cones and or spent cones from previous years. The good news is next year will be good and I found some other stuff to take home;) I also saw a pretty big rattlesnake Dax....It was clearly headed towards the midwest.....

Don't some plants lose their variegation when propagated from cuttings? I know Sanseveria do but I wonder if it happens with other plants. And does variegation carry over in the seeds? I.E. is it genetic?
