brown turkey tastes like cardboard
Comments (4)Some will disagree but not all Brown Turkey's are the same. They generally look alike and taste alike, but some are better than others in the flavor category. Comments (26)Just moved house last September (Hickory, NC) and am fortunate to have a large fig tree (8' tall X 6' across) in the back yard that is now absolutely covered with nearly golf ball sized figs. Looking forward to tasting the first ripe fig of summer! Last September I was so busy getting moved in and situated that I hardly had time to enjoy the fall crop although the ones I did eat were quite tasty. Based on the descriptions I have seen I believe this fig is a Celeste variety of some sort. Skin is a light violet to brown when perfectly ripe with a deep amber to red flesh. If picked too early they are a bit watery and bland in flavor and are very sweet if allowed to ripen fully. Getting a perfectly ripe one was difficult last fall due to large hornets that seem to delight in eating them from the inside out leaving a hollow sack of skin hanging on the tree. (Not sure what to do about those...) Trips to Lowes, Home Depot, and a few local nurseries turned up nothing but BTs thus far......See MoreBrown Turkey Fig leaves brown and falling off
Comments (9)If you were to dig a hole 2 feet deep next to the tree, do you think it would ever fill with water when it rained; or, if you did fill it with water, how long would it take it to drain? Have you done anything in terms of fertilizing? If yes, what did you do? any other additives or spraying of either non-selective or broad leaf herbicides so that drift could have been a problem? Comments (5)This is an important question. Earlier fig authorities, such as Ray Givan and Fred Born (The New Fig Booklet, 2000)state that the brown turkey has a red cast in the eye from a very early stage of fig development. My early brown turkey figs certainly show this flash of color, while other varieties, such as Celeste and Magnolia, do not. I have used this as a specific marker for the Brown Turkey, but I have not had exposure to dozens of varieties, such as some of you have had. Loslunasfarms photos clearly show the red color of the eye in the one or two shots that show an intact, uncut eye, head on. I am not sure whether his shots are of the eastern type of BT, or the California type. For those of you who have dozens of varieties, please take a look at your young figs, and tell us: Is the "red eye" sign only seen in BT figs, or are there other figs that show this same sign? The color is not a bright showy red, it is a fairly subtle color, but definitely a flash of red. If it is only seen in BT, it is a very valuable sign! Thanks....See Morecmdrzog
