Cheaper than a motel?

So, the house next door to me was sold in January, met the husband and wife and seemed like nice people. Found it slightly odd that until that point the wife had NOT seen the house they bought, but whatever. She's all gung ho to move in, he wants to completely remodel first.

Anyway a flurry of activity starts with what appears like people measuring and a tree service coming in and completely leveling everything. I think this is gonna be great, this house is FINALLY going to be cleaned up.

The former owner had hired the BillyJoeBob Tree Company, whom I just know was insured, to clean(I think) the yard after Wilma. Well after he got done destroying the remaining little bit of privacy I had in the way of a fence and managing to rip off a good portion of the roof eave with his truck - he was gone.

Now the yard is completely bare and any signs of work, remodeling, moving in have totally ceast to exist. Mind you I had lived with a privacy fence, for like 10 years now, so there is no hedge or anything to obstruct my view of the whole back of the house.

So anyway Mr. Hummer(that's what he drives) starts showing up for a couple of hours darn near everyday, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Everytime he shows up another car pulls in and joins him, always a woman and by no means the same woman. After awhile it has obviously been narrowed down to Ms. Chrysler300 as the preferred person to "meet" with; and no Ms. Chrysler300 is not Mr. Hummer's wife.

This has gone on almost everyday for months now, but it stopped for the past couple of weeks. I thought for sure Mr. Hummer had received the Lorena Bobbitt treatment courtesy of his wife, but I was wrong. He and Ms. Chrysler300 are back and trying to make up for lost time. Geez, local Viagra orders must have tripled since Mr. Hummer moved to town.

I keep telling my husband if I actually ever do see the wife again, that I'd love to have some innocent little comment to make and he keeps yelling "leave it alone"!!!!!!! lol

Take photos! Lots of photos of the cars, with the date imprinted on them. Leave them in the mailbox once Ms. Hummer is there. I'm not big on interfering, but she deserves to know.

Keep us posted; this is better than TV!

Oooooooh! Use it, use it! Write out a house renovations completion schedule, complete with privacy fence, landscaping accomplished, etc., and let the man know that if he does not keep to the schedule you will look forward to inviting his wife and him to dinner to discuss the construction of a fence.

Many of these cars are in or around Toronto so I would think they have a big market. Its interesting too that certain areas of the US have cheaper prices on cars. One is Rochester, Ny not far from us. Miami is another good city to buy used cars. PA tends to have cheaper cars then other states. When you have to travel its just a PITA as you would have to make a trip just to look at the car, then another to buy it. I've heard that some people will take a day off work and really plan it so that if they like the car they can do everything in one day. I spoke to some dealers in PA who said they sell to out of staters all the time and will help you sort it all out. I'm not sure what is worse buying a house or a car.

It's interesting to ponder that banks only consider the purchase price of the house, not what it would actually cost to live there after factoring in utilities and maintenance. - They often do. The backend debt to income on a new home is often 42% an old home is 34%. bry, your examples are all market specific. - But the constant "building costs more than buying" isn't, so let's agree that we shouldn't give that advice unless we have built in their market. The original "remodel vs. build" example doesn't work in an area where there is no available "land" and the real estate market is very supply constrained. - Yes, because most people who live in an area where they can't afford to buy land come to the gardenweb forums to get advice on building. Sorry about the snark - In all fairness, the supply constraint is only half the story. Demand matters and can actually have the opposite effect. In our area the supply is very blue collar, 1,200 - 1,900 square foot homes but over the past 20 years our area has had a massive white collar transition and the demand is for 3,500 to 4,000 square foot homes. Even though we are very land constrained the market for suitable executive homes is incredibly competitive thus driving up the price of existing well above the cost to build.

I suspect that this question really can't be answered in any meaningful way without very specific information. In general, buying an existing home is cheaper than building a home, however, renovating is much more expensive than building. So the question becomes at what point are the costs of remodeling greater than the savings from buying existing, and the answer is simply not that concrete. For starters, some homes lend themselves to additions much better than other homes. Siding vs. brick, crawlspace vs. slab, etc. Additionally, there is the location problem. While it might be cheaper to build a house on an available lot, the total cost of ownership for a more suitably placed home might be lower. Parks, schools, groceries, etc. within walking distance will often make a house more suitable and lower commuter costs sufficiently to make up for the marginal costs of remodeling. Not to mention general quality of life issues when the location of a home enhances the way you live. Finally, depending on location, lot development can be a pretty important consideration. I have personally paused my home design as I labor over an extraordinary piece of property. It is absolutely everything I want, however, it is going to cost me seven figures just to develop the property into something I can build a house on, so those costs can be significant if no satisfactory lots are available. ---------------- As others have said, assuming there is a satisfactory larger home available, it will always be cheaper to find a way to acquire that rather than remodeling, however, if nothing works, you might not have many options. At some point a tear down starts making a lot of sense. I suspect your friends are actually naive about the costs of remodeling and are overvaluing the infrastructure available. However, we should allow that, that might not be the case.

Yeah you’re getting a lot of flack for a straightforward question. Agree. The OP's question is quite reasonable. No one else is going to watch your dollars as carefully as you yourself -- not even the pros with whom you work. In general, I've rarely been disappointed by "doing my homework" and learning as much as possible about the topic at hand. A standard window size produced by a particular manufacturer will be cheaper than a custom size by that same manufacturer. It makes sense to design with standard sizes if possible. Sensible -- and something several people have said. I think the OP is asking though, What sizes are considered "standard"? Non functional windows like picture windows are the cheapest. Right, but you don't want non-functional in many places: up high in a vaulted ceiling room, where you can't reach the windows ... a wide/short up above a shower ... maybe in a room like a closet, where you'd never actually open the window, a pier glass next to a front door. That's all I can think of. But, yeah, using stationary windows in certain spots can be a good choice -- partially because they're cheaper, but also because fewer moving pieces means less to go wrong. IMO windows are kind of the eyes of your home and that is not where you try to low ball pricing. Agree except for the "IMO". I think most people agree that windows are a real make-or-break item, and they're really, really not a place to skimp. That's what you'd call False Economy, and I think we can call that a fact instead of an opinion.

I've seen the wife maybe 3 times since January and she has always been with the husband, never alone. I just can't figure out what he's telling her for why they aren't moving or remodeling? Shouldn't she be anxious by now? But, I can't figure out who has a husband that just buys a house without bothering to tell the wife!

By the way honey, I bought a new Hibiscus today and it has a new house attached!!! lol

Maybe I could take lots of pictures and tell the husband, he better replace the fence if he doesn't want me to show anyone else the photos!

How about putting a nice shiny castration tool (bovine, or maybe small animal(?) emasculators) on his doormat?

I found one this week when neatening up the cupboards at the vet clinic. Looks very useful. Especially for the lowlife you have next door.

My opinion of men, or women who cheat on their spouses is unprintable..

My neighbor had a "Mr. Hummer" that made frequent visits to her when she first moved in. Everyone new "Mr. Hummer" was a well known local property appraiser who was married. But my neighbor didn't seem to mind, and she got a lot of home improvements bought for her by "Mr. Hummer".

I wonder if these "Mr. Hummers" are the same guy? :)

I say, beware of men who think they need to drive around in expensive oversized vehicles.

I'd say that men driving oversized vehicles are trying to overcome some shortcomings but, obviously Ms. Chrysler300 doesn't seem to mind!!!!!!!!

This post is too funny! It's better than the reruns on tv. We had a neighbor that kept us all entertained by this week's boyfriend. She ended up back with the exhusband, and sure enough, got her name on his new house. We told the people that bought her house that they are boring compared to her, but they're so nice. Keep us posted.

We actually ended up with someone buying the house next to us and they ran an escort service out of the house. You wouldn't believe how they trashed the house and the filthy pictures that were scattered all over the place when they left. To make it even worse the woman had tricked an old man into marrying her ( he was in a nursing home) and she took him for all his money. They (the woman, her boyfriend) lived in the house for a couple of years but often would have the electricity cut off for non payment.
What was really scary when the day that my young son saw a car come down the street and throw a rifle out into the yard and speed off. The house was finally foreclosed on and luckily we never saw them again.
